I realize time is running out, but how in the hell are we still only 6 GB in the WC?

Amazing opportunity. Really is. They just don't want to grab it...or take it. Or can't.

deGrom going on the DL hurts and I really don't want to see this "tryout" of new faces until they are further out. Stick with the current lineup and let Kirk and MDD go to town in LF.

Stranger things have happened, but I won't get interested until we cut the deficit down to 3 GB.  If that were to happen, it'd get pretty interesting around here.  For perspective, a .500 record puts you 3 GB today.  Mets need to do something silly and unheard of like win 6 straight.  Then, anything can happen.  But, I'd be truly shocked.  This team can barely string together 3 wins.

Can't. Now if they were to make a trade for a big bat to help the offense... that's another issue. But who's out there? there are no real standout options.

Well, I was hoping that our guru in the FO would have cut a trade by July 31 for a power LF bat..not to be. I have no idea who or what was available but the way it played out in the news was that Sandy wasn't all that interested in making any trade or pursuing any deal.

I'm going to make a bold prediction and say this will be BFB's last start as a Met.

Question: Which two baseball teams are an Italian's favorite?

Answer:  The A's and O's

I didnt realize that San Diego has been playing that well.  It is me, or do they do this every year?  They seem to be above .500, or at least much better, in the second half of the season, after starting miserably.

Well, that's not quite the way I remember it.  He didn't see a deal that made sense.  Even if we traded for CarGo today, our chances of making the playoffs are < 2%.  So, there's no point in overpaying for a guy now.  The off-season would be the time to swing a big deal honestly.

On paper they look awful.  Not sure how they stay competitive.

Our stretch of games we're in right now just killer.

4 vs Wild Card Leader San Fransisco
3 @ Divisional Leader Washington
4 @ Awful Philly
3 vs Divisional Leader Washington
4 vs Awful Cubs
2 @ AL Leading Oakland
3 @ NL Leading LA

If we can get through this stretch and still be within 5 games or so of the Wild Card heading into these 15 games, then we might be able to revisit this whole debate.

3 vs Atlanta
3 vs Awful Philly
3 @ Mediocre Miami
3 @ Mediocre Cincy
3 vs Awful Colorado

The dreaded sig of doom has chosen future hall of famer Jason Heyward as its target.

May the baseball gods have mercy on your soul!

The number of teams in between the Mets and the second WC and the number of games left  is more important than the number of games out.

There are six teams with better records than the Mets in the WC race. It doesnt matter if they're only six games out. Thats like saying a golfer is only four shots off the lead....sounds great, until you find out there are six guys between that guy and the leader.

Saying the Mets are "only" six games back (with 42 games to play)  is just continuing the illusion that the Mets have an outside chance at a WC spot. They dont.

None of the teams in front of us with the exception of Pittsburgh have played inspired down the stretch. Pittsburgh will likely retain their spot.

Kirk is the 4th outfielder.  The Mets seem to like MDD more, and I agree.  Keith Hernandez continuously raves about MDD's swing, especially with the changes he made recently.  Listening to Keith, maybe MDD will finally develop into a pretty decent major league hitter to go along with his great defense.

Of course they have an outside chance at a WC spot. But it's "just a bit outside" as Bob Uecker would say. Maybe "very outside" if you prefer. I've seen less likely things happen. The key is that they can't win a WC spot by playing okay and hopeing that 5 other teams fall apart. They need to get legitimately hot for most of the rest of the season.

Excellent job by BFB to  get out of the 1st and 3rd with no outs jam.  Heck of a performance so far in the last start of his Mets career.
