Horizon
What is to come of Horizon now that they are in Division 1?
I think their new head coach better savor the season they just had, because now Horizon football is a deadend program. I don't see how they could ever be a contenter in Divsion 1. No wonder they petitioned to go back down to D2. Tell me if I'm wrong, but I don't ever see any non eastvalley schools (except Brophy) playing for a state championship.

Re: Horizon
Westview could definitely play for a state title, they get some special players there...running an offense that is difficult to prepare for gives them a definite shot. They just boat raced Pinnacle. They didnt just sneak by them, they ran all over the Pioneers, I defintely think they can compete. NEFbDad wrote: What is to come of Horizon now that they are in Division 1?

Re: Horizon
No, I don't think Horizon should quit playing football. I'm just stating that I thing there is a huge gap between the east valley teams and all the rest of D1. I feel for Horizon's situation. They will continue to be successful with 7 and 8 win seasons, but it's going to be real tough to get past round 1 of the playoffs and near impossible to get past round 2. I think Pinnacle is in the same boat. If you look Pinnacle's record on Maxpreps, they have beat very average teams throughout the year, had two 8 win regular seasons, but they got dismanteled in the playoffs (giving up 120 pts in 3 playoff games). Pinnacle and Horizon continue to put out really good athletes each year and they do their schools proud, but I feel bad for the posistion they find themselves in D1.
We'll see how Westview fares with Desert Ridge this week. Putting a beating on Pinnacle really doesn't prove much. If Westview can hold their own with DR, then I'll agree that they are in the mix with the east valley.

Re: Horizon
How can you say putting a beating on Pinnacle doesn't prove much?
Week 5 Scoreboard:
Pinnacle 38 Horizon 17
Would think there should be some respect for the school that put 380 yards of offense on the Huskies.

So what you're implying is that Pinnacle and Horizon are good barometers for whether a team is a state championship contender? I don't see it. Those two schools have decent programs and they do well against north valley teams. But my whole point is that you can't use teams like that to make predictions, not in D1 anyways. D2 and D3 have a lot more parity and any given year a different team can make a playoff run. Look at Desert Edge this year. But in D1 you are just trying to compare apples to oranges.

Re: Horizon
It is what it is.. The AIA bases all of the divisions on enrollment numbers. This is how it has been done for as long as I remember. There are roughly 40+ teams in each division and for the most part, many of those teams in each division won't have a chance on winning a state title. This has been the case for a long time. There is more to high school football than winning state titles. High school football is about community and developing people into young men and teaching these young men the right ways of life. I think Coach Shaffer and his staff have done a great job and will continue to do so. They will have their teams prepared next season. All of the PV schools do a good job in the above mentioned. I don't believe any of our teams should petition to move down. The challenges of playing better schools is what drives many coaches and programs. Good Luck to Horizon and all of the PV schools. They will represent our community well!

FairAndBalanced1 wrote: What I'm wondering is why the AIA knowing full well that the PUSD schools plus others would be petitioning down drew the D1 enrollment line above Chap, Cent & MdN sending them back to D2? You do realize that Marcos is much closer to being a D-3 school (in terms of enrollment) than they are to being a D-1 school? At this stage they have all of 19 kids more than D-3 semifinalist Queen Creek, and have three less students than Nogales. To "draw" the enrollment line at a point where it would encompass the three schools you mentioned in D-2 would be to eliminate D-2 altogether (considering that all of three schools placed in D-2 based on enrollment have smaller figures than Marcos; an eighty team D-1 with a 16-team playoff is a poor idea on many fronts).
