Nellis talked to Bill Snyder about coaching candidates
National college football writer for CBSSports.com Dennis Dodd tweeted that Idaho president Duane Nellis says he spoke to Bill Snyder about coaching candidates last week. Robb Akey was fired at Idaho earlier. https://twitter.com/dennisdoddcbs

Re: Nellis talked to Bill Snyder about coaching candidates
Idaho alum and former coach Mike Cox is on staff there but I thought Spear said he wanted someone with head coaching experience.

Josh Wright from the Spokesman mentioned that Dana Dimel, ex-Wyoming coach, could also be target.

Re: Nellis talked to Bill Snyder about coaching candidates
Dimel had a good run at Wyoming. Don't know what happened at Houston.
In 1997, Dimel became the youngest head coach in NCAA Division I when he was named head coach at the University of Wyoming at the age of 35. Dimel spent three years at Wyoming, guiding the Cowboys to an impressive 23-12 overall record, and left Laramie as one of only 10 head coaches at the time to win no fewer than seven games in every year as a head coach.
Considered one of the nation's most successful young head coaches at the time, Dimel led the Cowboys to eight-win seasons in both 1997 and 1998 before being named head coach at the University of Houston, where he guided the Cougars' football program from 2000-2002

Re: Nellis talked to Bill Snyder about coaching candidates
I wouldn't assume that because Cox is on staff there that there was any conversation about him. I think it's more of asking Snyder about the folks that are on the list.
hindsight isn’t only 20/20, it’s usually also sober

Re: Nellis talked to Bill Snyder about coaching candidates
Or maybe Nellis is asking Snyder if he can help him get his old job at KState back?

His Houston record was 8-26. --------------------------------------------- --- mrshife wrote:

Re: Nellis talked to Bill Snyder about coaching candidates
Unless he is a masochist, I can't imagine him leaving the school he graduated from when he might be the guy in line to replace Bill Snyder.

Re: Nellis talked to Bill Snyder about coaching candidates
Josh Wright also tweeted that Nellis also could have just been picking Snyder's brain about possible candidates. If so, UI might still be in early stages of search. It would be so depressing if we were still in the early stages of a search. This hire needs to be wrapped up and announced by Nov. 26.

I would bet we will most likely wait until 12/2, as many coaches are still in the regular season and are reluctant to announce leaving before the end of the regular season. We should probably make an announcement by then.

Gotta think he asked Snyder who he would hire to turn things around in Moscow. Truly, who else would know better than Snyder what it takes?

Re: Nellis talked to Bill Snyder about coaching candidates
OK. Then by when? Still a little out of it after beating my head against the wall while watching the BYU game. Signing day is Feb. 6, 2013. I assumed the new coach is going to need as much as time as possible to put together a class.

Re: Nellis talked to Bill Snyder about coaching candidates
Snyder is one of the most organized coaches in college football. He starts scouting an opponent a year in advance. Come game time he knows every tendency. I would get his advice too.
Snyder's son Sean is said to be the guy Bill wants KSU to replace him with.
BTW, good for Nellis kudos.

Re: Nellis talked to Bill Snyder about coaching candidates
In our situation, the latest is Dec. 2nd. Stability is needed with a boots on the ground urgency regarding the players. This keeps me thinking we may have someone targeted who is ready now --- i.e. a former HC, sitting on the sidelines, but can go now.

I felt the same way and felt hope for FBS with news that Nellis was doing some good old fashioned networking with his old school. SirVandal wrote: BTW, good for Nellis kudos.

SirVandal wrote: BTW, good for Nellis kudos. Sounds as if Nellis is involved which has to be a good thing as it shows making the right hire is a priority for the President.

Re: Nellis talked to Bill Snyder about coaching candidates
I'm sorry for being cynical, a la Troy Warzocha, but I just have no confidence in Nellis when it relates to Vandal athletics. He was probably asking Snyder leading questions about moving 'UP' to the Big Sky conference.

mrshife wrote: Or maybe Nellis is asking Snyder if he can help him get his old job at KState back? Even I'll admit that one made me laugh. Seriously though, for everyone here clamoring for a 'consultant' on this new hire, who better than Bill Sny the Football Guy? Great call to make imo.
