Re: Report:Wally Backman Irks Mets, Has ‘Zero Chance’ Of Taking

I don't really have a problem with what Backman said.  Being confident in himself and his people and expressing a willingness to go to great lengths to tackle Ike's issues shouldn't really be taken as a slight towards Hudgens and the work of those at the big league level.  At least not in the context of what I read.

That said, I don't think it's much of a surprise that Wally isn't the FO's favorite to replace TC, assuming he's replaced at all.

RE: Report:Wally Backman Irks Mets, Has ‘Zero Chance’ Of Taking

I stayed away from posting this, largely because it essentially boils down to "say nothing at all" unless you're actually a member of the Major League Mets. Usually then, you can say whatever you want in the press.....even if it makes little to no sense at all.

Unless Backman went on with Francesa - without clearance from the organization.....there's nothing wrong with what he actually said.  (Hey, maybe they don't care if Ike Davis gets himself right - and view Backman's positive commentary as problematic....that's even dumber, IMHO.)

All this reads to me is: people just love to get "up in arms" over anything Backman-related.

Just love when no one takes credit for what was said.  This has happened a lot since Jeff Wilpon has been involved..

Report:Wally Backman Irks Mets, Has ‘Zero Chance’ Of Taking Over

This report is completely dishonest. If you read the Newsday article, it makes it clear that Wally had zero chance of ever becoming the manager because of stylistic differences with the current regime. It has nothing to do with this incident, if you even want to call it an incident. I'm far from a Backman supporter, but this is a cynical attempt to play on Wally's reputation as a controversial figure and its unfair, IMHO. Not to mention its ridiculous that anyone in the FO would actually be upset with anything Wally said.

Between this and the Baxter thing, this team is awfully sensitive for a team that completely sucks right now. I'm not real interested in whose feelings are hurt.

Seriously, it's getting early quick in Metland. Those poor journalists know that interest in the Mets and thus, their content is almost down to zero...

I don't think that what he said should be controversial at all, if it really is.

I don't get why people would be irked about Wally's interview. This has been one of my biggest disappointments since Sandy took over. I'd hoped that the culture of player/personnel takedowns would be changes and the leaks cut off. I'd originally though it was a symptom of the sub-optimal functionality of the last front office. But maybe this is an issue higher up than GM. And before we point fingers at any one person in particular, let's not forget that ridiculous New Yorker article two years. How many players got thrown under the bus in that piece?

Backman said nothing wrong. What people should be taking issue with is Terry Collins after one game where Ike swung like a blind squirrel and got two hits and Collins said "I like what I'm seeing in his approach"....

Is he kidding? Or lying to be nice?

Backman will bring some much needed punch to this organization but he'll likely never get the chance as we churn out Terry Collins, Jerry Manuel, and Art Howe clones.

I think it's more about the NYC press than the organization. Although, I certainly think there is blame there too. In other cities, you'd certainly have an opinion-type writer and talk personality, but there wouldnt 7-10 of those from 7-10 different newspapers. The criticism is extensive here, to say the least.

Absolutely. I think the whole obsession with Wally Backman just because he was an 86 Met and a scrappy player is ridiculous. But this is a perfect example of why he can never be the manager here even if you think he deserves it. It would be Bobby Valentine in Boston all over again. The media would completely sabotage the guy by blowing things out of proportion and he would eventually not react well. ( Not saying he did that in this case).

Amen to that.  Any chance the Wilpons and Dolan (Knicks) can just sell??

The three most successful Mets managers = Gil Hodges, Davey Johnson, and Bobby Valentine.  DJ and BV were both outspoken and rubbed some people the wrong way (and still do).  Hodges I think also had a bit of an "edge" to him, and I seem to recall that he once pulled Cleon Jones from the field in the middle of an inning for lack of hustle.

Backman seems to me to be cut from a similar cloth (not that that guarantees him success as a MLB manager).

How many "nice guy" managers have the Mets had whole were unsuccessful?  Pretty much all.

The Mets next manager hire is crucial.  A mistake and Alderson's legacy with the Mets will not be a pretty one despite the apparent improvement in the lower minors.  Let's hope he makes the right call and doesn't exclude Backman as a possibility b/c he's perceived as arrogant, or something like that.

If Wally gets Ike hitting again, I predict that all will be forgiven.

This isn't an ownership thread. Lets keep it strictly about Backman.

Re: Report:Wally Backman Irks Mets, Has ‘Zero Chance’ Of Taking

I had no problem with what Wally said about Ike.  I wanted Wally to be the manager when Collins was hired and still want him to be the manager.   The only problem I had with Wally's interview with Mike was the fact that he used an expletive on air.  Curse words don't offend me at all but I just don't think it's very smart of Wally to curse on Francesa's show.  It wasn't as if it was a probing interview where Francesa was asking him hardball questions.  That sort of stuff can only hurt his chances of being manager because if he is cursing in that interview, the front office will ask itself; How will he handle the media grilling him after every loss? Smarten up Wally.
