Mercer back to Indy when Walker healthy..

Mercer back to Indy when Walker healthy..

Strait from the mouth of Hurdle. Looks like no matter what Mercer does he is not going to play over Barmes and he is not going to be a bench player.

I was afraid of this. The kid has some talent, looking forward to watching him next year

Sending Mercer down makes sense because he will get much more playing time which will help him improve even more. Could be starting SS next year. The bad part of it is they still have McDonald as a bench infielder. This is not good, I don't care Hurdle says you don't give away pieces of your team but this guy can't hit or field. I think Harrison would be a lot better. Makes you wonder what goes on behind closed doors biggrin

Its the GM's job to decide who is on the 25 man roster.  Hurdle is just being a good soldier.  The Pirates aren't going to eat up Mercer's service time while he is sitting on the bench.  Barmes has the glove and a hot bat right now.  Mercer isn't going to take Walker's job right now.  The Pirates know Mercer is ready.  It makes more sense to play McDonald one day a week as opposed to playing Mercer one day a week.

Would an injury to Alvarez bring back Mercer?  not that I want in injury, i'm just wondering if he can play 3rd.

Walker can play 3B.  That would be the best move - with Mercer playing 2B.  Other 3B options are weak - Inge, Harrison, Sanchez...

Not surprised on bit. He should play everyday right now he can not.

Re: Mercer back to Indy when Walker healthy..

If Mercer can play third, which I see no reason he couldn't then I disagree with this move.
He should be the first infielder off the bench. Keeping him up, they could easily get him 4 to 5 games a week by allowing him to play multiple positions.

He can play 1 game a week at 2nd, play a game a week at 3rd when a lefty pitches, and then play 2 games a week at SS for Barmes.

I guess you could argue that is not fair to Mercer to have him playing multiple positions, but I really don't buy that. I guarantee he would rather do that than go back to AAA. The kid has shown he deserves to stay up and sending him down is a bad decision in my opinion especially when the player staying up is McDonald who I still can't figure out why they traded for. Just dumb getting him even removing Mercer from the equation.

I think the most important thing is that the Pirates figure out if Mercer is a major league SS or a 2B.  Whether this question is answered in Indy or Pittsburgh doesn't matter.  If he is deemed a 2B then the Pirates should probably look at moving Mercer or Walker.  The Pirates need to know if Mercer is their 2014 SS or if they need to go outside the organization and get someone else.

Its clear Hurdle prefers defense vs. offense at SS.

I actually prefer defense at SS over offense as well unless the offense is just off the charts ridiculous.

But at this point, I don't think Barmes is so much better at defense than the other options that he automatically stays in the lineup. Maybe he is that much better defensively and I am wrong, but I just don't see it. Admittedly, I am forming my opinion simply on what I watch as I do watch most of the games and I am not using any stats whatsoever.

That is a very good point. When we signed Barmes his history was slightly below gold glove but father team as got up to him.

I am of the thought that Mercer is more of 2nd basemen then a ss in the majors and they will not move the hometown kid so i can see Mercer getting moved for a ss outside of the organization.
