D3 Who will win each round

D3 Who will win each round

Will there be an upset?  Odds are there will be at least one, or one that comes close.  Which game is closest to an upset?

DEdge vs Shadow Ridge
Cactus vs Saguaro (not really upset, either way)
Williams Field vs Campo Verde
Liberty vs Paradise Valley
Sabino vs Nogales
Sahuarita vs Sunrise Mountain
Maricopa vs Thunderbird
Queen Creek vs Agua Fria

I'll go first.  The one upset, or the one closest to an upset, I pick Paradise Valley over Liberty.  Who do you think will be upset, or the one closest to being upset?

Sunrise Mountain over Sahuarita
Thunderbird over Maricopa

These are the 2 games that I think the lower seed wins. But it's the playoffs anything can happen.

Sagauro/Cactus game. I think Saguaro beats Cactus again. Tough seeding that the two teams from Championship game from last year meet in 1st Round.

I like PV over Liberty and Campo Verde over Williams Field. Both PV and Campo Verde have stronger coaching staffs.

There is no way Cactus is beating Saguaro. Cactus is just not that good this year. They are young. It was 27-0 at the end of the first quarter of the game played earlier this year. Saguaro completely shut down Cactus' offense all night long.

Sunrise Mountain or Thunderbird winning really wouldn't be a shocker. In my opinion, Sahuarita and Maracopa haven't had a win against a good team this year.

A Liberty upset could happen if Liberty doesn't take the game seriously. PV has a great offense like Liberty, but no defense at all. PV would have to match TD's all night. I don't see that happening, but the score was tied at halftime 24-24 when they played earlier this year until Liberty found a way to shut Finley down.

I know everyone will think this is crazy, but I think Shadow Ridge has a shot to beat DE. I watched that game earlier this year, and SR made some bad mistakes (fumbles) early in the game. As the game went on, they played DE tough. That score very well could have been 10-3 (DE) at halftime. If DE comes out and plays like they did against Buckeye (21-7), SR has a good chance.

RE: D3 Who will win each round

Nope, if you had a poll..even if you kept to only those that had some modicum of actual knowledge of the game and AZ football, NONE of those picks are upsets. Vegas would favor SM, Tbird, and Saguaro in ALL of those games. Although, the one that may be closest is the Maricopa/Tbird game. However, if all three are taken by the lower seed, it certainly is an argument against the new system.

I agree that Shadow Ridge has a shot. They did not have their star running back that week and also a few more key players. I think DE is in for a battle. They might be 1 and done.

Re: D3 Who will win each round

fun thread.
I think TBird will beat Maricopa and Sag will pummel Cactus.  Sag is just to good, but (sorry Villain) Desert Edge will beat Sag this year.  Their defense is really good.
I havent seen Sabino (except last year), so I could be way off with this, but I think the Scorpions will hoist it at the end.

Of course, we're talking 16-18 yr old young men and emotions and mistakes are huge.  Turnovers aside, this is how I think it breaks:
Desert Edge over SRidge
Sag over Cactus
WF over CV
Liberty over PV (I wouldnt be shocked to see Finley win in at the end)
Sabino over Nogales
Sunrise Mtn over Sahuarita (who??)
Tbird over Maricopa
QC over Agua Fria

Desert Edge over Sag
Liberty over WF
Sabino over Sunrise Mtn
QC over Tbird

DE over Liberty (I'm dying as I type this...)
QC over Sabino

DE over QC

Lol how do you figure that pv has a better coaching staff then liberty? Pv lost to liberty 65 to 30 in regular season. Im not knocking pv but how can you say their staff is better then liberty?

Because I know both staffs. I am not saying Liberty has a bad staff, I just think PV's staff is better. When you get to the playoffs, coaching has a larger impact.

RE: D3 Who will win each round

This turned out to be quite an interesting bracket. One of the favorites to win it all here is a 9 seed and I actually see the 2 semifinals taking place in the quarterfinals. Here is how I see the 1st round turning out:

#1 Desert Edge vs #16 Shadow Ridge
SR certainly has had a great year. I believe this is their first playoff appearance. Congrats! However, DE is just too much for them right now. I can't see SR putting up 30 on the DE defense and that is what it would take for them to have a chance. It will take an explosive offense to knock off the top seeded Scorpions.
DE 41 - SR 21

#8 Cactus vs #9 Saguaro
It is crazy to think that this is an 8-9 game. Few would disagree that Saguaro is the favorite to win here. Cactus keeps it closer than the regular season meeting, but not that much closer. Too many weapons on Saguaro's side.
Saguaro 49 - Cactus 24

#5 Williams Field vs #12 Campo Verde
WF has not looked very good lately even before QC  took them out behind the woodshed. Campo was in the game last time and this could be closer than many think.
WF 28 - Campo 24

#4 Liberty vs #13 Paradise Valley
Liberty has looked the part of contender most of the year except for the DE game. The only other times they were in trouble was in the first half against PV and Sunrise and the entire game in a dogfight with Greenway. As good as T-Rog is, he will be the  2nd best QB in this game behind Finley which gives PV a punchers chance. However, I like Liberty in a shootout but not sure if they can handle a physical team that will run it down their throat. Lucky for them, PV is not that kind of team. They may not see a team like that til the semis.
Liberty 49 - PV 38

#3 Sabino vs #14 Nogales
Cant say I know all that much about either, so this is all based on reputation, record and schedule. Sabino is much better in all 3. I know Sabino is good, but I am not sure how good. Nogales, on the other hand, hasn't proven a thing. 8 bad wins, 1 blowout loss to Salpointe and a somewhat competitive loss to Sahuarita who has had an even weaker schedule.
Sabino 45 - Nogales 7

#6 Sahuarita vs #11 Sunrise Mountain
Sunrise has more offense than Sahuarita has seen in the past 10 games combined. Sunrise's deficiencies on defense may keep this close for awhile.
Sunrise 44 - Sahuarita 31

#7 Maricopa vs #10 Thunderbird
The only time Maricopa has seen an offense or a RB close to what Thunderbird has was in an absolute butt kicking from Marcos De Niza. They have had a great year, but are not quite up to this level yet. Thunderbird has to be a heavy favorite on the road.
Thunderbird 41 - Maricopa 17

#2 Queen Creek vs #15 Agua Fria
This could be a mismatch. Agua Fria hasn't beat a good team, was beat by 40+ by both D3 playoff teams they faced and lost in a game that really wasn't close to a non playoff team. Queen Creek's overall schedule wasn't that tough either, but they have proved themselves in big wins over WF and Perry. QC is a smash mouth team that can run and stop the run.
QC 52 - AF 10

2nd round: I see the Saguaro vs DE winner going to the championship against the  QC vs Thunderbird winner. I think Liberty beats WF and Sabino squeaks by Sunrise before both lose in the semis.

Not sure with that Sunrise Mtn upset with their best player #88 Elroy Masters out for the season with a fractured ankle.

Gohsfootball is right. Masters is out for the playoffs. Although I have NO LUV for Sunrise, I feel terrible for Masters. He is a talented kid and was having a great Senior year. frown

Sunrise still has a lot of weapons on offense. Although the game will be close, I still feel SRM will pull it out unless Sahuarita can shut down Castro and their QB combo of Sneed/Touvell.

Did you watch the previous meeting of these two?  PV's defense is a liability.  Liberty beats them handily again.

Libertys top WR and top RB are now gone from that game maybe that takes away some of Roger's weapons. If Finley can keep Liberty off the field and match score for score could be interesting but I do think Liberty takes this.

Liberty's RB, Harms and their second leading receiver, Robinson have both been out for three weeks. Others already have stepped up in their place. Both of the kids that took over played well against Kellis and Cactus. I believe RB, #26 Masood had 117 yds rushing in the Cactus game. Liberty is loaded with receivers.

Why isn't anyone giving Cactus a chance? It's hard to beat someone twice in a seaon and Coach F is one of the best coaches in the state.

That's because Cactus doesn't have a chance! This is their 4th time playing Saguaro in the last 2 years and Sag has dominated the previous 3.

Word on the streets it Masters, WR #88 from Sunrise Mountain, has a fractured ankle and is out for the season. I feel bad for the kid. Hopefully he still gets a chance at the next level. SMHS might struggle against Suahrita because of it...
