Re: 2013 & 2014 Schedules

The key is going to be filling games in October and November when most schools are committed to conference games.  I suspect the games against New Mexico State will be during that time frame, but who else will be available?

Re: 2013 & 2014 Schedules

Since we can play one FCS school and count it towards the 5 home games requirement per year, I hope that we can negotiate, as part of joining the big sky in Olympic sports, a home-and-home series with Montana and another Big Sky school (Portland St. or Sac. St. would be my preference) to be played in late October or November.  I don't really like the idea of going to an FCS school, but to get a couple of late season games locked down it will be well worth it.

The problem is that I think they want us to fail as an indy so we have to join the Big Sky in football.  Thus they don't have much incentive to help us.

True...that's why we should negotiate it as part of joining for Olympic sports.

I hope we can but  I'm not sure we have another good option for Oly sports so may not have much leverage  in negotiating.

I don't know about that.  One could also argue that rekindling the Montana rivalries would bring us closer to the Big Sky.

1 FCS game will be easy to get. Allowing a neutral "home" game can work to our advantage if we can find a site that a team really wants to play (aka Oregon State in Seattle. They are dying to play in Seattle so the C-Link could be a really desirable option for them). That leaves 1 home game to find. Now if they do allow us to do Home and Home with NMSU in the same year that could be huge in filling our schedule.

Oregon State is NOT, repeat NOT playing Idaho in Seattle. They're already playing WSU in Seattle every other year. Their alumni base is primarily in Oregon. They will never, ever, ever play Idaho in Seattle. Their alums travel from mostly Portland to games in Corvallis. That proposal would go over poorly at OSU. I went to grad school at OSU, never, ever will happen. Stop these fantasies.

Idaho 2013 schedule update: Spear says Idaho has 4 known games + 2 pending UI signature + 2 pending opp sig + 2 w/NMSU + 2 more linked

My own thought: I think the "linked" games probably involve us taking another schools money game (body-bag) in exchange for a home game...basically picking up a BCS money game and mid-major home game.

What about getting a game(s) with Army, Navy, or Air Force?   Could play Army and/or Navy over in Seattle at the Clink.  Fort Lewis is in Tacoma.  Naval base in Bremerton.  Play Air Force in Spokane.  Fairchild AFB right outside of Spokane.  Just a thought.
It's 106 miles to Chicago.  We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark out, and we're wearing sunglasses.  Hit it.

Re: 2013 & 2014 Schedules

That makes too much sense. As one donk pointed out earlier, AF only has 1 or 2 openings a year after the CINC Cup, which may be tough. But there are 4 bases within an day's drive of Moscow and Salt Lake and Denver has direct flights to Spokane and (probably) Lewiston which adds a few more to the list. That is a unique situation that not many places can claim. Navy in Seattle is probably more likely.

At the moment, neither appears to have an opening.  Also, if Army or Navy are going to travel cross-country, it likely will be to play a bigger name team with a full stadium.  Navy has (or is) made trips out west to play at San Diego State and Hawaii recently, for obvious reasons, and will play SJS in the Bay Area soon.  Army typically only plays once a year, if that, west of the Mississippi except for their required game every other year at AFA.  2013 it’s at Hawaii, and 2014 it’s at Stanford.

Air Force is different situation.  They have eight conference games plus two required against Army and Navy, leaving few openings.  They usually save at least one of those for a big-name, inter-sectional contest.

Re: 2013 & 2014 Schedules

for those who don't know (not trying to make any kind of prediction or statement of any kind.....this is just history according to the Media Guide):
Idaho was independent from 1959 (Pacific Coast Conference in 1958) until 1964 ('65 we went to the Big Sky). Let's look at the home games in those years (not counting games played in Boise....as I don't see that happening in the near future)
1959 - Oregon and Montana in Moscow
1960 - Oregon State and Washington State in Moscow
1961 - San Jose State and Pacific in Moscow
1962 - Idaho State, Oregon State, and Washington State in Moscow
1963 - Fresno State, Pacific, and San Jose State in Moscow
1964 - Oregon and Washington State in Moscow

so if my calculations are correct, according to history, we can expect to have at least 2.33 home games in Moscow as independents........
based on history anyway.........

Didn't they also have a shorter season back then?  Like 8 games per year?

10 Games.

You also have to remember the conference Idaho had been in (forerunner to today's Pac-12) also booted WSU, Oregon and OSU so they were playing as independents then as well.  WSU joined the "new" Pacific Coast Conference in 1962 or so, and the Oregon schools in about 1964, when it was rechristened the Pacific 8 Conference.

Now that UI is doing what I thought they would , (too bad), how about a schedule with six games per year with NMSU??  Three home and three away?   probably not an original idea but a solution to a big mess.

Now that would be a very interesting idea. I wonder who they would be if that assumption is correct. They'd have to be big enough to handle missing out on ~800k, yet small enough to need a body bag game I guess??? Seems like an odd trade, I wonder if we would have to sweeten the pot with something else. I know USU did a home and home with USC, where USC's basketball team played the home game in Logan instead of the football team. I also wouldn't be surprised if we are approaching teams with more long term deals like a home game for next year and one or two return games several years out.

Re: 2013 & 2014 Schedules

Hopefully the NCAA does not have a rule on game count if you play a team on the regular schedule twice?  NMSU-Idaho  ---- this is one way to get another game, but frankly it looks a bit bush, IMO.  I see the strategy in it, but be prepared for a run through the gauntlet of jokes.

I think the Independent schedule will end up pretty solid in appeal and fan support.  Creative is the key.

Re: 2013 & 2014 Schedules

At least for next year to get an idea of how it will look. Since its the schedule that is most needed to get done ASAP. I added games against FCS and NMSU games, along with 2 bye weeks since those are near guaranteed I would believe and are most likely to happen which they are in parenthesis.

2013 tentative schedule

08/31- @Ole Miss
09/07- @Wyoming
09/14- Northern Illinois
09/21- @Washington St
09/28- (bye week)
10/05- (FCS Game)
10/12- (NMSU)
10/19- ??
10/26- ??
11/02- (@NMSU)
11/09- ??(bye week)
11/16- ??
11/23- ??
11/30- ??

So it looks like at least for next year with a near guaranteed tentative schedule there will be likely 5-6 more openings to fill. Depending on factors like more than one FCS game, more money games, 2 bye weeks instead of one, etc.

I think in a years time its more than possible that the 6 open weeks that we know nothing about who would fill the spots will end up being filled come next season.

shoich808 --- nice effort.  Thanks.  I think you are probably close to the real plan.  I added mine in red.  I think we will have 2, maybe 3, FCS (a deal with Fullerton and the BSC schools).  I am hoping a waiver by the NCAA that we can have home games that may not equal the prescribed number of FBS.  Again, I really think we have two FCS and those two will be Big Sky programs.  Doug knows, or feels close to swallowing us, so we not accommodate us for 24 months??

Interesting.

But, the Beavs would much rather play Idaho in Pullman, where they face the Cougs every other year (well, almost every other year)?  Seems like a pretty short drive for OSU fans to hustle on up I-5 to Seattle twice to watch their team play UW and UI.

Hmmm....

Do you think OSU would like to play the Cougs and Vandals in back-to-back weekends in Pullman (assuming Idaho rented Martin Stadium as you've suggested), or would they like to go three years in a row traveling to Pullman (Wazzu - Idaho - Wazzu)?

this is what is so far confirmed for 2014 also. Only N. Illinois being TBA for date. The ones in parenthesis are games that are definite or bye weeks(2 instead of 1) that could be done. I bolded games that would be home games in bold. While the dates in parenthesis are not secure, its nearly 100% positive the games will happen I would think.

09/13- Western Michigan

It seems like you guys have only 5-6 games that is still at this point, not announced at all. I added the FCS because its likely to have at least filled with one.

Re: 2013 & 2014 Schedules

Here in the Carolinas, we have a situation is a Division II conference, the South Atlantic Conference, where one university, North Greenville University, is an associate member which means they play the other SAC teams every year in football but the games do not count as conference wins or losses for the official SAC schools. Good thing, as NGU went 7-1 last year against those teams, including defeating SAC champion Mars Hill in the D2 quarterfinals.

Has your AD even at least talked to the MWC about this route at all? Seems feasible. Good luck. I am a fan of all levels and conferences of college football and I hate to see what has happened to the WAC and the predicament it has left your university in. Godspeed!

Re: 2013 & 2014 Schedules

Those mid-week games are almost always with other conference members.  That allows the conference to build conference schedules that allow that.  As an Indy I think scheduling mid-week games would be a bigger challenge.  And, if we did get a mid-week home game our attendance would be really embarrassing.
