Alderson: Mets Can (And Maybe Should) Win 90 Games

Quotes are quotes, especially in Met-Land these days.  However, I'll post for anyone who cares to discuss.

Otherwise?

Pass the dutchie.......on the left hand side.  biggrin

...........love ol' Freddie chiming in.

PORT ST. LUCIE — At a staff meeting a couple of days ago, Sandy Alderson told Mets executives and baseball personnel that he strongly believes that the ballclub can and maybe even should win 90 games this season.

Yes, 90.

And, according to people who were in the room, after Alderson’s decree prompted discussion about how to best maximize the Mets’ assets, owner Fred Wilpon chimed in at one point with his own pointed assessment.

“We better win 90,” he said, according to a source.

If Harvey were healthy I could see this happening.

Well, at least Sandy finally made a sarcastic comment that is positive about the Mets...That's a first.

No, of course not.  Everyone arrived in the best shape of their careers, having conquered the mental demons that haunted them in the past, and figured out the hitches in their swing or their pitching motion.  Right? biggrin

does he want to get fired? Is this his play? How can any of them expect the fanbase to not laugh? If Fred is convinced of this, it just goes to show how truly clueless of a baseball man he is and should sell.

The only plausible explanation is this was said to serve notice on the eventual 25 man roster that the party is over and showing up is not enough anymore.

As an athlete, employee, what have you - you hold yourself to a high standard to perform in your job......but when your boss puts a pretty nutty expectation out there, from the starting gate - all you can do is put your best foot forward.

.........even still, I'm sure there are more than a few players who privately chuckled to themselves over the mention of this - especially given the Met attempts of upgrading.

Maybe there are enough young bucks there to say to themselves, "Hey, what the hell? why not us?!!" ---- but everyone closely-enough associated with this particular franchise knows what it takes to win 90 games in a year with actual expectation from proven players.

While what Alderson said took place in a staff meeting, you still have to know that it's getting out there - by hook or crook - to the media.

Say whatever you'd like - set high standards, lofty expectation for achievement.....CHANGE THE WORLD, if you think you can.......

I still don't see how this team finishes at .500 - let alone ups the ante, and has healthy - career-kind of production to the tune of anything approaching 90 wins.

- Not with the question marks they have - at the positions they're for,
- Not with the way they've attempted to construct themselves, whether in who they've targeted - or how much they'd ideally like to play certain players.

It's all just weird to me.

Wonder if they're all taking their money and betting the Over in Vegas? tongue

Things have to take place in order to get better.  A helluva lot of 'em have to this year for the Mets to approach 90 wins.

I don't have a problem with what Sandy said. He should set the bar high. IIRC we were a .500 team from June 1st onward last season and that was with some injuries (including Harvey)? If Ike is healthy, Tejada's in better shape and Colon retraces 2013, then we could surprise a lot of people. Right now I have us finishing the season at 82-80, but anything is possible.

Colon is gonna need lap band surgery to survive in the NL

I see a lot of people joking on him here, but as I mentioned, if he gives us anything like he gave the A's last season, we're going to have a pretty strong rotation.  With three CF's playing the OF now, our pitching and defense will be maximized.  I think we'll win a lot of low-scoring games.  I could be wrong, but I still believe there is a light at the end here.

^ While that remains to be seen.......I do feel strongly that Collins is gonna need a bullpen 17 guys deep, with the way he attempts to utilize relievers.

The idea that the Mets want 3-4 younger relievers to step up - in yet to be defined roles, coupled with the "expect big things in the later innings"-type philosophy (asking guys like Farnsworth-Valverde-Parnell to handle the brunt) - it will lend further credence as to why I feel they'll probably struggle to win 80 games.

.......let alone the perceived ("They'd Better!) notion of 90 wins. I'm not taking it literally, nor am I railing on them for the idea of setting lofty goals ---- but I will chuckle when I think something's really wacky.

These guys aren't entitled to anything.  I think Sandy's just being honest.  "Hey this is what is expected and if it doesn't happen, you're out of a job."  I can respect that.

That's fine, and I'm not going to crucify Alderson for anything.  He said what he said in a meeting, and had to know that it would all leak to the press somehow - no big deal, at least on the basis of he's said nuttier straight to people's faces.....whether for snark, or to make light of it.

The funniest part of it, to me anyway, is the part where Fred interjects with the "They'd better!" line........intentionally said or facetiously, it's the height of comedy to me - given his role in derailing the franchise.
