Mets 4th Rnd Pick: Branden Kaupe, SS/INF

http://www.teamhawaiibaseball....branden-kaupe-0 - a personal site of his -- lists his height as 5'8" (than I'm 6-flat!) and his email address is Phillies related banghead

Aloha, my name is Branden Kaupe, born & raised on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Currently attending Baldwin High School and have competed in both baseball & football all of my life. From the age of four, I played my first t-ball game and continued to participate in both the Little League and Horse League. For me, baseball is my passion and I would like to continue playing beyond high school. I feel that hard work, dedication & perseverance starts within and will end positively, no matter the outcome. Keeping a positive attitude for myself and toward others has always contributed to my leadership & team player mentality all these years.

During my freshmen year, I was selected to move up with the Varsity Baseball Team. My experience of playing with older, stronger and seasoned players has helped me compete at a higher level. I enjoy the competition of sports, and always believed that one day I would achieve my passion in experiencing the next level of baseball with hard work & determination.

4th Rd Pick – SS Brendan Kaupe

By Toby Hyde on 05. Jun, 2012

In the fourth round of the 2012 draft, at #140 overall, the Mets selected SS Brendan Kaupe from Baldwin HS in Hawaii. He was not ranked in Baseball America’s pre-draft Top 500.

At the time he was drafted, Jim Callis on the MLB.tv stream reported: “…not really a great year talent wise in Hawaii, I’ll go ahead and admit it, he’s off my radar.”

Kaupe is short at 5’7″, but listed at a solidly built 175 lbs.

BRANDON KAUPE, ss, Baldwin HS, Wailuku

Scouts from the mainland got an early look at the top high-school talent in Hawaii, and left with the impression that the 5-foot-5, 175-pound Kaupe was the best talent in this year’s class. Despite his obvious lack of size, Kaupe showcased impressive speed and solid actions at shortstop, though he probably faces a shift across the bag to second base as he advances. Kaupe also showed some ability as a switch-hitter to drive balls.

Might be a case of DePodesta trying to prove how much smarter he is than everybody else.

My only issue, if he wasn't even in BA's Top 500, is why get him as early as Round 4?

I guess the Mets thought a switch hitting SS would be slightly over-picked?

I hope it wasn't "just" the fact he virtually never strikes out.

Either way, I like the kid. Maybe he is here just to push Cecchini towards his ceiling. Will be fun to follow 2 high school SS's the next few years.

Also, heads up to Branden -- probably not a good idea to put your exact address in an online site you run and setup, especially now you are officially a professional baseball player.

Ugh, I certainly hope he isn't a Victorino fan.

Don't think so. His role, and uniform model, is most likely Freddy Patek.

Maui News

Kaupe has signed a scholarship agreement with Central Arizona Junior College, but said he will sign with the Mets when a team representative comes to Maui next week. He is listed as shortstop on the Mets' website, but said he expects to play second base in the long run.

"They just listed me at shortstop because that is what I played my senior year," he said. "I am going to sign --- I haven't talked money yet, but that will all happen next week."

Maybe they hope they can sign him for under slot so they can use the money for tougher signs

This is definitely a pick made to save some cap money. I am told, however, that the least you can pay someone is 40 pct of the cap for that specific pick. Say 4th round slot is 500K (I'm guessing) you'd have to pay him at least 200K. Is anyone else aware of this rule?

If this is really the rule then you will be overpaying BK unless you legitimately believe he is approximately an 8th to 10th round talent. This might be one of the quirks of the new system- overdrafted players get a windfall. And college seniors get the bare minimum you can pay them.

Well slot there is $323.9k. Last year it would have been only $186.3k.

And I haven't heard the 40% rule, but even so he would only be getting $130k. He's likely worth that. Kid hit .511, slugged .889, showed good infield actions defensively, and ran a 6.46 60. That looks like potentially a decent hit tool, and probably grade 70 speed.

I've read that if you offer a player less than 40% and if the player fails a physical, then he can be a free agent and the team loses the slot allotment.

Seems like Wright is going to be gone soon, the Mighty Kaupe is gonna replace him:

• Amateur scouting director Tommy Tanous watched Hawaii prep shortstop Branden Kaupe (fourth round) hit an inside-the-park homer while scouting one game. Tanous praised Kaupe’s speed and said he can play anywhere in the infield, including the left side because of a strong arm.

i'd be shocked if another team had Kaupe in their top 400.  that said, considering the drafting shenanigans that were allegedly being discussed, it's less of a reach in that context... meaning that maybe they reached a deal with him for 200K less than slot...  noidea still seems like a wasted pick... the odds of a 5'4" player reaching even the upper minors have to be pretty long.

I like how he's gone from 5'7" to 5'5" to 5'4" biggrin

I'm going to say that the Mighty Kaupe is 5'1"

I wonder if his stature will also help him get more SBs; since he's so small, he might be tough to tag out.

if Kaupe is 5'7" 175, then I am 6'9" and 300.  In the video I saw, the bat looked bigger than him.  He can't be more than 5'5" 150.
