noidea

Maybe hope for some Mike Cameron-type production.  Same kind of pitfalls, however.

The # Mets, after reaching agreement with OF Chris Young, remain in the mix for another right-handed hitting outfielder, Nelson Cruz.

A low risk/moderate upside signing...probably not what most Met fans wanted to hear so cue the snark.

RE: BREAKING: Mets Sign OF C. Young

I'm just gonna put it out there that I'm not expecting all that much, considering he's:

- not a spring chicken
- stands to take a hit, offensively -- in coming to hit at Citi Field; and
- is likely going to be relied upon to play regularly in our outfield, presuming good health....otherwise, he'd almost certainly be elsewhere.

The good thing about the situation is: you can at least hedge your bets a little bit more, across the outfield....specifically, looking at CF - provided Lagares regresses at the plate in his sophomore season.  (Young's tools do play very well as a part-time starter.)

Very curious to see what the financials are.

Chris Young's platoon splits vs. RHP: .225/.295/.415 vs. LHP: .262/.363/.474

RE: BREAKING: Mets Sign OF C. Young

Solid signing, assuming the money's right.

1) He's just 30 next year. Not exactly an aging crow.
2) He had 3 consecutive above average seasons (two of which were 4+ WAR) before getting hurt last year.
3) He's very good v. LHP, but not a total liability v. RHP.
4) He'd been an outstanding 4th OF to have on a team with Choo. tongue

I like his versatility. Good buy-low bet.

Would've paired well with David Murphy. noidea (Would look better paired with Choo.)

I don't like +/- 220 BA / 300 OBP / <4 00 PA last 2 season.  He will hit Ike like numbers here at Citi.  Not a fabulous defender either.  Where does he play?  Not CF.

No, but is almost certainly at a point where he "is what he is".....which is limited, and coming to a park that's been murder on the hitters that play in it most.

That's where I'm most skeptical about it.  We'll see how things shake out.

Haha...well, I still there the possibility exists, however unlikely. The other option is a Young/den Dekker soft platoon, which also seems unlikely given how little playing time MdD got down the stretch.

How much money would you guess?

4.5 mil?

This effectively replaces Marlon Byrd's spot.

Personally, I'd figure it to be more than that.  If they got him for that kind of $$, then I can't really argue much.

Doubt it, though.  He made almost double that (think it was $8.5MM?) in 2013.

And, 30 year old players of his profile tend not to have a spike in production.  These type guys generally fall out of the league by age 32.

Sure. But what he is is a guy who's posted multiple 4 WAR seasons. Last year's BABIP was absurdly low. He projects at 1.7 wins in just 97 games. I'll take that on a 1-year deal.

If this is Sandy's big OF acquisition, that's awful. But as a complementary piece, or one guy in a solid 5-man OF, he's a solid signing.
