Starting to feel a little like the last 2 years. We like all these guys, and watch them go elsewhere one by one. Like I said about the Yankees, teams that know what they are doing assess who they want and go get them. Other teams, huh.gif.

If it's for 4/52, I won't mind losing out on him.

54/4 is about the highest I could see being justifiable. If it's that much or more, I don't blame Sandy for not doing it, though I do think the Tigers missed out by not giving him a QO. I'll be surprised if it's not 4 years (or 3 plus an easy vest). I think he would have held out longer if it's something like 39/3 or less.

From my offseason plan: "I think he can sign for something like $24M/3 years."

And I though Stacks was optimistic with his trades.

i team that offered $52M for 4 yrs for peralta was told they're not even in game. will be fascinating how high it goes.

------------
I have a hard time seeing an organization like St. Louis handing out a crazy contract that tops that to a guy like Peralta.  Very curious to see the final total.  Also curious to see what this does to the Drew market; I really think he could be "Bourned/Loshed" because of the draft pick comp and the fact that he's got a few so-so years prior to 2013 on his resume.

Not good at all! If true. The Mets cannot have an expectation of competing if they continue to not pursue high priced talent on the FA market. Some of us had reservations. Peralta was a good fit at SS. Have to go after Drew

You have no clue what Peralta got.

He'll get what the market bears...
Thats how it works.

FO has 2 choices. Refrain from paying over market value (yes, it IS the way to get these players and sometimes you have to make that allowance when you've had 5 years of dysfunction) or find 8 Marlon Byrd's from last year, maybe sprinkle in a few others. Mets need a SS, badly.

True.  I guess they are spending the money they get from Beltran leaving.

The point is you can't criticize them for failing to sign a player when you have absolutely no clue the contract that player got. The fact your instinctual reaction was not to be curious about the terms of the deal, but to be angry at the Mets for not matching the value of a contract that you have zero knowledge of says everything about your point of view.

Sure I can. Beyond that, you can tone down your rhetoric. There was no anger in my post and what I said is true. They have to pursue AND overpay if there's an expectation to win.

Re: Report: Jhonny Peralta close to deal with Cardinals

All is not lost at SS.  Trade Murphy to the White Sox for Alexi Ramirez. Alexi is owed 20 million over the next two years (w/10 million option and 1 million buyout in 2016). Comes out to perhaps 10 million more than paying Murphy in arbitration for the next two years.

Follow up by signing Mark Ellis to play 2nd base for 1/4 million or 2/7 and have a superior MI defense.

"Sure I can."

So what if he got 6 years, 100 million? Where would you draw the line at? How much exactly are you willing to pay for a guy who's had a sub .700 OPS three out of the last five years?
