Idaho v Boise Rivalry

Idaho v Boise Rivalry

B.J. Rains @ BJRains 17h

Idaho AD Rob Spear on renewing football rivalry with Boise State: "I have not talked to Mark Coyle, but we're ready and willing."

So nothing new on that front...  Looks like 2019-20 would be the soonest we could get a series together, assuming neither of us wanted to adjust our OOC schedules.  Really want to see that rivalry game renewed.

Re: Idaho v Boise Rivalry

Lets just get our chit together as a program first. biggrin
I want to see that game played as much as any silver and gold Vandal, but we need to get serious about football again first.  Our president and administration need to pay some real attention to it in order to make it a competitive FBS program.  I think we are moving in the right direction, but there are few humps we have never been able to get over.  Sorry for menioning it, but facilities is a big one.

When we play BSU again, it needs to be a home and home arrangement.  If not, there are a lot of great teams in the NW we can go play and get a paycheck.

Listened to the interview with Spear yesterday but not a whole lot of new information about anything.  Went over conference situation, big 5 breaking away, BSU game, etc.  Spear said that if football had moved down to Big Sky then at least 2 other sports would have had to have been dropped along with it.

didn't see the interview, but RS needs to do more of this type of speaking to Vandal Nation.  A decision has been made to stay FBS (thank god).  Now he needs to rally the remaining vandal fans and alumni that still seem to want to go backwards to FCS football.
He needs to up his communication outlets and let everyone from students, alumni and people like Doug Fullerton know that Idaho football is FBS and is going to succeed there...., just stay tuned......

No, we need to win on the field and prove that we belong in FBS.  A winning team would solve much of the public relations problems that we currently face.

You both stated the two key ingredients that must be done in a loud, consistent and convincing tone.

Re: Idaho v Boise Rivalry

Well, let’s look at both the stated and unstated reasons why BSU won’t play us:

Stated:

--The Dome isn’t a worthy venue

--Animosity between fan bases

--Lack of competitive games

Unstated:

--They left the rivalry on top and under their own terms

--Sense of athletic dominance

--Spite

Even if we could fix the stated reasons, the unstated reasons will keep this rivalry from voluntarily resuming.  We could build a new outdoor stadium and be averaging 10 wins a season and that would simply motivate them to not play us for a whole different set of reasons.

The only thing that will result in us having a home and home series with Boise State is if we find ourselves in the same conference with them.

Agreed.  RS needs to state intentions clearly that football is not going back to FCS.  But the winning part is more important.  If we beat FBS teams there won't be any need to talk about it at all.   You didn't hear anybody debating whether we belonged in FBS during 1998 or 2009

Wouldn't public sentiment be against them if our end was taken care of ?
Hard to justify not playing a winning rival with an expanded or new stadium.
A couple losing season from BSU would also change the situation.

As much as I, personally, loved the rivalry. I'm afraid the die has been cast. Sadly, the rivalry game is a dead issue.ohlord SAD !

If Petrino makes progress and coach-pee-two is less than spectacular, then let's play one asap.  Play it in Boise.  We will find out where we stand and all can gauge the interest on both sides, then consider the long term.

I agree --- and, although I like Harsin, I do believe he will struggle to meet that 9 plus WIN bar by the idiots.  I see him at 7 wins and again, the conference title being elusive for out right grabbing or sharing.  Petrino and team may show gains.....and Rome has a good formula for looking at this home and home.  Idaho State is on the bronc schedule, come on!  UI --- BSU is good for the state and the merchants.
.FBS football or no football.  Do the math.  Go Vandals!

Re: Idaho v Boise Rivalry

Do all Broncos not see the benefit of the rivalry game?  If many of them do see the benefit and enjoyed it maybe we can band together and start some sort of meaningless petition for the rivalry to resume.  Of course, their fans would have to be involved as well but if both sides can work together and get this thing going again that would be great for the state of Idaho.  I know rivals working together is silly but if we want it to be resumed the masses will have to show that it is needed.

Probably dumb but just a thought.  Maybe someone could start a poll on their board and see what the most extreme fans think.

GO VANDALS!!

LET THE BEST RIVALRY RESUME!!!

Re: Idaho v Boise Rivalry

Why not approach BSU with some kind of deal such as, in 2015, or when ever the next open date is, Idaho will travel to Bronco stadium for $x amount. In addition, there is an agreement in place that if Idaho wins, we sign a home and home for 4 years.  If we lose, we agree to play in Bronco Stadium for 2 years.  Its a good deal for both schools.  We get an easy inexpensive travel game, probably decent money and our Boise Alumni get to watch a local game.  BSU gets a guaranteed sell out, more than likely a win, and assuming they win, a guaranteed sell out home game for two more years.  I also think this type of agreement would generate some additional publicity, and further interest in the game.

Re: Idaho v Boise Rivalry

In my dreams, I've thought a possible solution would be a multi-year agreement which would award the winner with the right to host the following year's game. Obviously, we would have to significantly pick up the pace before such a contest(s) would be truly competitive, but IMO both programs would have something both tangible and abstract to play for.

Just a pipe dream, but IMO such an offer would also unmask some of Huckster's self-serving duplicities.
