John Buck: Mr. Intangibles

John Buck: Mr. Intangibles

As for Buck, I get the sense he is going to be more than a placeholder for Travis d’Arnaud; he has an idea of how he can help Harvey, Johan Santana and the rest of the pitching staff become better, and he intends to offer anything he can in order to make them more successful. That has a ton of value which doesn’t necessarily get that much attention. In a way, he presents a leadership quality the battery in general has lacked over the years – the Mets haven’t had a veteran, Major League catcher since Paul Lo Duda left, and I think the Mets have missed the kind of catching presence Buck could bring to the table.]

Evidently there was also a recent report of Buck bringing it to people's attention that Santana may have been tipping his pitches last season.  Good to have a vet like that working with Harvey and Wheeler, especially with Warthen as pitching coach.

Metsblog is the worst.  The Mets have had just about every veteran catcher in the book since Dookie left town.

I'm very excited that Thole is gone.  I couldn't stand watching him shy away from contact.

Lo Duca could also bake a pretty good cheesecake.

They said "veteran, Major League catcher." Mets have had veteran catchers. But not major league catchers. They've been more minor league or independent league quality catchers.

See where you're trying to go with it, and they may be semi-correct when they say veteran "major league" catcher.

However, is a Major League catcher today, one who hits .192, which is what Buck hit last season? (Until D'Arnaud's ready - Buck's our starter.)

Sounds like another PSL Sunshine story to me.  biggrin

He might be the perfect guy to have around for the next couple of years.  He can help with our young pitchers.  He may also help TDA learn to manage a staff.  Yeah, TDA can hit, but if he can't manage a staff it doesn't count for much.
Mets trade away reigning CY Young award winner.
Still have the best pitcher in Baseball.

Metsblog is quickly becoming a bit of a mouthpiece for the team itself.   I use Mets Today a lot more.

John Buck is a 2 month filler. He will be an afterthought come July.

Just grin and bear it until TD'A

Nothing wrong with building his value so that we can trade him for a secondary prospect in mid-season.

"Building his value" would come by popping out a bunch of HR's......rather than focusing on how he told Johan he was tipping his pitches, IMHO. Doubt many contenders will be looking to give up much for him during a stretch run.

More intangibles from Mr Buck- one of Brandon Lyon's reasons for signing with the Mets was a chance to play with childhood friend John Buck.  I love the Lyon signing so I've gotta give Buck some props here.

Is there any comp for the 2nd catching spot, or is that definitely going to Anthony Recker?
