Cards/Reds road trip to close out 1st half

0-3 so far with the losses in the bottom of the ninth.

At least we haven't lost any ground to Milwaukee as they continue to drop.

With four good teams in the division I think we beat up on each other enough to where only one team may come out of the central.

It also appears that the Reds and Chapman may be up to their old tactics, too...chucking the ball at people for no apparent reason (at least, none that I'm aware of).  It will be interesting this weekend, but if they start that nonsense, they simply have to plug somebody, hard, where they will be down for a while.  Of course, huge risk on the Bucs' part, but this garbage has to stop.

Yeah, yeah...I know I'm anticipating something that may not happen, but Chapman could not have been more obvious last night, and we all know how the Reds enjoy throwing at the Pirates.

Re: Cards/Reds road trip to close out 1st half

well 1 win and 3 losses in St. Louis and we still gained ground on the Brewers.  That ship is sinking fast.

We need at least 2 of 3 in cincy for this trip to end the first half on a positive note.  Best we can be is 1.5 out of first depending on how cards/brewers play out this weekend.  Getting to 50 wins would be great.

Molina out will hurt the cards long term not just in defense but also in managing their young pitchers during the game.  big loss.

Yeah, it would be great for the Pirates to win 2 of 3 against the Reds who will be without Votto and Phillips.  I still have no confidence we can beat Cueto, though.  If the Cards do well against the Brewers, it will really tighten up the pennant race.

Am I the only one who feels like it is a "must win 2 of 3"?  It was nice to have that run against bad teams, but the Bucs need to do more than hold their own in individual games against good teams--more series wins.

It's not a "must win" anything this weekend. Yes, the Bucs need to play better in the division in the second half but "must win" suggests the season is over is the Bucs don't win the series this weekend. Pretty sure they won't be eliminated July 13th if they lose the series.

While not a "must win" it's disheartening to see the Bucs give away 2 unearned runs in the 7th then Watson allows 5 straight hits in the 8th costing them 3 more runs.

A 5-1 lead at the 7th inning stretch turns into a 5-6 deficit going to the 9th. ohlord

Frustrating loss but it is baseball. Who would have thought Watson would get 2 quick outs and then give up 5 straight hits. Not me.

Need to start winning these division games though.

People were ripping Hurdle for not having Melancon in the game, but those hits came so quick when would you have got Melancon up?

Re: Cards/Reds road trip to close out 1st half

I'm just ripping the thought that now Melancon hasn't pitched in so long that if the Pirates are winning or losing 8-1 tonight Hurdle will pitch Melancon "to get some work".  I don't understand why he is refusing to use the teams best reliever.  But, then again, I'm also of the mindset of using relievers for 4 and 5 out saves if necessary, so I'd have Watson getting loose in every 7th inning and Melancon in every 8th.  JMO.

I suppose you're correct.  The frustrating part is that we generally expected the Bucs to play well within the entire division last year, and win.  Any individual series is not going to turn the tide, but I think you read a bit much into the comment.  I never intimated they would be eliminated, but at some point, if they want to move up in the standings, they simply must start beating the teams in front of them, that's all.

For the second night in a row in Cincinnati the Bucs blow a 4 run lead. banghead

Painful to watch the last week, but kind of typical for the season. Doing enough to lose.

Very strange, indeed.  Oh well...perhaps pressing reset over the break will help.  I'm still wondering if Petey will ever have one of those monster stretches we have seen before.

Cutch happens!!!!  He is absolutely the best player in the NL and has to be the favorite for MVP once again.

Talk about putting a team on your back. Wow what a performance by Cutch when the team needed it most.

If they blew another game like yesterday, that would have been a big blow to this team.

Huge performance by Cutch.

I wasnt blaming Hurdle for that loss. Not at all. Watson has been great and no one could see an implosion like thst after getting 2 quick outs,.

While I agree with what should happen, I think McCuthcen only wins the MVP if the Pirates make the playoffs.  I think Kershaw, Puig, Lucroy, Wainright, and Freeman all have worthy resume's and will probably win the MVP if the Pirates fall short of the playoffs.
