Five things you want to see in 2013

Five things you want to see in 2013

So, we learned a bit about the team and it's direction this week. For all the noise around continuing to dismantle or cut costs, the push to resign Dickey and the pending long term commitment to DW, it is clear the organization has now entered the build it back up stage. By no means dies this mean the team is a 17 year old girl with daddy's crit card at the mall, but it does seem the club will add talent for the long haul in a risk/reward justified manner.

Having said that, what are the five points you feel will indicate all this suffering has been worth it and the team is ready to make a measured ascent to relevance? Here are mne:

1: the young guns develop and improve. Neise continues to be the stead3 type starter (not great but very good). Harvey start 30 games and continues to show progress (need to see his pitches per inning come down a bit). Want to see Wheeler make a mud-season debut.

2: need to see the minor league talent stay on schedule. I think Kirk was pushed last season and I would like to see him get another shot, but he will at best be a long term 4th OF. I want to see the likes of Nimmo and Puello move up levels this season. We will need that talent in a year or two.

3: the maturation if Tejada. I think he can be a darn good player. If his plate prescience can take the same steps forward this season as it did last we may have a fringe star player.

4: draft. Draft. Draft. Don't give away picks with high priced FAs and make solid picks wit high upside. No safe picks boys.

5: add short term contracts to plug holes. No deal over 3 years please. The opportunity to make a splash will be in a year or two and should coincide with more young players coming up to fill our roster in with a healthy mix of pre-arby players and long term core players. .

I agree with every word Nevets except for number 5 where I would make exceptions for certain players. For instance If we were to acquire a good hitter with 2-4 years experience I would strongly consider giving him a Niese type contract. If we could acquire an impact bat such as J Upton I would also consider a long term commitment. I think we are ok to start building for the long term with smart, sizeable investments.

As a 12-year old, when #1 happened, I expected #2-5 to be domino outcomes.

Looking at that list, I don't expect to see any one any time soon. flushed

I don't know that enough has really been done to make me forget about the past 6-7 years of suffering.  I like that the team has gotten its fiscal house in order and that the farm system is much improved.  The biggest thing for me would've been stepping up our efforts towards adding talent to the roster, both impact players and complimentary types.  Re-signing Wright and most likely Dickey ensures that won't happen.  So to answer that question, I'm happy with some of the things we've done, but I'm not sure it has been nearly enough to justify all the suffering.

Re: Five things you want to see in 2013

As for five developments in 2013 that I'd like to see happen to move the franchise forward:

1. Continued development from Harvey and Wheeler, arguably the two most important players in the organization.  If both prove to be frontline starters by 2014, the Mets will find themselves in contention sooner than later.

2. Ike Davis establishing himself as a core player.

3. Continued development from other key MiL arms, such as Familia, Mejia, Fulmer (especially), Tapia, Montero, etc.  Those players will eventually provide much needed pitching depth at the big league level, to both the rotation and bullpen.

4. The addition of one legit fringe core player who the Mets can count on for the next 2-3 seasons, either by FA signing or trade.  Doesn't have to be a star, but it has to be someone better than say Daniel Murphy or Ruben Tejada.

5. Wilmer Flores establishing his value to the point we can trade him for something of meaningful value at mid-season or next off-season.  I think his stock rebounded quite a bit last season, but taking another step forward from a power standpoint and dispelling concerns about his ability to stick at a position would go a long way towards elevating his value even higher.

#2 is huge. Ike being successful has to be a given for this team. Without him we really only have medium ceiling guys like Ruben and Murph as cheap regular position players.

I agree re #5. With Wright resigned Wilmer is 1B or trade bait. If #2 comes true then it's really just the latter. I say play him at 3B this year if that's his best position to maximize his trade value. 3B is always a thin position in the bigs and a big offensive season could push his trade value through the roof. Playing in Vegas might be just what we need to pad his stats and maximize his trade value!

Ike really needs to make the push to a 30+ HR guy to me with OBP and AVG. I am not ure if he is that consistently. I am afraid his value will not equal his contract demands and we have a sentimental over reach on a guy we think can complement David.

In other words, squarely on the fence with Ike as a cornerstone for this organization.

Not for Harvey to get hurt
Constancy (in a good way)
Outfield production
Better play from Thole
No quick fix moves

Re: Five things you want to see in 2013

1. Our bullpen to become a strength.  The Mets I grew up watching (-95 and on) would get outs from their pen until the bottom fell out in '07.

2. Our defense to become a strength.  Especially at catcher.  Thole, to me, is brutal to watch.  He's scared of contact.  The outfield (Duda) and infield (Murphy) need a revival of glove work, too.

3. Wright hitting at a premier level for an entire season.  It seems that David gets extremely hot for a stretch and then reverts to average starter levels.  That hot streak is usually so good that Wright's season stats look solid.  In his first season of the new contract (depends how you wanna look at it), I wanna see Wright be a tough out for the whole season.

4. Harvey be special.  This might be the most greedy of my 5 things, but I wanna see Matt Harvey clearly be a stud.  Especially considering R. A. Dickey might be on the way out.

5. A handful of minor league position players making big leaps.  I'm looking at you, Nimmo and Flores.  We need too many position players to only fill through free agency and trades.  We need some of our guys to show that they can hit major league pitching.

RE: Five things you want to see in 2013

1. Ike Davis to pick up where left of, and earn a Niese-type extension.
2. David Wright to have a very good year so that we're not second-guessing the extension before it even kicks in.
3. Zach Wheeler to improve his command and force his way into the rotation.
4. To have a breakthrough season from a "non-core" guy, such as Valdespin, Kirk N, or even MDD, to establish themselves as a long-term piece. We're due I'd think.
5. At the end of the season, through improvement of an internal guy, or a trade, to be able to identify someone in the organization as being a possible legit long term answer at catcher.
