Wonder if Jose Reyes enjoys Toronto ?

Wonder if Jose Reyes enjoys Toronto ?

LOL, I find it pretty ironic that Jose Reyes SS from the Miami Marlins is headed to the Toronto Blue Jays in one of the largest salary dumping's in baseball history. It teaches him right for leaving the NY Mets. Hope you enjoy the Toronto winter's Jose !

Go Mets...Cyborg

Re: Wonder if Jose Reyes enjoys Toronto ?

You are jose reyes...you spent the first part of your career in new york city, made a nice name for yourself and parlayed that into a contract that made you one of the wealthiest human beings on the planet, AND gave you easy access to the south beach lifestyle. You are turning 30 next year and are now being shipped to toronto.
In Miami you could be king.
In Toronto, you will be just another foreign player with the Canadian equivalent of a green card.
How do you think he feels?

Toronto and Tampa are the lone teams with the awful plastic field. When the Mets played Toronto this year it was awful watching those games with the plastic glare. The ball rolls like its on cement. At least in Tampa they created a dirt infield...I think Toronto still has those dirt cutouts around the bases ala 1980's Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Cincy.

It's an awful surface. I can't believe Reyes is anything but pissed off about this deal.

RE: Wonder if Jose Reyes enjoys Toronto ?

Yes, that turf can´t be good for his knees. He should hit a lot of triples though when healthy.
Best thing about this is that Josh Johnson is out of the NL East.
And I also suppose that the Mets again won´t finish in last place in the NL East in 2013, regardless of what they do this winter...

Teaches him right? First, it seems like the Mets didn't even make him an offer. What was he supposed to do, beg them to offer him a contract of 4/60? He took a chance, and I'm sure he's pissed now. What he might have done is lower his price a little and get a stable team involved, not the Marlins. Love to see what FAs go there now as long as Loria is there. Thus is like the 3rd time he's sold off.

That was my thought. This is not good for lengthening Jose's career, those fields won't be good for the legs.

Agree
His first choice was to remain a Met.  I feel sorry for him.
First, he had to admit they didn't want him for what he was worth...in spite of his batting title.
Then after taking the big bucks (Marlins idea, folks), he gets exiled to Canada.
The dream of every Carib. player who is lucky enough to be playing in Fl.
Through no fault of his own, all he ends up with is the big contract...another victim of the Wilpon mess.

Re: Wonder if Jose Reyes enjoys Toronto ?

What is it with some of you guys hate for Reyes?  The Mets didn't make any offer to him when he left.  What did you expect Reyes to do, play for peanuts?  You're telling me you wouldn't have done the same thing if you were in his shoes.  You're telling me you wouldn't get the most money you can while in your prime?  For what, the glory of playing for an overglorified AAAA team in the Mets.  If the Mets wanted him back bad enough, offer a contract that would have paid him what he was worth.  It's that simple.  Reyes owed the Mets nothing.  Stop acting like jilted lovers at the alter.  If you're mad, take your anger out on where it truly belongs, on Mets ownership.  They are the ones who thought it would be ok to let him walk with no compensation (don't give me that we got a 3rd round pick crap, that's like getting a nickel return for a dollar spent).  Reyes did what was best for Reyes.  It's not like he committed a major crime here.  I see no reason to hate the man.

As far as how he handles TO, I think he'll do fine as long as he stays healthy.  They should contend for the division and worst case, they are a wild card team.  They were solid before, this trade may put them over the hump.

Can we please stop with the fiction that the Mets never made Reyes an offer? They discussed the parameters of a deal with his agent...if the agent had said "sure, we'll take that", he'd be a Met now. He got an offer from Miami that was beyond those parameters so there was no reason to make a formal writen offer. Just because they didnt write it down doesnt mean an offer wasnt made. And repeating the same fiction over and over again doesnt make it true.

If Reyes and his agent werent smart enough to see giant, sparkling red flags when the Marlins insisted on no no-trade clause and a backloaded deal then shame on them. But the more likely scenario is this: THEY DIDNT CARE AS LONG AS THEY GOT THE MOST MONEY.

Re: Wonder if Jose Reyes enjoys Toronto ?

The Mets FO discussed the parameters of a Reyes deal that they knew was below market and that they couldn't possibly have thought Reyes would sign. They played for second place and that's what they ended up with. In my eyes it was merely a feeble attempt to save face with disgusted Mets fans. It worked with some of us and absolutely didn't with others. Count me among the latter group.

I've been having an existential crisis as a Mets fan for a very long time. Why do I continue to invest so much emotionally in a team that doesn't love me back? Why do I continue to invest in owners that I do not trust and who I don't believe have the financial wherewithal to build a team for the long haul? In that context, I woke up this morning with a bit of an epiphany:

Why not be a Blue Jays fan? Toronto is the closest major league city to where I live (2 hour drive away). They play in the same division as my two least favorite teams (Yanks and Sox) so I already root for them 30+ times per year. They have a great GM. They apparently have ownership that is willing and able to spend money. They have some interesting young players and they just added a couple of legit major league SPs and one of my all time favorite players (Reyes). In a rational world, it seems like sort of an obvious decision, doesn't it?

Amazing that anyone blames Jose Reyes for not being a Met when he wasn't even offered a reasonable, honest contract...

How can people continue to vilify a guy who was so obviously screwed by the team he gave everything to for a decade? It BAFFLES me...

At least I can root harder for him now without concern that he beats the Mets...

This is revisionist BS. Maybe your existential crisis has fogged over your memory, but for a good while into the free agency period, the big story on Reyes was the lack of interest in him. Its not like there were five or six teams in the bidding..it was pretty much the Mets and the Marlins, so the idea that the Mets INITIAL offer was below market is ridiculous, unless you define the market as "what one stupid team which will have to trade him a year later is willing to pay".

And btw...you want to question your Mets fandom, thats fine. But for the last couple of months you've been on this jag where anyone who is somewhat positive towards the Mets is fool who's being duped, unlike yourself, who is waaaay too smart to fall for any of that stuff. Please stop. Its insulting. If you have a difference of opinion, thats fine, but please stop referring to those of us who dont see every bit of news about the Mets as part of some evil secret plot by the Wilpons to fool us all as some kind of idiots.

Yes, except for the part about being a Fan is not rational to begin with!  I think we all go through these periods.  Lets begin with one of your ideas.  That being that current ownership doesn't have the financial ability to build a team for the long haul. I think that most of us like to rationalize this idea in a sort of romantic way.   We fantasize about someone from Wall Street swooping in and stealing the team from the Wilpon's.  It's a very romantic fantasy but it is not realistic.  We all know inherently that the Wilpon's, if not today, then sometime in the near future will have the financial capability to build a team for the long term.

We also know beyond a fact that Fred Wilpon is one of the biggest baseball fans in the world and fantasizes himself about how and when his team will win a World Series.  Many of us believe that when that day happens, Fred will retire.  We know that SA is a guy who has turned around bad situations and we knew that it wouldn't take just one or two seasons.

Being a fan of Toronto for you is about as easy as being a fan of your hated Yankees.  You know and we all know it's not going to happen.  Look how we were all drawn back in last season when the Met's outperformed expectations in the first half.  I go through this with my oldest son (19 years old) all the time.  I think we had a thread a few years ago about how each of us became a Met's fan.  The common thread is that for most, it wasn't a conscious effort.  We are all hooked so in my opinion, it is better to reach that realization and just deal with it.

I am a NY Giants fan as well and was very upset about the last loss.  But in perspective, The Giants have gone to two Super Bowls and Giants fans have nothing to be unhappy about.  But today, Giants fans are pulling their hair out (what's left of it) and talking about how Eli is done!  Its what fans do.

You can go try to be a Toronto fan and I applaud that effort.  But I don't believe for a moment that you won't be right back here at our game day thread the first time The Mets show any signs of life...

Ouch. I am entitled to be critical of the Mets ownership and FO and I have no intention to stop being critical as long as they continue to operate as they have in recent years. If I have ever been directly disrespectful to you I would be extremely surprised.

And your spin on Reyes is the revisionist version. Did you think Reyes would sign for 4 or 5 years at 15M per year? I never saw a credible source anywhere that said the Mets were willing to pay any more than that. Sandy and any objective observer knew that wasn't even close to what it was going to take. Besides its pretty easy to say "I would have paid X" when he's already signed with another team. I had been saying for a year that the Wilpons wouldn't pay Reyes what it was going to take to keep him and unfortunately I was right.

Re: Wonder if Jose Reyes enjoys Toronto ?

I do not know what spin anyone wants to put on the Reyes free agent negotiations.  The Mets made their best offer based on what they thought he was worth.  Look, everyone is complaining about the Bay and Santana contracts, who were previous two stars the Mets signed.  They simply didn't want another contract that would burden the team.  See how long the winner of the Reyes bidding wanted his contract.

RE: Wonder if Jose Reyes enjoys Toronto ?

It is, in fact, possible to be a Mets AND Blue Jays fan...for me, the Blue Jays just replace the Red Sox as my AL team to watch and root for...

The Mets had no intention of resigning Jose Reyes unless it was a situation where he came crawling back to the team with no external interest. They were not going to give him the contract he deserved.

He got a reasonable contract from the Marlins. He played up to that contract in his first year. Don't mistake the Marlins salary dump with this trade being a bad contract dump... the Reyes contract is not bad. If the Mets actually had the money, I'm positive they would have resigned him. Unfortunately, it came down to money. Right after it happened, Sandy said it had nothing to do with Madoff..he has since contradicted that statement and implied it was due to team financial issues.

So how can so many people vilify a player who wanted to remain a Met but wasn't able to because of the owners financial incompetence? How can they vilify a guy who sounded like he was genuinely hurt by the Mets lack of interest in press conferences following his signing with the Marlins?

I will truly never understand how the Mets fan base can turn their back on arguably the greatest homegrown position player in team history...
