Petrino

I just want to point out one thing.  When Petrino interviews, it is fairly certain that dome expansion and arena plans will be unrolled on the spot.  There will also be a need for boosters to fund an increased staff.  We need to be ready to do what it takes if he is our guy.  If that means writing checks, then let's break our piggy banks and land the hog.

I agree, I'll do all I can to double my donation (probably send it to the coach's fund).  Would really like to see the dome plans (or preferably the new stadium plans).

Re: Petrino

I know we have the VSF and the Coaching Excellence Fund but why is there not an endowment for athletics?  Seriously, someone may have some serious cash but woudl prefer to invest it in a separate endowment, or several someones.  The athletic department should encourage people to maintain whatever donations they currently make but allow the option to put money into hte endowment to provide another steady funding source.  Quite frankly, they should spell out how much endowed money it takes to fund a scholarship in perpetuity.  If it's $500,000 in endowed money to fully fund a scholarship then offer that out as a target and name scholarships after the donors for recognition.

RE: Petrino

All these responses would be best sent to Spear. Show just how much excitement there is over the mere POTENTIAL of him being our new coach. I'm not saying anything changes, but being able to say "My email has been overflowing with boosters wanting to make this Petrino hire happen" can't be bad ammo to take to the committee.

We have a number of endowed athletic scholarships.  I think Mr. Freeze is responsible for at least one of them.

Hell yes - this is another good, big reason for us to properly fund our Vandals.  Success isn't cheap.

Before I write a check I want to see a John Hancock on a contract. Let's get this done and on to the future.

P.S. My Piggybank is covered with Duct tape and Super Glue but, I think it has one more good smack in it for such a good cause !

Endowments? Really?

There aren't enough current year donations to the VSF to fully fund scholarships, let alone set aside funds for endowments. Understand, when tuition/fees to Idaho colleges increased, so did the cost of a scholarship. The VSF would love to be able to fund endowments, and don't make the mistake of assuming that we haven't tried.

Yes... we do have a number of endowments; I don't know how many, however...

I recall reading an article 30+ years ago about USC having their first three strings endowed... offense and defense...

Re: Petrino

Given Idaho's conservative policies, I think a player endowment would cost what, $400-500K?  That would generate around $15K/year?

Some of those fiscally conservative policies limited the Foundation's losses during the recent economic downturn... BSU's foundation wasn't nearly as fortunate...

Yeah, it can be frustrating at times.  It's also one of those things that is neither bad nor good, it is the rules of the game at UI.  I just wanted to put up some numbers and see if they are in the ballpark.  I am guessing most people on the outside don't know the kinds of numbers necessary.  I know it shocked me the first couple times I looked at endowments. Wow.
