They weren't going to go undefeated in the BE, but I didn't expect them to lose to Notre Dame.

Their starting Center, Fab Melo was out last night, is also out on Monday @ Cincy and will possibly miss the rest of the semester due to an "unresolved academic issue." (My take: He failed a class or two.) His absence impacted the game in a BIG way.

ND had their way with Cuse in the paint, thus opening up their shooters as the zone wasn't extended as far due to the dumpoffs that Cooley (their Luke Harangody big man look-alike) got all game.

Plus, SU picked a bad time to have their worst shooting night of the season. Combining that with ND's "stall ball" technique which limited SU's chances to get turnovers (leading to points in transition), and them shooting lights out from deep, and it was a perfect storm for an upset.

SU showed some heart by fighting until the end, but this game exposed a weakness that they've had all season, they don't have forwards that can rebound the ball. Without Melo, this team will struggle against physical play from other teams.

I'm not holding my breath for them to beat Cincy on Monday, the season hinges on Tuesday IMO, when we'll find out if Fab Melo can play the rest of the season, or if he's "academically ineligible" and will not be able to play from here on out. If that's the case, Cuse no longer is a lock to be a F4 team.

Losing him was a big deal.  It also killed their momentum.  I immediately laid some rubles on the match when I saw he was out.  Syracuse is still very good, but we will see how they respond and whether, like you said, Melo is out for a longer time.  I agree that he probably failed a class.  Not sure what that means playing-wise.

Top 5 in the Coaches Poll.

1. Kentucky
2. Syracuse
3. Ohio St
4. Missouri
5. Duke

At this point, #1 seeds should be Kentucky (closest thing to a lock), Syracuse, Ohio State and Duke/UNC.

It's going to be a good game. I really hope Cuse can continue to play GT even after we move to the ACC. Maybe a home and away every other year.

Yeah, it sucks to lose the rivalry. From what I heard, Beoheim really has no desire to leave the BE, and I can appreciate that.

I heard that they are expecting 30,000+ for the game. Duke-UNC is on afterwards, so you might as well forget about them making a big deal of our game and losing the rivalry, etc, but I think Syracuse is the best team right now, especially after Melo came back, and Georgetown definitely has a chance to finish high in the BE, but the focus will all be on Duke-UNC.

Great Georgetown-Syracuse game. Congrats. Thought either team could have won.

Georgetown could and should have won. They crushed Syracuse on the glass all night.

The only thing was that Kris Joseph picked a great day to have a career game.

GT's going to be a tough out in the tourney. JT3 has them playing well down the stretch.

This has become a big problem for the Cuse.  But if they can figure it out, they've really got it all.

Annoyed that I gave up on the Duke-UNC game to catch up on sleep...figured it was over when it was a 14 pt game in the 2nd half.

Ditto -- though I wouldn't have enjoyed it.  ohlord

They figured it out today. They don't need to crush teams on the glass, only keep it close. They beat UConn on the boards today, and Waiters got back on track.

Big win, especially with two top recruits in the house, Noel Nerlens and Tyler Ennis.

Monday's game on the road against Louisville will really show how good this team is, IMO. If they can take that, they shouldn't lose again in the regular season.

How can a zone team with Syracuse's size and athleticism get killed on the boards?

Great game between the Cuse and Louisville right now.

DocK16 wrote: How can a zone team with Syracuse's size and athleticism get killed on the boards?

Great game between the Cuse and Louisville right now.

Because they don't have a true power forward, and when Melo creeps up in the zone to challenge as a shot blocker, the wings are left open for the offensive board because our wing players don't rebound, they're already getting down court for the fast break.

Kris Joseph has never been one to mix it up on the boards, and outside of Fab Melo and CJ Fair, there isn't really anyone else that will mix it up on the glass.

Rakeem Christmas has not developed as quickly as one would have hoped, thus forcing Boeheim to play small most of the game with Joseph and Fair at the back of the zone.

The reason they're getting killed on the glass is because they're giving up one, sometimes two offensive rebounds on one possession. It may not be the first one that kills them, but you can't keep giving teams second and third chances each possession on offense.

Bottom line, this team can win any kind of game. They're 26-1 right now and will probably get the #1 overall seed this March.

They're a true national championship contender. Look at their RPI compared to UK or anyone else's. It's not even close. The only game they've lost they lost without their most important player on defense. UK's one loss came at full strength.

I called it back in November. Syracuse is the real deal.

espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/bracketology

9 big east teams in, 8 big ten teams.

Interesting note: Mountain West and West Coast conf. get 3 teams in, yet the Pac-12 only would get 2.

Michigan a 4-seed in west region. That bracket looks real appealing for UM if that panned out! Big primetime game vs. Ohio with ESPN college gameday on campus saturday!

Cuse 1 seed in East with potential second weekend in Boston, MA.

How about Seton Hall in there as a 12-seed, didn't even know they were a bubble worthy candidate.

7 Notre Dame vs. 10 Purdue is an interesting first round, in-state matchup.

Yep, February can't get over fast enough.

Michigan a potential 3-seed in the East, something I dreaded seeing Michigan and Cuse in same side of bracket. Michigan could also face their old Fab Five coach, Steve Fisher and San Diego State in 2nd round.

Cuse still #1 in East.

Memphis at #8 in south with potential 2nd round matchup vs. Kentucky and their ol' coach, that'd be some fireworks!

#7 Vandy in East vs. Harvard with 2nd round matchup vs. Duke, Vandy would give Duke a huge run IMO.

UNLV as a 4-seed in the West, that team is dangerous.

North Carolina State, coming off a choke-job at Duke last night where they blew a 20-point lead, would be in the play-in game vs. drama-filled Illinois. Other play-in is Washington-Miami Fla.

Cuse-Kentucky-Kansas-Missouri are the 4 #1 seeds, frankly Im not sure if that will change over next few weeks.
