Johan: Has 2nd Capsule Surgery

The Mets beat reporters, including Andy Martino, are tweeting that Alderson is going to have a conference call at 6:45 regarding Johan Santana.  The news has been termed as "major."

  1. Santana has not been around the complex much last two days (haven't seen him at all, in fact), and have been trying to figure out why.

  2. Don't know what Santana news is, but can assume not positive, and again, heard it characterized as "major." Stay tuned.

  3. Alderson conference call at that time.

  4. "major story" on Santana coming at 6:45, I'm told.

My guess is TJ surgery.  ohlord

JS being out for the year wouldn't even be consider major news to me at this point. That's how low my expectations are of him. It would've been great if he gave us 150-175 solid IP's... if not, no big deal, IMO.

I thought he'd pitch a maximum of 50 innings this season, so season ending injury won't be a surprise to me. Love him, but he's done as a Major Leaguer.

Awful way to unravel, just like Brandon Webb.

Looks like Hefner is sticking around for a bit longer.

And if anyone else falters I guess we see Wheeler sooner than later.

Too bad on Santana.  I was hoping he could last long enough to be traded for a good prospect mid-season.

I guess Santana made a deal with the devil to break the Mets' curse of the no no-hitters.  Terry Collins was so right to be concerned about his decision to leave him in to get the no-hitter.

OK, I'll ask it (along with wishing him well):
Is there an insurance policy that pays (at least part of) his salary?

Well, that trade really blew up in our faces.

LOL it really did. Imagine Gomez in CitiField? Carl Crawford-esque. Plus a 120M dollar contract off our backs.

Oh well, I'll always remember Johan for Game 151.

I'd still be surprised if they don't hold him out at least 20 days.....but worrying about Super 2 status is probably out the window. He'll be here by early May.

To sum up, 3 good seasons, coupled with 3 awful ones (2 of which he didn't throw a single pitch in). I'll always remember game 161 of '08 and his no hitter.

Total WAR of 12.6 in 6 seasons per Fangraphs. For between $20-$25 million a season, yikes.....

Agreed. He'll absolutely be held until May so we can retain his rights an extra year. If our SP is absolutely floundering (strong possibility at this point if Marcum also misses time), I can see Sandy disregarding his Super 2 status and promoting him in early May.

There is $31 million left on Santana's contract and Alderson said the deal is not insured, which is surprisingly common.
