He should make it like Little League and give every coach a trophy.  Nobody can complain then. bangheadbangheadbangheadbangheadbanghead

This was a tough one, really tough between Williams Field and Cactus Shadows. I might have gone with the Mingus coach. But they have what arguably may be their best defensive team in years talentwise.

Great poll question, Jason

T-  then the complaint would be about who did not get nominated and should have ;)  Jason should buy EVERY coach in the state a trophy!  maybe that'll take care of the whining?

Okay, here is a name to throw out there.  Gary Buer.  After back to back 1-9 seasons at Independence, he leads them to a region title.  As most know, while there is talent there, Indy is a tough place to win at and Coach Buer found a way to get it done this year beating undefeated Apollo last Friday night for the title.

I wasn't even talking about the nominated coaches!  I MEANT everyone, 'cause, you know that when someone wins an award every Tom, Dick and Harry comes out of the wordwork thinking their guy got the shaft.  Just like the 24/7 All State team...  Every school's guy is worthy, either because he did a great job going 3-7 with his Bad News Bears-type kids, they won a region title after School X held a grip on it for years, or his talented group of seniors finally came up big and they won after years of mediocrity.  Personally, I look at the guy who took a pile of junk and made it something special, like Vaughn.  The guy took a mediocre 5A program and turned them into a title contender in year ONE.  I think if he doesn't win it's a travesty.

Mt. Pointe. O'Connor has had a great season, but they've also benefited from a weak conference this year.

If you've got any real evidence against MP, step up.  Otherwise, shut up because you continue to embarrass yourself and CC.

Have to go wtih Norris Vaughn...Mountain Pointe had a rough year last year, and although there were some good returnees, Coach Vaughn has been able to step in and push all the right buttons, as he has done at Wickenburg, and I am sure in Georgia...

Re: Coach of the year

Good idea to pick one from each division.  It actually is different.  A 5A coach has to worry about different things.  In 5A a coach typically platoons and has a lot of good players to play scout team against including a starting defense.

In lower divisions it's common to have players play both ways, the way they prepare is different since a Scout team is usually made up of 2nd and 3rd stringers since starting defenders are on offense as starters, etc.

Managing through injuries, quality of competition.

This makes a lot of sense to have "by-division" picks.

Also, you could have "best playoff coach"... who makes the best moves, etc.

One coach you don't want to leave out is "Kelley Moore" of Mesa.  Has turned around a program without a single big name athlete.  Their losses have been very close to the best in 5A.  They could do some damage in playoffs with a big win.  They are a few plays away from being undefeated.

RE: Coach of the year

jrod should get it. he came in to one of the worst situations and has led them to a region championship. And no pun intended to the o'conner players, but its not like there the most gifted or talented group. its just an incredible job by jrod, and i hope they can do some damage in the playoffs.

Re: Coach of the year

I really respect the turnaround at MP and the job Vaughn has done, but it seems that their schedule was a little light this year as well. Looking at the power points breakdown, they have beaten only 3 teams with an above .500 record, and two of those stood at 5-4. Once again, I'm not taking anything away from their accomplishments as they have done an outstanding job. But  O"connor was about the worst situation in all of 4A/5A before Rodriguez stepped one foot on campus..... Some very good D-1 players that start @ Centennial would have been at O'connor..My vote goes to JRod...

I can't get over the job Coach Rod did at Sandra Day.  Region championship after 3 close loses to start the season, a playoff birth and a new winning attitude all in his 1st season.  I sure hope he get the recognition he deserves.

Re: Coach of the year

guys I enjoy the underdog as much as possible but the Mt. Point no matter how you slice it is just hands down Coach of the Year stuff. It does not take away from others.

Our azsports will do a coach of the year in all classifications but in Mt. Pt division it is hands down.

The others are doing great do not get me wrong.
