Scott Atchison signed to a minor league deal
this normally wouldn't get it's own topic but relative to our pen this is huge. had a very good 2012 but had some elbow issues late in the season so I don't know what to think about that. (sidebar, I called for this early in winter. ) link

Mets Sign Scott Atchison (Minor League Deal)
Mets signed RHP Scott Atchison to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Atchison was non-tendered by the Red Sox in late November after he posted a quality 1.58 ERA and 36/9 K/BB ratio over 51 1/3 innings last season. The 36-year-old right-hander pitched through a torn ulnar collateral ligament late in the year, but he should have a good chance at winning a bullpen spot if he shows up to spring training healthy.

Arguably an upgrade over Rauch.

Pitched through it? Does that mean it has not been surgically repaired?

He opted not to have TJ Surgery. Not expecting much with this, but will hold out the hope that he provides something more than a look in ST.
Then again, it's not fun to have someone perform - only to blow their arm out at the start of the summer. We'll see what he brings to the table.

I don't get it. He won't last very long I imagine. Maybe he is intended to be used as long as possible to allow the Mets younger relievers to become more major league ready.

Seems like a nice minor league contract signing. The Mets are #1 at minor league contracts!

RE: Scott Atchison signed to a minor league deal
If he was a safe bet to be healthy he would have gotten a major league deal given his recent performance. Given that all he could get was a minor league contract it means we're taking a flyer on yet another guy coming back from injury trying to catch lightning in a bottle. We've alll heard the quote "hope is not a strategy";The Mets are trying to prove it wrong in 2013.

He's also 37 and without a lengthy ML history so combined with the elbow issue, he prob was never a strong candidate to get ML deal. Low risk signing tho. I'm down with this one.

As someone who had hope for similar signings in the past, your Kiko Calero's, Kelvim Escobar's, and Taylor Buchholzes' of the Met world - I'm not getting my hopes too high for this one.
Hopefully, he becomes a success story for Alderson.

I'm more than fine with it as a minor league deal. I just hope he isn't the only arm we add to the pen.

Yet another guy with good reverse splits over his career. And he was 18th in MLB last year in highest LOB for a reliever at 85.1%.

I love what Sandy is doing........collect as many bodies as possible with some kind of decent track record and see if you cna piece together a more dependable bullpen. Perfect strategy for a season where they aren't committing resources. If he can land a Valverde or Wilson......it would be job well done and let the results fall as they may.
Then he just needs to fix the OF.

Did he play in Topeka and Santa Fe?

Then he just needs to fix the OF. He should've done that last year... We'd have $6.5M more to play w/ now (FF). Rauch/FF/RR in '12: $12.2M... Reyes last year and this year: $10M per. #Just stating facts#
