WOW!!!! So he is pulling a Goldstein so to speak. As much as I hate to say it as a coach the guy is a game changer and he will win!!! Definitely shocking!!! If anything it will be interesting.

Westwood has an IB program. I don't think too many of those kids are playing football though. Maybe they need to promote it better to super smart athletic kids at the middle schools in Mesa...

Re: John Sanders hired at North?

Might be the most shocking hire ever? A lot of people saw the Goldstein and Rattay hirings coming. This seems right out of left field. So many questions? If Sanders doesn't win at North does that tarnish his legacy? If he does win at North is he a genius? How is he going to do with weekly No Pass/No Play!? How will he do without the parent support at Saguaro? No more big time pre game meals at P.F. Changs. It will be compelling for sure. Another do all of us who have criticized PUHSD for not putting enough emphasis on athletics have to give them credit now? WIthout a doubt the guy is a proven winner. You don't win all those state championships by accident.

Re: John Sanders hired at North?

Goldwater is also an IB school. There are only 2 players that are in the program. I can't imagine North will be able to draw kids with IB unless they come in and then drop the program after a semester. Its a PUHSD school so they wont send the kids down the road. They want those state dollars.

I think they will be in great position after this block to be competitive if they are allowed to petition down.

While the news floating about does suggest he might be the guy, I don't think it's been announced yet.  Has there been any official announcements about this?

What makes him a "proven winner"??? He took over a program that Goldstein & Reardon layed the foundation for and won? Goldstien & Rattey (the 2 names you mentioned) have done it at multiple schools,  John has had only 1 head coaching position. He was a long time DC in the valley & those teams never amounted to much then (dont even think a team he coached on made it to the semi finals).

So I ask again what makes him a proven winner?

Why? Make your argument for him as a "proven winner" .

Come on (and I am no fan of his), it does not take much to defend that he is a proven winner and based on stuff of which you are likely already aware: 1st two seasons as head coach at Saguaro, back to back undefeated champ seasons, then I think a semi-final loss in 09', then wins it again back to back in 10' & 11' - went 53-5 as a head coach for them, and he was also the DC the year before he took over when they won it as well, I recall and didnt give up many points throughout season. That is just at Saguaro.

He coached for years before that including several college and pro stops, which suggests he must have been viewed as successful to be hired in such coveted positions, and he was also a marine, I read. Whether he is a surly old dude who pisses people off (not saying I know that to be true) or whether people agree with him laying down in the game at Chap in 2011  is irrelevant to him being a proven successful coach

Re: John Sanders hired at North?

YEs, 4 state championships as a Head Coach and 1 as a Coordinator make him a proven winner. This theory that someone that walks into a good program and wins should not get any credit is ridiculous. It's hard to win state every year. Well said Ducks!!!

So, he won a lot of rings, and he's grumpy. But is he coaching at North?

Sounds like you have inside info. The principal showed his hand, if it's not Sanders or Busken, the only two meeting the description by the principal, then he's got major egg on his face.
