Malaysia Flight Crash - Reports of plane being shot down

Malaysia Flight Crash - Reports of plane being shot down

I posted this in the other thread, but it's probably big enough to start another discussion.  Especially since I have a harrowing feeling this is going to implicate Ukraine/Russian tensions.

Can you imagine if pro-Russian separatists shot that plane down? I hope it's not true.

Very, very, bad. Both sides are already blaming the other, and will no doubt use it for propaganda.

Eagles/Indiana/Mets/Villanova: it's a long story

Certainly seems likely that it was shot down. I dont understand why either side would be so stupid to do that.

Unfortunately, it was 100% shot down.  It was the pro-Russian separatists, not Ukraine.

The problem for Russia is the EU and US won't have any of it.  This is tantamount to Pan-Am Flight 103.  There won't be any excuses about "ooops we thought it was a Ukrainian military transport jet".  As little confidence as I've expressed in Obama at times here on this very forum, I fully expect Obama is furious right about now.

You are the man, bro, but I can read the same Internets as you. It's going to take some time before there is confirmation of this. I tend to agree with you.

Well, certainly they would have had to believed it was a military transport jet, no?  If you are saying that is incredibly reckless, I agree, but I doubt they intended to shoot down a Malaysian passenger airplane.

I've followed the situation there pretty closely.  News agencies are cautious not to jump the gun on this, but I am telling you now, it was pro-Russian separatists.  There is no way Ukraine shot that plane down.  It would not have made any sense to do so as the plane would have been over Ukrainian air space for quite a while before reaching the point it did and where they shot it down would have exited Ukrainian air space on it's own flight path within about 60 seconds.  Further, the militants in East Ukraine do not have jets or planes, but they do have BUK anti-aircraft rocket systems that can shoot down jets flying at 32,000 feet and have already used those against Ukrainian forces in the region earlier in the week.

Unless like the IRS :), I find it incredibly hard to believe that passenger airplane coincidentally went down in the same airspace where pro-Russian separatists have been shooting BUK missiles at large planes. Im not sure people like John McCain will hold their tongues for longer than a day...

John McCain warns there will be 'hell to pay' if Russia shot down Malaysian plane http://read.bi/1kzVFM8

According to local reports, pro-Russia rebels were the first to arrive and have taken control of the crash site.

When I first saw the subject line I thought that it was referring to that missing Malaysian airliner and that now news came out that it was shot down.

What a tragedy, seems like US airlines have been avoiding that region for a while.

Yeah, you would think Malaysia of all countries would be taking every precaution necessary these days for their commercial flights.  ohlord

I don't want to take away from the point that it's very plausible these idiots knew what they were shooting at when they did it. Unless you're a complete moron, you know the difference between a Ukrainian military transport plane and a commercial airliner. These are not complete morons as they were trained well enough to operate BUK rocket systems. Not only that but there were apparently tons of commercial flights going over this area daily.

I'm not sure if it's that simple. Remember that even the US has shot down a commercial airliner before, but that was 20+ years ago. Maybe they are complete morons. But it is definitely plausible.

Valid points.  I am not feeling very generous towards these thugs in Eastern Ukraine, but in their case, if they did mistake commercial aviation for a Ukrainian military plane, it doesn't change what they did.  They're still 100% culpable.   I suspect the radar technology used nowadays (even in Russia) is superior to the radar technology we had aboard the Vincennes back in the 80's.
