I hope that K-rate from last year is for real...

Never been a fan. I don't think I'm gonna like the $ given. Hopefully it's under $3M per.

Lyon is pretty decent. Even if the K rate from last year isn't repeated he'd still be an upgrade over Rauch or Ramon Ramirez. Signing Lyon would qualify as actual trying for a change.

I now remember being shocked he got that $ at that time. He was coming off a 4.70 ERA, 59 IP, 75 H season. I'm now fearing we just gave him a $4-5M contract... Imagine if it's a multi-yr (FF) one?

RE: Heyman: Brandon Lyon close to deal with the Mets
If the deal is good $, it's intriguing. However, his era last year wasn't so great. The Mets are yet to sign someone intriguing that actually improves our roster without it being a low risk/potential high reward scenario (Marcum). We have alot of money available if we truly have a 100 mil payroll, and yet we are spending NOTHING Lyon is intriguing though. I would be much less pessimistic/nagging with this post if he was one of many additions as opposed to being one of the highlights..

Mets closing in on deal with Brandon LyonFebruary, 3, 2013Feb 3 5:11 PM ET By Adam Rubin | ESPNNewYork.com The Mets are closing in on a deal with right-handed reliever Brandon Lyon, a major league source told ESPNNewYork.com.
#31 RP Toronto Blue Jays2012 STATS Lyon, 33, went a combined 4-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 67 relief appearances last season with the Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays. He posted a career-high 26 saves in 2008 with the Arizona Diamondacks as well as 20 in 2010 with the Astros, but may not viewed as a candidate to unseat Frank Francisco as closer. The Mets clearly are displeased with Francisco, however. If players with past injuries prove durable and effective during spring training, the Opening Day bullpen could be: Francisco, Lyon, Bobby Parnell, Josh Edgin, Pedro Feliciano, Scott Atchison and LaTroy Hawkins. Presuming a healthy rotation as well, that means Jenrry Mejia and Jeurys Familia both could open the season at Triple-A Las Vegas, along with Robert Carson. Lyon would appear to warrant a major league contract, which would put the Mets' 40-man roster at a full 40. Because Feliciano, Atchison and Hawkins all signed minor league deals, and with an outfielder such as Andrew Brown or Marlon Byrd potentially needing to be added to the roster as well, the Mets could need to free as many as four 40-man roster spots by Opening Day. CBSSports.com first reported the Mets being close with Lyon.

hopefully this is not Sandy handing out a 2yr deal to a mediocre reliever for the third straight year.

They have been bringing into questionable guys for several years now, whether the guy is old, cheap, coming off of injury, or just not that good.

^Yeah, you're right dg it was. He made $4.25M in '09 and in '10 (looking at br.), I thought his contract originated from '09 w/ DET. It was a 3, yr $15M+ contract w/ HOU in '10.

I guess a 1 year deal @ $3 million or so would be OK.

It looks fishy in the sense that it came almost completely out of nowhere, but in terms of swing-strike % and his ability to generate more swings and misses outside of the zone, it's pretty legit. The question is, can he keep it going.

As I said, the pen still seems a late inning talent like Andrew Bailey away from being solid.

I'd say we already have a chance for a solid pen -- Lyon, Atchinson, FF, Parnell, Familia, Edgin, etc. -- and are a late inning talent away from potentially being pretty good. Pens don't have to be star-studded, they just have to be consistent. I don't think any of those guys guarantees us anything, but I do think the potential is there for the pen to be solid. It's definitely not inconceivable.

RE: Heyman: Brandon Lyon close to deal with the Mets
This would make 40 players on the 40 man roster. There's enough deadweight to drop someone if you can work out a deal for a Bourn type, but I wish we could find a 2-for-1 or 3-for-1 for an OF. Something + something for De Aza (or a guy like that).

He jumped early at Francisco (12/6/11) when he probably could have waited for a comparable/cheaper option later. This year he waited until February to sign a ML reliever, so I'm hoping his patience will be rewarded.

The question is, can he keep it going. I am referring to the likelihood that it was PED enhanced. His K/9 was 5.8 for his career coming into 2012 and then it hit 10.1 in 2012. How did that happen?
