June 13, 2013: Cardinals @ Mets (Wainwright-Harvey) 1:10 PM

Mother Nature hasn't been kind to the Mets. And if Thursday's forecast of rain and thunderstorms in New York is correct, the Mets may have their seventh postponed game of the season, this one the series finale with the Cardinals.

"Now, with the schedule still so unbalanced that you only play one team one time, you play them one time at home, it's a day-to-day problem," said Mets manager Terry Collins.

If weather permits, a pair of Cy Young candidates will match up at Citi Field on Thursday, as Matt Harvey takes the mound for the Mets and Adam Wainwright gets the start for the Cardinals. Both are likely to receive consideration to start for the National League in next month's All-Star Game.

Though the Mets lost the most recent game Harvey started, he is 5-0 on the season. He is the 29th pitcher to have eight no-decisions over his last nine starts, and his 2.66 ERA is the best in such a stretch.

Wainwright, who is 9-3 with a 2.34 ERA, hasn't beaten the Mets since April 2010 and has four straight losses against them, including a 5-2 defeat last month in which he surrendered three earned runs on six hits and one walk.

In the middle of a 10-game stretch against the Mets, Marlins and Cubs, all teams with sub-.500 records, the Cardinals will be looking to put some distance between themselves and the division-rival Reds and Pirates. St. Louis is an NL-best 23-11 on the road.

"I think it just comes out in a wash at the end," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "I think any discrepancies have probably played themselves out. We don't think too much about that stuff."

Mets: Seventh rainout looming

If Thursday's game is rained out, it will further complicate the Mets' already tortuous schedule.

With six rainouts already in the books, the Mets will likely have to find an opportunity to make up the series finale with the Cardinals and would once again have to shuffle their rotation.

"I don't think anybody in baseball has gone through what we've gone through this year," Collins said.

The two teams don't play again this season and share just one common off-day. More problematic is that the postponed games are being rescheduled for later in the season, when the game days are hotter, and sacrificing valuable off-days.

"We've had so many days off early, it's not like anybody's tired," Collins said. "But when it starts getting 90 degrees every day and it's July, it's going to take its toll to where you've really got to make sure guys are getting days off to keep their energy up, because it's going to wear them down."

Cardinals: Hit streaks come to an end

Both Matt Carpenter and David Freese saw their career-high hit streaks come to an end this week.

At 20 games, Freese had the longest streak in the Majors this season. After slumping in the first month and a half of the season, he hit a grand slam on May 17 and had a hit in every game he played until Wednesday, steadily raising his average from .211 to .287 over the span. He went 0-for-4 against the Mets on Wednesday.

Carpenter, two games behind Freese at 18 games, went hitless Tuesday to end his streak.

Worth noting

• Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook will come off the disabled list to start on Friday, taking Tyler Lyons' place in the rotation. Matheny said that the Cardinals have not decided on a roster move to make room for Westbrook on the roster.

• Allen Craig admitted to soreness after hitting his head on the right-field wall at Citi Field on Tuesday but was back in the lineup Wednesday and knocked a solo blast to left field in the sixth inning.

• Collins said that the struggles of catcher John Buck are a result of him trying to do too much at the plate. Buck is 18-for-103 since May 3, and nine of his 11 home runs came in April.

"I think John's just trying to step up and pick up that big load, because he did early," Collins said. "No one guy can do it by himself."

Well......it looks like the weather system is moving through faster than originally expected.....perhaps they will throw out the first pitch at around 4 PM?

Yeah, this will be interesting because the teams make the call until the game starts, right? The Mets dont have to travel, but the Cards obviously do. As it says above, they would also have a hard time rescheduling, and this game could be important to the Cardinals.

Every time I watch Wainwright pitch against the Mets, I want to personally apologize to Beltran for being so pissed about him striking out. That is just a vicious, vicious hammer he throws.

Beltran's first at bat against Harvey lasted three pitches...ending with a swing and miss on a ball 12 feet out of the zone.

Problem is, Wainwright is pitching.  He keeps giving me flashbacks to 2006.

The dreaded sig of doom has chosen future hall of famer Jason Heyward as its target.

May the baseball gods have mercy on your soul!

I could see us getting no-hit today. Wainwright is on his game.

Wainwright is definitely on his game today. Not looking good for our offense.

Mets are down 1-0, on an RBI triple by Matt Carpenter in the 3rd -- by the way.

Duda just missed the 3-Run homer. Wainwright got in on him just enough.

Is Harvey ever going to win another baseball game this year? The only time this year we scored a bunch of runs for him was the 1 game he pitched poorly!

Kirk has zero chance against Wainwright. I have more faith in Harvey hitting.

In 13 starts this season, Harvey has given up 2 runs or less 10 times, 3 runs once, and 4 runs twice. Insane.

Feels like Johan's first year here.  Poor Harvey should have AT LEAST 4 more wins than he does.

Still 1-0 in the 8th, by the way.
