Omar Quintanilla: Brought Back on Minor League Deal (ST Invite)

Rubin:
Infielder Omar Quintanilla, who performed well with the Mets during the first half of last season, is returning to the organization on a minor league deal with a spring-training invite, a baseball source told ESPNNewYork.com.

The Mets had traded Quintanilla to the Baltimore Orioles for cash last July 20. They regretted losing him, but needed to clear a roster spot for the return of Jason Bay from the disabled list. Mets officials traded Quintanilla at that point figuring they would lose him off waivers if they tried to pass him through waivers to send him to Triple-A.

Quintanilla, 31, hit a combined .243 with four homers and 16 RBIs in 169 at-bats for the Mets and Orioles in 2012.

Because he is on a minor league deal, Quintanilla may be an underdog against Brandon Hicks for a backup middle infield role out of spring training. Hicks was acquired from the Oakland Athletics on Nov. 26 for cash and is on the 40-man roster.

The Mets remain the lone team yet to sign a free agent to a major league deal this offseason.

He might be a good replacement for Ronny Cedeno who is going to be too expensive for the Mets.

But...the Mets are signing MLB caliber talent to these amazing minor league deals. Guys like Brian Bixler, Omar Quintanilla, etc. are going to be major pieces for the 2013 Mets!

I'm not sure how Q could be an underdog to Brandon Hicks.  someone clearly has some lofty expectations for Hicks.  noidea

Well, in fairness, Ronny Cedeno is a major leaguer.  You can't expect them to sign major leaguers.

I am happy he is back in the organization.  Omar played his arse off for us and it is nice to have him back.

I like bringing him back.  He's not a major league player, but he filled in admirably at short for 3 weeks whenever we had all sorts of injury issues.  That alone is worth a ST invite.

The dreaded sig of doom has chosen future hall of famer Jason Heyward as its target.

May the baseball gods have mercy on your soul!

He was a fine backup infielder in 2012, so there should be a role for him. Probably allows Jordany Valdespin to spend more time at AAA.
