Andres Torres: Returns To San Fran (1 yr, $2MM)

The San Francisco Giants are bringing back a familiar face, signing outfielder Andres Torres to a one-year deal, pending a physical, the team announced Thursday.

Torres, who played for the Giants from 2009-11 before being dealt to the New York Mets for Angel Pagan, was non-tendered by the Mets last month. The 34-year-old switch hitter batted .230 with three home runs and 35 RBIs in 434 plate appearances last season with New York.

Torres is expected to battled Gregor Blanco for playing time in left field and also serve as a pinch runner and backup outfielder.

His deal is reportedly for $2 million.

Torres had a career year during the Giants' 2010 world championship season, compiling a batting line of .258/.343/.479 while hitting 16 home runs and driving in 63 runs. After slumping in 2011, he was traded along with reliever Ramon Ramirez to the Mets for Pagan.

This is the city where the fans boo-ed Willie Mays when the team moved there. He was in his prime (27 years old) and only hit .347 that year. They obviously don't recognize a great centerfielder. I hope they're happy with both of them. They deserve them.

That $2mil is certainly based on what he did in 2010 for them and obviously not based on this past season for us.

They already have Gregor Blanco who is basically the same player except he's younger & better. Bonehead signing.

...when the Mets have 2 titles in 3 years I'll be more than happy to bring Torres back to Flushing...

Not even then. Well, maybe if he buys a ticket.
Mets trade away reigning CY Young award winner.
Still have the best pitcher in Baseball.

I'm not sure if they would boo their players nowadays. They seem to really love their team.

Mets fans, on the other hand...biggrin

Torres is never a good move for anyone.  I'd rather go with Captain Kirk, who is at least young, then go with Torres, who is not really good at anything.  His defense is overrated.

Torres will have a rebound season with SF while Kirk N. in CF hits .186/.230/.280 and 200 strikeouts.

We'll have posts pining for the days of Angel Pagan and even Andres Torres!
