Roster Move

Roster Move

The Pirates have optioned right-hander Phil Irwin back to Triple-A Indianapolis and have recalled outfielder Alex Presley (#7).

<P>

In seven games with Indianapolis this season, Presley hit .357 (10-for-28) with two doubles, a home run, two RBI and a .400 on-base percentage.  He reached base safely in all seven games, hitting safely in six, and went 2-for-4 in his last game on Saturday.

Re: Roster Move

So now we have a 3rd horse in the Tabata/Snider race to claim the RF job.  Awesome.

Maybe they should just let them all play 3 innings every single game....eek1

Cool beans.  Strengthens the bench.

But if he takes a single AB away from Snider, heads here will explode.  cool

Where is Inge in his rehab? I thought he was close so Presley being up will be short term.

Inge is 4 for 32 in AAA so far.  Neil may be reconsidering....

Re: Roster Move

Is this because Harrison needs to stay down their for ten days or something like that? Harrison is better off the bench than Presley.

Can Presley play 3rd base?biggrin  I'd say it's 4 RF on the team since Jones occasionally gets in there.  Time to either trade Presley or Tabata.  This is too much of a log jam into the entire system.  I'd value Presley higher.

Re: Roster Move

Though often wrong, I think Presley is here only for a short time, and only to pinch hit.

They want Inge up, but he's just too bad right now.

I think it was Sunday, but they had the AAA manager on and he said that Inge is starting to really hit. He said he started extremely slow but the last few games there has been a noticeable difference in the jump of the ball off his bat.

In saying that, like you said he is 4 for 32 so who knows.

This makes the most sense. Plus they dont burn an option on Mercer. I do want to see Snider get at bats. He is hitting well and the worst thing to do will be sit him for a few games. I want to see him vs leftys too.

Re: Roster Move

The Pirates kept Inge at the expense of someone else on the 40 man which I thought was a mistake. I am not a fan of Inge being on the team. I do like Presley. I think he brings a lot to the table offensively and provides a LH bat off the bench, plus he can play all 3 OF positions. I agree with giving Snider a legit shot, but it's possible Presley might be better. With the exception of 2012, Alex has always been a high average hitter with speed and some power. And yeah, Harrison has to stay down for 10 days.

In the four game weekend series just concluded, he was 2 for 9.

But the two hits were a double and a solo HR, which is a good sign.

I'd love to see Presley play 3B.

I would greatly prefer Presley for the fourth OF role, though I still maintain that he could definitely start for a number of teams around MLB.  I wouldn't cry if he were our starting RF, to be honest with you.  I am not a fan of Snider and Tabata has worn out his welcome with me.  I agree that either Tabata or Presley or perhaps even Snider needs to be traded.  I think if the Pirates are anywhere near contention at the All Star break, that there will be a large deal that will include one or more "surplus" pitchers and outfielders.  I would imagine that a shortstop who can hit will be coming back to Pittsburgh in exchange, though if K-dro and "Whiff" Martin keep it up, I think either or both of them could be benched in favor of a stretch run upgrade.

RE: Roster Move

Presley sucked last season. An attempt at objectivity would be pleasant. Or just call Snider fat. Whatever.

I think Presley is better than what he showed, but Snider looks like a player to me and he has a superior track record. He might be a better defender than Presley too. Tabata vs. Presley, I don't know. I probably like Presley better, but they are both noodle-armed lead-off types that may hit for average. Presley has a little more pop at the moment, but he's 3 years older. I would rather roll with Snider.

Re: Roster Move

In his pre-game press conference tonight, Hurdle said that Presley was called up rather than an infielder because of the matchups against the Cards and Braves -- all righties except for Maholm (who he described as "not a big righty-lefty guy"). He said everyone just decided that THIS WEEK having an extra left-handed bat was more important than a backup infielder (especially one with a hot bat).

He didn't mention starting Presley in right. To the contrary, he said that it is possible Presley could spell Marte in left one night, given the number of games the team is playing in a row and the fact that Marte hasn't had a night off so far this year.

Finally, he said that if there is an unexpected need for a third baseman this week, McDonald or Russell Martin can fill in. I had forgotten that Martin played a few games at third for the Dodgers.

Maybe a trade is coming. The Blue Jays are looking to pick up and OF after one of theirs went down with an injury. I may be possible Tabata will be traded soon.

RE: Roster Move

What Jays outfielder got hurt? Jose Bautista has a sore back but the team is using him at third base this year as Lawrie is going to play second base. Jose Reyes got hurt and the team has four other outfielders already on the roster and two young guys in Gose and Sierra who played significant time last year in the majors in AAA.

No reason to think trade. Just an extra lefty bat for a week of righties.
