Pirates get Morneau

More to come, but you heard it here first!

Looks like Morneau for Pressley. Done deal.

I'm not displeased.  Alex was a tradeable piece for this part of the season.  The only thing is that it's being reported "plus PTBNL or cash."  I'd bet cash, but...

Re: Pirates get Morneau

This makes me hate the Byrd trade that much more.

Jones and Tabata could of played the outfield till Marte got back and then platooned when he was healthy.

I have a feeling Jones is due for a huge month so hopefully he plays.

This was a very smart addition though and the type the Pirates should be making.  Much like the Ludwick and Lee deals of a few years ago.  If you're going to get a rental player at least give up nothing you'll ever end up regretting.

Whenever its a PTBNL or cash it's almost always cash.  It does however mean that it won't be a player of any consequence.

With the reports of how Pressly has been in the locker room, this is a great deal. We have seen Alex's best and worst, and we can easily live without it. Great move.

This is a fantastic deal! The PBC will not miss Presley and it's possible Morneau heats up due to the pennant race. Plus, he has experience for these stretch drives. Gotta pat Huntington on the back for this one.

I am curious to hear about Presley and reports about him not being a good presence in the dugout. What have you got on that?

Re: Pirates get Morneau

I heard him interviewed on FAN after a game up here in PGH and he made in very clear he wasnt happy with his situation. Thought he deserved more. While he was not blatantly a bad apple, it was clear to me that he was difficult to deal with in regards to his attitude and him thinking much better of himself than the oranization.

While I disagree with your assessment of Herrera and the overall value of the previous deal, I think this is a very, very solid post.

This deal certainly makes the last one look a little more suspect.

Here we go again, nervous Nellie is having another cow over the Byrd trade. rolleyes

By the way, mister smartest guy on the board, "could of" makes no sense no matter how consistently you use it. Everyone on the board knows Jones and Tabata could've filled in for Marte. Most also know their production has been sporadic, at best, and nowhere close to what Byrd has done this season.

Yes, when Black is winning the Cy Young and Herrera is the next Miguel Cabrera we may regret that trade, but until that happens I'll take a wait and see approach.

Re: Pirates get Morneau

It's also possible the outcome of the Byrd trade netted us Morneau on the cheap because we held all the cards. If the Twins wanted to save some $$$ and get a return for him before the FA market, they had to deal him now.

It still turns out to be a win-win for both teams, but I think the first trade played a big role in the PBC getting Morneau for very little.

I think you can now give NH two thumbs up for how he handled the trade deadline.

Re: Pirates get Morneau

Not to mention that the trades, taken together, really strengthen the bench for the stretch run.

It isn't enough to have starters to cover 8 spots.

RE: Pirates get Morneau

well the great Katoy has looked into his crystal ball again and not only is Herrera gonna be a allstar starting in 2018 Jones was about to bat .300 with 12 homeruns and go on fire in September....Would it be because of his combine .241 average and 2 HR's that he has combined for the last 3 years in September? maybe its because he had a .312 average back in April but since then he has had 1 month where he batted over .250. Why exactly is he going to get hot and be on fire?

Victor Black is a bullpen arm. He is replaceable. We need a better OF bat THIS year and we gave up a kid who may be good to great in a few years. Maybe the Pirates Make the playoffs the next 2-3 years and maybe Free agents will want to come here and maybe they can get a good IF via a trade or FA that wont make you miss Herrera. However maybe if they choked again this year and went on a little slide and lost in 1st playoff game they dont look attractive to those said FA's.

You have to win to attract good players. Players that arent hoping for a bounceback year (we had many of those not work). Nobody wanted to come to the pirates, improving NOW will help that.

RE: Pirates get Morneau

WIth Morneau and Byrd the lineup is more balanced. Good balance is what won for the Cadinals(Boston pronounciation, lol...and the Twinkies won the same way, good pitching and balanced lineups, very good for Pittsburgh.

Marte
Walker
McCutchen
Morneau
Byrd
Alvarez
Martin
Barmes,,,tough lineup

Re: Pirates get Morneau

Something I'm not up on is setting the roster for the playoffs. Is it limited to 25 like the regular season? If so, The new additions will mean a couple guys who have been here for most of the season won't get a spot. Harrison and Mercer or Barmes are the only backup infielders and I don't know if you could afford to cut either of those guys.  I guess Jones becomes your OF depth along with Tabata with Sanchez and Morneau at 1st. So, I'd say your 5 man bench is Buck, Sanchez, Barmes, Harrison, Jones and Tabata. That's six, so who goes? Or do they go with 1 less relief pitcher?
