oh god.  yep, exactly what they needed, another OFer.  so glad Andrew Brown got a real look.  this kinda strikes me of incompetence frankly.  I know some people say I'm just piling on the FO but I'm open for explanations.  I mean, is this going to be some new emphasis on defense in the OF?  Upgrading the OF defense is fine to focus on but Ankiel is a K machine.  ugh.

With 8 XBH in 65 PAs, he is already the 3rd best hitter on the Mets. And, as mookie13 noted, he is probably the 3rd best bp arm ;)

Yeah, this seems strange. Almost like desperation for a "name" to stoke some interest.

He sucks, but it's probably an upgrade.    At least we might get to see him throw someone out.   That would be fun.

If we are sifting through the dumpsters of Minute Maid Park, I would definitely rather have Fernando back.

Kirk
Cowbell
Byrd
Spin

I'm sure I'm missing one or more...

not the shake up I was looking for.

I actually like the idea of giving Ankiel a shot.

And I don't know why. Must be misery. ;-)

If it weren't for Matt Harvey, the casual baseball fan probably couldn't tell the difference between the Mets and the Astros in terms of on-field MLB talent.  Sad state of affairs.

Desperation for sure, but something had to be done. The real sad part is that this is probably the 2nd or 3rd best bat SA has acquired in 3 seasons here, after Hairston and Buck.

Laughing stock does not begin to describe this franchise.

The Astros would kill for our bullpen.  Seriously, they have one RP with an ERA under 4.00.

Signing Rick Ankiel is a desperation move?  Seriously?  Wow.

it's not a desperation move, but it's not a good move either.  35 K's in 65 PAs.

I think that I'd rather have Andrew Brown stick around instead. Ankiel would be fine in AAA. I guess Ankiel might be a bit more versatile since he used to play CF.

It has zero chance of working out, but suggesting signing a retread OFer to replace a retread OFer is a desperation reeks of desperation itself.  Desperation is prematurely promoting your stud SP prospect to appease crazed fans who can't come to terms with rebuilding.  That's the very definition of desperation.  This is not.

I guess it's desperation to want to see the team play a competitive brand of baseball...

I think very few people (here at least) think the team should have brought up Wheeler regardless of whether he's perceived to be ready, so I completely disagree with you there. I think most are calling for his call up bc they believe he's ready.  I even thought you were on that side.

moreover, no one hasn't "come to terms" with rebuilding so that's false also.  Rebuilding doesn't have to mean being Astros bad.

Ankiel is apparently going to be starting in CF tonight. I would rather have those ABs go to Osvaldo or Valdespin, though maybe they're shifting them to RF?

So would I.

However, Alderson stated that he really wanted to finish .500 this yr, so we are getting the veteran priority treatment.

I'd hardly call promoting a 23 year old pitcher with 200 pretty dominant AA/AAA innings a desperation move when 4/5 of your rotation is seemingly useless. But to sign a 33 year old CF who was recently dumped by the consensus worst baseball team of the decade after watching 5-6 absolute horror shows in CF so far this year kind of screams for desperation.
