Re: Our interview with Rob Spear about hiring Paul Petrino
Given UI's financial situation - that we remain the BEST academic value in the west and among the top 5 in the country (and the state underfunds us relative to return on investment) - we cannot always offer the best salary. That means, it is not uncommon - across the entire campus - that we cannot hire our favorite candidate for a specific position. Rob Spear says he was able to do that with Petrino - that he was our top choice. For that, Spear and President Nellis deserve a strong congratulations. Very nice job gentlemen. Not doubting this, but I have had this conversation before and had a hard time documenting it.
Would you show me your information that affirms us as being " the BEST academic value in the west and among the top 5 in the country".

There are a lot of rankings, for example, here is Newsweek's: We place third in the country. vandal32 wrote: Given UI's financial situation - that we remain the BEST academic value in the west and among the top 5 in the country (and the state underfunds us relative to return on investment) - we cannot always offer the best salary.

Except that with the deterioration of WUE over the last two years I would have to question that value for out-of-state students. TammyDog wrote: There are a lot of rankings, for example, here is Newsweek's: We place third in the country.

Huey32 wrote: Not like Spear would say he wasn't the first choice! True, but Petrino was a pretty dang good hire considering our situation. He is head and shoulders above Tormey, Lingren, Walsh, and the other candidates we heard about. If you look at some of the factors Spear was dealing with, this was really a home run hire: (lack of) conference situation salary we were offering facilities issues administration that doesn't support athletics SBOE that is straight-up biased against UI horrendous record over the past dozen seasons etc., etc......

Did you talk off the record about Choate by chance? I would have LOVED to hear what he thought about Choate's comments and then him applying for our HC position.

I know and I was going to say that, but I didn't want to get called anti-Spear again. Huey32 wrote: Not like Spear would say he wasn't the first choice!

etc., etc...... The big thing Petrino had over the other candidates is a more national presence. As Spear pointed out in the article, the contacts CPP has are priceless. It was this in addition to his local ties and his knowledge of THE UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO that sealed the deal for Spear.

Re: Our interview with Rob Spear about hiring Paul Petrino
Yes the WUE has deteriorated but we are still thriving. Our Discover Idaho scholarship is geared exclusive at out of state students and can be a nice little award package depending on the student's academic performance. Better yet, our out of state numbers are up, WITH a diminished WUE. UI is thriving.

Re: Our interview with Rob Spear about hiring Paul Petrino
What happened to WUE? That program brought both my little sister and I to UI from Oregon. With WUE it was actually cheaper tuition for us to go to Idaho as non-resisdents than to Oregon State as residents. Huey32 wrote: Not like Spear would say he wasn't the first choice! Spear's comments were certainly his own endorsement of Petrino and the hire. I also got the impression that Rob's responses to the early questions could be read as a punch list of what he thought Akey couldn't do for the program: ROB SPEAR said about Petrino: The number one thing that came across is: -his toughness as an individual -his business-like approach to running a football program the way a football program should be run -his ability to teach and coach his coaches -discipline: Communicating clear expectations, accountability, the importance of identifying and addressing issues early, and emphasizing how this all starts with recruiting -his proven ability to recruit, and sell a program, and really build a program that we are going to be proud of If all the above turns out to be true about Petrino and he proves to be a great hire, then Spear has to be given credit for finding what Idaho needs in a coach. Maybe Spear has been a work in progress as AD and is just now figuring out how to really build a program that we are going to be proud of.
****************************** Take it from Skip Stahley, who serves as athletic director and head football coach of Idaho, "Oregon, Oregon State and Washington State are suckers to get tied up in the reformation of the PCC".

Re: Our interview with Rob Spear about hiring Paul Petrino
+100 I would like add that RS has been appointed to NCAA committee's giving him the opportunity to network and learn from other AD's from throughout the country. I think the networking contributed to his being able to pull together an independent schedule. Meanwhile, I think it is a positive that he has been collaborating with the economics department and local chamber of commerce to quantify how a strong athletic program contributes to the local economy. I think that study might play a role in building local support for the event center and expansion of the dome. (I might be to much of an optimist...however, it does help create a vision of what's possible for the local businesses.) Rome455 wrote:

I got the same impression from reading some of RS's responses in the interview... RS: “You can go out and talk all you want, but if you can't perform, and coach your coaches, and recruit right, and put a competitive football program on the field, those other things don't matter.” RS: “It's mostly based on the kind of program that I expect him to run. Like I said before, if we perform well on the football field, all those other things will take care of themselves. He will not make excuses and will walk the talk.”

Being from Missouri, those things are easy to say in an interview, just like RS saying CPP was his first choice. What would expect him/them to say. That said, I have high hopes for the vandals but ..................I expect success on the field.

Being from Idaho, being born in Oklahoma, having lived in Oregon, Washtington, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Texas....I wondered that same thing.
The first requisite of a good citizen in this republic of ours is that he shall be able and willing to pull his own weight.

Missouri, where they're all known to be killers of innocent men, women and children. Sorry, couldn't help the Josey Wales reference.
