David Wright Named 4th Captain in Met History

David Wright Named 4th Captain in Met History

link

"This is probably one of the proudest days of my career so far," Wright said. "... To be on that short list of guys that have been considered captain of this franchise is, for me, a dream come true to say the least and something I'm very, very, very proud about."

The decision to award Wright the captaincy essentially was sealed when the six-time All-Star agreed to an eight-year, $138 million contract in early December, chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said. The delay making it official came in part because Wright wanted to make sure the honor was not solely ownership-driven. Teammates gave their blessings in one-on-one conversations during spring training.

"I think the decision was made when we gave him the contract," Wilpon said. "Did we announce it then? No, we didn't announce it then. But I believe the decision was made at that point in time. When you commit that kind of money and resources that we have to a guy like this, you want to make sure he's the leader. And he's proven to be that."

He becomes the third active captain in the majors, joining the New York Yankees' Derek Jeter and the Chicago White Sox's Paul Konerko.

Like those other two players, Wright -- dubbed "Captain America" during the World Baseball Classic -- will not have a "C" on his jersey.

"Part of it, I think, is my personality, where I don't necessarily like to stick out too much," Wright said. "I think the uniform is uniform for a reason. So I think that everybody is kind of in agreement that we're going to do without."

Just confirms what the other players have known for at least 3 years.  Still, good for David.  One of my all time favorite Mets players.thumbsup.gif

As for wearing a “C” on his jersey, Wright, Terry Collins and Sandy Alderson agreed he will not wear it.

“A uniform is a uniform for a reason … Everyone is in agreement we will do without it,” Wright explained.

Good to hear.  Congrats Fiver.

At least now the Mets can't be accused of doing this just so they can sell new David Wright "C" jerseys./tongue

A tip of the cap to a real Met.  A guy that was drafted by the Mets and chose to stay a Met when he easily could have said he was worried about being stuck on a poor team.

We haven't had many of these types and I wish he had some help....but thank goodness for Wright.

I'm sure Wilpon is pissed.

I assure you that they are making some sort of tee shorts with a reference to the captaincy.

Well, getting the C sewn in this close to the season would cost extra.

The dreaded sig of doom has chosen future hall of famer Jason Heyward as its target.

May the baseball gods have mercy on your soul!

I'm actually upset there is no "C" on the chest. I would have bought a snowcapped Wright jersey with the "C" on there. Love those versions.

Also it looks badass, IMO. David deserves the "C" to be on his person.

The only jersey I legitimately liked the "C" on was Barry Larkin's - namely because the C they used was the very same one that's used for Cincy's logo.

Always thought it was humorous to know that Franco was named captain, large in part because Turk Wendell went to a Devils game one year and asked why they don't have a captain - like in hockey.

Little irked me more than seeing that on Franco's jersey -- may as well have put "G.M." on it too.

I bet if you walk into one of the shops that does the jersey lettering, they will happily add the 'C' on it for you :)

Much like Keith Hernandez was, DW has been the defacto captain for quite awhile.

Still, this is well deserved and a long time coming. For a star player, he's put up with a lotta crap from the fanbase over the years (overhyped, not really a star, streaky, unclutch, too vanilla, etc) but I'm not sure you could pick a better guy for this role.

Rubin posted a nice piece this morning listing his favorite David Wright moments....it's a pretty good read.

Captain America is now the Captain for the metsies. Can't wait for opening day!

The truth of the matter is that you always know the right thing to do. The hard part is doing it.

LETS GO METS!

This is really much ado about nothing... I am just glad they did not put that C on his jersey. If they had it would have been embarrassing. This Captain is known for letting his ship sink in the second half... year in and year out.

Seriously? You know, I had typed out an entire post with stats about how ridiculous that assertion is, and decided it's not worth it.

And c'mon mulds, you're better than that. I expect that kind of nonsense Mets narrative crap from beat writers, not an educated fan such as yourself.

i am not so much speaking of Wrights performance as I am his inability as captain to rally the troops and not let his ship sink. I feel that is part of the duty as the captain + Wright spoke of this himself as captain he is going to make sure we don't slide in the 2nd-half. But, he has been captain all be it the unspoken captain and the ship has continued to sink.

Well, I'm not sure any captain can make up for a crappy supporting cast.....it just doesn't work that way. The fact is, the Mets just haven't been very good the last few years. And just because they've been able to overachieve early in the season isn't justification for laying the blame on Wright when the lack of talent and depth won out. noidea

I'd like to think mulder is more intelligent than that (and I do certainly think he is from what ive seen), but that's a statement i'd expect from someone on the WFAN caller/mets.com message boards, not on a good board like this.

I am just not a big fan of this captain thing... but again it is much ado about nothing since he will not be wearing an actual C. So basically nothing has changed really except for it now being in an official capacity. The Captain in baseball really has not been relevant for decades and decades. It came about when you had a player who would also manage the team back in prehistoric times. Now it really serves no purpose and is really only to show admiration/respect. The manager is still the true leader/captain IMO.

this I can agree with. I do think captains in baseball are completely overrated. Derek Jeter being "captain" didnt help one bit to save the yankees from the worst postseason collapse ever in 2004.

I dont know how he feels about it now that he's older, but though Keith was captain for that 1-2 year period, he was never crazy about the idea of a baseball team having an "Official Captain". He stated back in the day a few times that he just went along with it because he knew he was the on field leader and he was a key veteran (and he knew he was the unofficial captain since he had gotten there anyway)
