For me, the Skyview - Ferris game is the most difficult to predict. Both teams have that look of teams that were humbled early on and have now hit their stride. I have seen many teams go on to win state championships under these circumstances. They include:
Gonzaga Prep '82 - Can't remember who they lost to early on (they lost 2 times I think), but once they got rolling no one could beat them. That includes nationally ranked South Kitsap in the state championship.
Bellevue '83 - Lost twice (including 1 game in Hawaii), but rolled throught the playoffs & state championship outscoring their opponents 93-27.
Puyallup '87 - Lost two games, including to 2A Washington (a team the mighty Tahoma Bears thrashed 35-0
). Won state championship.
Cascade '91 - Lost to 2A O'Dea early in the year (a team that couldn't make it out of the first round of the playoffs that year), but went on to win it all.
I haven't even mentioned the '07 Lewis and Clark team, the 2 Kentwood teams, and 4 Curtis teams that went on to win it all ( the '95 Curtis team is one of the best teams I've ever seen) and stuggled at times during the regualr season.
The thing with Ferris is that pretty much everyone (including myself) thought last year was going to be for rebuilding. Many people (including myself) changed that tune when they won the 7 on 7 state championship over Skyline about a year and a half ago. My point is that the ''08 was so junior heavy, it seemed to be a forgone conclusion that Ferris was going to dominate in '09 (something they obviously didn't do). Now they seem to be hitting their stride. I use the word, "seem," because I was surprised with how much the struggled with Eisenhower last week. My logic behind that is the same for being surprised by Lindbergh's performance last week (like Renton, it's been a long time since I've seen a competitive team come out of Yakima. I anticipated a non competitive game as a result).
I'm really excited to watch Skyview. Without having seen them, I imagine a roster full of a bunch of upper echelon role players that all play hard from whistle to whistle. Part of me is reluctant to get too excited about watching them because all they did was trounce a bunch of SPSL teams en route to arriving at the semi's (something I don't imagine any of the 3 other semifinalists having trouble doing). I'll be at the game and let all of you know what I see.
I think Bothell - Skyline will be yet another war (the 3rd one in 2 years). On a neutral field, I think Skyline wins.
I'm picking Union to beat Bellevue by 2 td's. They return pretty much everyone from last year's 2nd place team.
I gotta go with Lakes, even though they seem vulnerable (what team isn't). Lakes is so talented, that it seems almost impossible to make a big play against them. To be successful, you have to put together 8-10 successful offensive plays. We'll see if Liberty can do that. While I'm not too impressed with Lakes' offense, all they need to do is have a few big plays to put some points on the board. The game is Lakes' to lose, but I think Liberty doesn't go quietly. Lakes by 24, with 14 of those points coming at the end of the game when the Patriots run out of gas.
All these games are going to be great!
