vs. Westmont, first look at our Waves!!!

I am FAR too excited for this exhibition game. excited

Well, ok, maybe not far too excited... I think my excitement is understandable.  I'm so sad to not be in Malibu for this season, but will be watching/listening to every game possible.  By the way -- in case you haven't noticed, from the looks of the website, I think Wavecast video will be free tomorrow night.

I'm really looking forward to getting a look at our team.  It's only an exhibition, but I'm interested to see a) how big our bigs have gotten, b) how cohesive our team play is... and these may be a little bit more difficult to tell without seeing us against some stiffer competition, but c) how our point guard play looks (smart play, good passing, limited turnovers), and d) if we will have an inside/post scorer emerge.

btw - I am also really excited to FINALLY get to post the first game of the year thread.  The wait is almost over.

+1

I'm not sure where Lorne is physically, but I am really interested in our PG play and who can emerge.  And, the battle between Corbin, Shannon, and Agre as well.

Surprise in the starting line-up:

Mychel
Darby
Corbin
Keion
Josh Lowry**

The freshman is getting the start at point. Let's see how this goes! I'm wondering if that means Lorne is going to see more time at the 2 like Asbury mentioned pre-season, or if he's just seeing how things work out with Lowry starting? From what I read about Lowry (haven't seen him play at all), it seems like he's more of a glue type... I was imagining him as a Jarbo-esque type player.

Waves win the tip. Here we go!

Corbin is looking GREAT on D! Saw a nice offensive post move from him too earlier, he just wasn't able to finish. But he is just absolutely dominating them inside right now.

Tanner Kerry in the game for the first time.

Keion is showing signs that he's becoming a GREAT player. He's passing the ball very well, we have 12 points and Keion must have 4 assists already. He's getting where he wants on the floor, taking care of the ball, creating for his teammates, playing good defense. I've always been impressed with him athletically, but so far I'm very impressed with him as a player.

Good news, Pepperdine is winning.

Bad news, Pepperdine has scored only 28 points against a NAIA school, and is shooting 48%.   Got to do better if we are going to hang with the guys in WCC.

Westmont plays the Princeston-style which will keep the score down..

As of the 7:14 mark of the 2nd period (when the 'live' stats went 'dead')...

The good:  now shooting over 50% for the game, including over 70% from 3, lead extended to 20+ pts

The bad:  turnovers - 14, although the Waves have 15 assists.

RE: vs. Westmont, first look at our Waves!!!

I wrote a huge post at halftime, not sure what happened to it.

They're looking good. Up 22 now, 6 or 7 mins left I think. 16 turnovers is a problem. But they're shooting very well, especially from 3. Bigs are looking good this half. Mychel 21 pts, 6 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 5-6 from 3..... WOW.

Keion looks frustrated with himself. Only 4 points, was looking sharp in the first half, but has been turning the ball over (mostly out of frustration IMO). He'll be fine, everyone has rough nights. The freshman guards look good -- I like them.

RE: vs. Westmont, first look at our Waves!!!

Game. 75-48. Hey, hey, hey. The boys looked good. The 2-3 zone was stifling. The 3 point shooting was OUT OF CONTROL. 60% from the floor (72% in 2nd half), 10-14 from 3 (71%). Strong inside presence from Corbin, Darby, Dupre, and Kerry. The freshmen guards were solid. They played very steady for freshmen.

Mychel was out of control. He finished with the line I posted last time.
Darby, 12 and 8 boards.
Lowry, 0 turnovers at the point.
Willis did a great job getting into the paint and distributing the ball.
Suttle with 10 off the bench.
Keion had 6 turnovers. I'm going to chalk this up to first game of the year. He looked impressive early, picked up some fouls, seemed to get frustrated. I'm confident he'll come around, settle in. And I don't think this sort of thing will happen as time passes and he matures as a player. He did a good job creating for his teammates in the first half.

I'm optimistic after this game. Granted, it's an exhibition against an NAIA school. But our points were steady, and contributed solidly, took care of the ball, moved it around, created shots, played good D. Mychel looks poised for an absolute break out season. Our bigs are noticeably more physical, strong inside presence on D, and much more of a concerted effort to work the ball into the paint and get some post scoring. I was really impressed with Dupre particularly. He had some good moves inside, and also hit some 3's outside. He could be a really dangerous offensive weapon if he is able to be consistent. We're deep, versatile, athletic and quick, but also physical and aggressive. This has the potential to be a very dangerous team.

Pacific, Long Beach, CSSB, UCLA---it only gets harder from here.  The next 3 or 4 will tell a lot more about this team than tonight's win...I'm holding my breath.

Re: vs. Westmont, first look at our Waves!!!

I want to try and hold back on jumping to my own conclusions about individual players... Keion's distributing was a great sign but I was surprised by how often he got himself into trouble with overdribbling or overdoing it.  He obviously was frustrated, as was Lorne who I think is still working his way back into things.  They'll come around, as Fro touched on.  Myc and Darby looked real aggressive, but what I loved the most from our new PG's was not their penetrations and dishouts but the firey clapping and barked demands for tough D from themselves and their teammates.  Great to see two freshman PG's with so much push out of the gates.

Thought it was a great idea to feed the students beforehand in order to lure the fair-weather ones out to a blowout win like this one.  I was confused when I thought I heard the students chanting "USC".  Rest assured it was "KFC" for a new promotion where if we score 75 you get a KFC coupon out of the door.  Sure enough our guys hucked up 3's and made 'em to help the fans out.  We can't say the Athletic Dept. isn't trying, on that end.

Thanks for the posts, missed the game and the video feed:(  Hope to make next week's game.  Great to have the season underway! Sounds like all the play time our guys got last year is going to be a plus we can count on this season. Bottom line...good coaching, good recruiting!

GO WAVES!!!

Re: vs. Westmont, first look at our Waves!!!

I was at the game, in the middle of the student section, and was quite surprised to see the place packed for an exhibition. Before I mention anything about the game, I was QUITE excited for the KFC we were entitled to as evidenced by the loud cheering at the 75th point, but VERY disappointed its just for one single, solitary piece of chicken. I mean really?

Let me just say Lorne looked terrible. I'm sure there were a thousand reasons why, but by the end of the game he was buried on the bench. It said something that he already lost a starting spot to a freshman...in preseason... but his play did not help his cause at all. The turnovers, poor decision making, and lack of creation were all disappointing. He didn't contribute much of anything playing off the ball, too.

Keion reminded us once again why he led the WCC in turnovers. Lots of it was pretty disheartening. Just some poor decisions on a bunch of possessions. That being said, he fed the ball well to his teammates and had he spent more time on the court as I suspect he will during the season, he would have scored more.

Mychal had an all around fantastic game, the type we were waiting all last year for. If he can keep it up against D1 opponents, he has the opportunity to shine. Darby also looked fantastic around the boards and Moore looked vastly improved.

I was most impressed with our freshmen point guards. They came out of the gate ready to play and didn't make any boneheaded mistakes that stood out in my mind. This will only serve to limit Lorne's minutes. Even Tanner Kerry looked good in the frontcourt and I would expect him to be more of an option for Asbury than Andy Shannon who, while bigger, doesn't look any better. We'll see.

The most exciting part once again was the students in the crowd. Lots of excitement for an exhibition game... probably 10x more students than our home game against Portland last year (in which the most excitement in the crowd was a razzing of Andy Shannon). If we can translate that to our games, there could be some exciting times in our high school gym.

Re: vs. Westmont, first look at our Waves!!!

Excuse me, didn't Lorne make 2 threes? I think judgement should start a least with the next game. This was justifiable a warm up. Pepp will need all to play well whether starting or off the bench.  I'm sure the best of the players will come out . Dane made 2 threes too if I recall.

RE: vs. Westmont, first look at our Waves!!!

Lorne is coming off an ACL injury... that's no small thing. We need to give him a break until he's back up to physical condition. He hit 2 threes, yes. But I understand what NEWave is saying, he was pretty sloppy with the ball, not something you wanna see from him. But we've gotta give him some time before we expect him to be 100%. I think his injury and not being full-speed likely has more to do with him "losing his starting spot to a freshman" than anything else.

Willis

I wouldn't necessarily take last Friday's exhibition lineup as this Friday's regular season lineup. It may be, but maybe not. I thought he gave all three points a chance to show what they could do.

I personally liked Willis.  He is very solid (in more ways than one)!biggrin  He also has a magnetic personality which can be related to leadership skills. A team and perhaps a student body can unite around a guy like that.  Time will tell.
