Mets and Jason Bay Agree To Part Ways

Might be the end of the road for Jay Bay.

although you never suggested it, I'm sure some might want him back, so let me be the first to say.....hell no! Loved him while he was a Pirate but don't want him back under any terms. He's too beaten up to be worth any substantial contract.

I will be rooting for him wherever he goes, though.

Not signing Bay is likley the best move in the Huntington regime - not that he had a choice.

I bet Bay takes the money and retires.  I'm sure right now he's hoping someone will give him an extra 5-10 million, but I think all he will get is some spring training invites.  Rather than doing that, he'll likely just stay home with his family.

He was the perfect Pirate, ultra-productive in his club control years, and then worthless after them.

I think Bay knows he done, otherwise the Mets could have gotten him to waive the $3 million for declining the 2014 option.  I'd guess the Mets opened with that - "We'll give you your release if you forgo the '14 option.  You should be able to get at leat $3 million somewhere else".  Bay's agent probably knew the Mets shopped Bay everywhere willing to pick up 80-90% of his contract and there were no takers, so he advised Bay to keep the $3 million.  This means Bay's value is much less than $3 million and probably no more than the major league minimum if he can make it back.

Probably true, but I think he could still be a productive fourth outfielder for somebody if he can get past the concussions.  Up to him if he still wants to pay the price to get back in game shape, assuming his body has anything left.

Bay has mentioned he'd really like to play for the Red Sox again - no such comments about the Pirates.

Of course he wants to play for the Red Sox. He can hit the ball 250 feet and get a hit as a pull hitter off the monster. Boston is one of the parks that overvalues players beyond belief. If he puts up a good year some team will be stupid enough to give him a 3 year 20 million dollar deal after that.

Re: Mets and Jason Bay Agree To Part Ways

I agree that Fenway rewards hitting short fly balls to left.  Yankee stadium rewards hitting short fly balls to right.  But the hitter who can actually hit those fly balls on a regular basis, especially when the pitchers are trying hard not to let them, has considerable value to the Red Sox or the Yankees.

In his big 2009 season at Fenway, Bay actually hit more HR on the road (21) than he did at home (15).  His OPS was higher at home (.937 vs. .907), but that was due in large part to the fact that he walked more at home than away (55 vs. 41).

Bottom line is that before his injuries in 2010, Bay was a very good major league hitter.

That said, I don't advocate the Pirates getting him.  I think he's probable done.  Some team will take a flyer on him, but it will have to be a team with money to burn, which isn't the Pirates.
