Mets, Jay-Z discuss Cano

So Jeff Wilpon, Sandy Alderson and John Ricco had dinner with Jay-Z last night to discuss Cano. I hope they had a lovely time.

I'll take secret meetings with Choo and Ellsbury thank you very much. The Mets don't have the balls and apparently the "budget" to make this type of move. Cano and Wright on the Mets would be insane though. Cano would pay himself.

Stunna, every report and event shouldn't be viewed as an attempt to bash the Mets.  This isn't a Mets bashing forum.  Take that stuff elsewhere and debate each topic on its merits.

I'm not debating this with you either.

Do they though? I am discussing the topic for what it is, and I think it's BS. If they prove me otherwise and make a real legitimate offer then there is nothing to complain about because at least they were in the market and tried. I'm not a Mets-basher, but my frustration level is pretty high right now.

Just stop already. Focus on players in the plans.

Well, I suppose anything can happen. But it is not a realistic option.

Interesting that the Mets took the meeting, however. I guess it is good diplomacy or creating goodwill. Never hurts to create goodwill.

If Cano's team thought this would create more leverage for them they are mistaken. Not sure what they were thinking.

I'm usually the one who likes to go after FAs and sign players. But this year, despite the protected pick, I've been saying for some time now maybe the Mets should pass. Certainly on the more expensive FAs. Seems like 2014 is not their year.

JayZ looks like he is going to be a factor in this game going forward...not a bad idea to build a relationship now. Odds are he'll have a player were interested in down the road.

I think that's a legitimate statement, Dock... Stuna probably didn't put it in the most eloquent way.... another way to put it would be that this type of move is not consistent with the strategy of the Mets organization at this time, for philosophical and budgetary reasons. I don't see it as a knock on the Mets, just an observation of the current status of the team that renders a move for Cano unlikely.

Nothing wrong with stating it your way, BIMM. One is constructive the other is venting.

Signing Cano sure would change the Mets image 180 degrees.  No more cheap Wilpon threads, etc.

Any word on whether or not a "dine & dash" was executed?

I don't see this as anything more than "Mets Have Dinner w/Cano" -- hard to take any interest his way seriously.

While I would love to add Cano's talents to this team, I sure as hell don't want to pay him the type of contract he wants.  This guy wants an Arod contract and he's not even close to being worth that.  I'd rather spend the money on a few good players vs one/two great players.  I'd rather the Mets have a solid depth of good players vs being top heavy and lacking depth.

RE: Mets, Jay-Z discuss Cano

It's a smart move for both sides to start developing a relationship.  It's not like Cano was even there.  It's really a no brainer, especially for Cano's people, to meet with the Mets since they are in the same city.

Ultimately, it wouldn't surprise me if this was initiated by Jeff Wilpon to show people the Mets have money to spend and are in on the top players.  Obviously, he will just continue to get ridiculed though unless they sign him.  I know everyone likes to blame the Mets approach to spending on the Wilpons, but I think Jeff wants to spend--and Sandy's whole philosophy is to avoid owing $65M to Wright, Cano, and Choo (or similar players) in their late 30's 4-5 years from now.  If in the one in a million chance the Mets sign Cano, I would bet it was all Jeff Wilpon.

I agree, you cant on one hand bash the Mets when they are linked to retreads on rumor and innuendo, and then bash the Mets when they are linked to superstars on the same evidence.

I, for one, welcome these types of rumorsbiggrin

"I sure as hell don't want to pay him the type of contract he wants. "

He-slash-JayZ threw out a fairly ridiculous number, 10/$305M. IMO no different from when Boras threw out figures of ~6/$100M for Bourn last year. Just a high end number to counter the low-end initial number that teams will throw out, so that they can meet in the middle and feel like everyone won.

I'm pretty sure that something like 8/$200M will be in the neighborhood. And IMO, putting aside the positional needs of this particular team, I think I'd rather have Cano for 8/$200M than Choo for 6/$100M+ or Ellsbury for 7/$140M+.

RE: Mets, Jay-Z discuss Cano

The Yankees are currently offering around 7 years $160M (from what I've read).  I don't see them increasing that unless someone comes in higher...is someone going to come in higher than that?  Haven't really heard him connected to any other team yet....which could also explain why this meeting took place.  It was definitely to the advantage of both sides to "meet to discuss Cano."
