Bullpen Battles (w/Francisco Updates)

Bullpen Battles (w/Francisco Updates)

Mods, close this if you want but I thought maybe we can use this thread to discuss the battle for the one or two open spots in the bullpen.  There are possibly 7 or 8 candidates for those 1 or 2 spots.

Just read one of Rubin's tweets that Teufel says Brandon Hicks has such a strong arm he could be a pitcher.  Maybe we should add him to the battle for the bullpen? biggrin

Re: Bullpen Battles

CL - Parnell
SUM - Lyon
MR - Atchinson
MR - Burke
MR - Familia/Hawkins
LOOGY - Edgin
LOOGY - Feliciano/Laffey/Carson
LM - Hefner

I don't think it's a stretch to say this is the deepest group we've had in a while, but given the age of some of these guys, and the lack of an established closer, things could get ugly in a hurry.  The key is Parnell taking the closer's job and running with it.  Lyon and Atch should be productive when healthy.  Burke is an unknown, but at the same time very interesting.  We have more lefty depth than we've had in years.  Hefner is a capable long-man.

The potential is there for solid returns or abject failure.

Any idea how long FF is out? McHugh is probably in the mix as well. Byrdak is out until July, right?

Re: Bullpen Battles

Okay, here is the complete list of those who are not likely to start the season on the DL competing for bullpen spots.  The first list are the veterans and veteran non=roster invitees.  The second list are the youngsters on the 40-man roster and the non-roster invitees.

Veteran list
Bobby Parnell
Brandon Lyon
Aaron Laffey
Jeremy Haffner
Jeurys Familia
Josh Edgin
Robert Carson
Greg Burke
LaTroy Hawkins
Scott Atchinson
Carlos Torres
Scott Rice

Rookie list
Gonzalez Germen
Darrin Gorski
Collin McHugh
Elvin Ramirez
Hansel Robles
Cory Mazzoni
Rafael Montero

I just don't see any on the rookie list having any realistic chance of making the Opening Day roster, but it leaves 12 pitchers competing for 7 or 8 spots.  This does not include Frank Francisco, Pedro Feliciano, or Tim Byrdak.

Re: Bullpen Battles

There is no chance of Robles, Mazzoni, or Montero making it out of ST.  I would guess they are taking a look to see how they look against some big league hitters...maybe also to evaluate potential late season call ups for the BP.

Could see Hawkins having a step up on Familia heading in.  Maybe they can go Familia instead of Hefner too.  Atchinson and FF are also ticking time bombs right now, so I could see them starting with Hawkins/FF/Atchinson and storing Familia at AAA until one of those guys eventually hits the DL.  They could have the same approach with Feliciano/Carson...start with Feliciano until if/when he breaks down, then move on to Carson later in the season.

FF and Byrdak are both out rehabbing for a while but why are you including Pedro?  I can see him beating out Carson or any other #2 LRP if he still looks good.

Do we know if Pedro is back to 100%?  He may need some additional time to get ready and may start the season on rehab? noidea

That's exactly what they'll probably do (assuming none of the old guys look completely shot in ST). I think Familia, Mazzoni, and Leatherisch will all be with the big club by August.

1. Robles is here because he's on the 40-man roster.

2. Mazzoni and Montero are here because Warthen is best teacher of the splitter so they are benefit of his experience, He taught Pelfrey and Young a splitter. Then, there's Gee.

Maybe the better question is who on these lists will NOT see any major league action for the Mets at some point during 2013?

Did a great job of it, apparently.

Re: Bullpen Battles

How many of these non-roster invitees can be stockpiled in AAA in case we need them later...they did sign minor league contracts?
Do we know if any were promised a release if they didn't make the team?

Agreed on the bolded. Its unfair, but Parnell, for all his performance, has developed a narrative-driven reputation as lacking the head/stones to close. If he wobbles early, that's going to be the media story until someone strings some 'clean' saves together. I'd love for him to finally take ownership of the role.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Frank Francisco, who has been shut down from throwing since camp began because of inflammation in his surgically cleaned right elbow, is expected to be cleared for light baseball tossing in four or five days.

Francisco had a bone spur removed from the elbow in December. He was unable to rehab properly because of personal issues, Sandy Alderson said.

What?  Is his wife leaving him, did his dog die?  What is more important than ensuring you are 100% ready to earn the money a team invested in to you?  Or better yet what could be more important than ensuring you are ready looking to earn another contract after the season?  Can't wait for this clown to be gone.  Was hoping he would start off the season real strong so that he can be traded for an OF prospect but that is probably a long shot at best right now.

I seem to recall Alderson citing "a couple of deaths in the family" last week during one of his interviews.  Whatever it is, I wish his family the best -- however, I'm not a fan of his, even when 100% healthy.

On edit:

That is, Alderson said, because Francisco has not carried out an effective rehabilitation program since he underwent surgery to remove bone spurs from his right elbow. Alderson indicated Francisco has dealt with difficult personal issues, including deaths in his family, that diverted his attention over the past two months.

"I'm disappointed, but, unfortunately, this was not unexpected," Alderson said.

more or less what it looked like the past few years, only we may begin to see some of the future seep into the pix by the 2nd half... with guys like Leathersich, Mazzoni, & Montero getting their first cups of coffee.  Otherwise, I expect to see an opening pen of Parnell, Lyon, Atchison (if healthy), Hawkins, Edgin, Hefner and the 2nd lefty between Pedro F & Rice.
