Mailbag/ Questions

Please submit any questions or requests for stories. It is not easy sometimes deciding what to write about. We want to give the readers what they want. Also if we don't have the answer we can find it.
Thanks

Re: Mailbag/ Questions

Maybe surprises from camp, true freshmen who are going to play this year.  LaJuan Hunt, Damoun Patterson,  Ian Togiai, Chase Christianson, Daniel Stewart, Jalen Davis, and Jontrell Rocquemore, are any of these guys too good to redshirt?

What's the story with Jentz  Painter and Anthony Williams, are these guys going to play? are they scholarship players or walkons?  What was thier recruiting like, did we beat out other schools for these guys? How did they end up here?

I can answer some of that for you right now. I actually just talked to Coach Wells about Jalen Davis yesterday. He will definitely play this year and may start over Danny Gray. Jalen has been a huge surprise this August.

RB LaJuan Hunt will also play this year. As it sits right now Hunt is in a battle with Kennedy Williams for the 3rd team back. He is also very much in the mix for kick returning duties. The biggest factor right now that is separating Hunt from Williams and fellow freshman Justen Hervey has been his ability to provide some pass protection.

WR Damoun Patterson has not had as highlight filled a training camp as he did during spring ball. In fact WR Zach Van Leeuwen has been more involved offensively than Patterson. I would say that Patterson and Van Leeuwen are going to be final week decisions when it comes to being redshirted or not.

ILB Chase Christiansen and OLB Ian Togiai are also very close when it comes to earning playing time. I get the feeling that in a perfect world the coaches would like to redshirt both. Right now with the injury to Alex Huerta there is a bit of a scramble to see if a redshirt could be preserved for Togiai by moving both Torrey Green and Mike Okonkwo over to the OLB spot opposite Kyler Fackrell. If Green can fill the void left by Huerta adequately then I would look for Togiai to redshirt. ILB Chase Christiansen seemed like a shoo-in to play during spring ball, however LT Filiaga has stepped up and provided some solid depth behind Nick Vigil and in a worst case scenario depth chart wise, "Little Vigil" could slide over to OLB and Filiaga could play ILB. As I said right now it looks as if both players will be able to redshirt but if I had to choose one of the two that would play in 2014, it would be Chase Christiansen.

CB Daniel Stewart while he has looked promising at times will redshirt. He has several JC transfers seeing more reps than he is right now and with the emergence of fellow freshman Jalen Davis and returning players Rashard Stewart and Danny Gray, there is simply no need for Daniel Stewart to play in 2014.

If I had to bet money, I would say that FS Jontrell Rocquemore will play this year. He has been running with the 2nd team defense for the majority of camp and he looks like he is grasping Coach Orlando's defensive philosophy. Rocquemore has build and length that I would compare to former Aggie Johndale Carty when Carty first arrived on campus.

As far as CB Jentz Painter and OLB Anthony Williams is concerned, I think that both are a lock to play in 2014. Williams has been solid as Kyler Fackrells back-up, and Painter is finding his way amongst the new players in the secondary. I think Painters niche may be on special teams, as he is one of the fastest players on the team. Think of him as an Adrian Bybee type player from a few years ago, only much more athletic. I know that Painter is currently a walk-on, who should earn a scholarship next year. I will have to find out about Williams.

On a side note Rashard Stewart is having a camp very reminiscent of the stellar camp that Nevin Lawson had last August. He has been a very lock down guy the past three weeks. I think that Stewart is gearing up to have the same kind of season in 2014 that Lawson had for the Aggies in 2013. Stewart has the potential, let's see if he can put it all together.

Great questions! Thank you Borag. Keep them coming.

Re: Mailbag/ Questions

Anyone else excited for the Scrimmage? I am actually excited to see some special teams and depth chart.

Also tonight we are recording the AggieUp podcast. Guests will include Chad Artist, Kareem Coles and Doug Kimmel.

Any questions we need to ask them?
