RE: SBOE meeting........

Has anyone been following the meeting this AM? Did they address the Mission Statement stuff or are they being tabled?

Athletic budget reports were presented but not reviewed or discussed. It was noted that all 4 institutions are all running in the "black".

They mentioned this morning before starting today's agenda that the "unfinished" business from yesterday of the revisions of the mission statements  will be voted on during the afternoon session.  They confirmed everyone had copies of the revisions

Re: SBOE meeting........

I sent this last night. Feel free to use the references at the bottom.

Idaho State Board of Education,

Please reconsider your vote tomorrow concerning changing the University of Idaho's mission statement.

Based on my research I learned that the University of Idaho:
  • Currently has the highest number of National Merit Scholars enrolled in the state of Idaho and the Northwest (1).
  • The "Return of Investment" on a 4-year degree completed at the U of I is highest in the state and ranks in the top 30% nationally (2).
  • The university's six-year graduation rate that is nearly double of that of all other state funded universities in Idaho (3).
  • It is the highest nationally ranked university in the state of Idaho. (4)
  • Awarded the most research funding in the state of Idaho by the National Institute of Public Health (5)
  • Contributes nearly $935 million dollars to the state's economy (6).

These are are just a few of the many important contributions that the University of Idaho has provided Idaho's citizens and I am proud that they are consistently bringing national recognition to this great state of ours.
Thank you for your time,

Sincerely,
--

Does it do any good to write? People wrote to Nellis and commented on his FB page about facilities concerns and got very "status quo" responses back. What makes you think the SBOE is going to listen to our concerns about Idaho being the "flagship"?

We don't have a lot of other options at this point BV.  Keep the emails flowing.

A completely irrational belief that public servants will do what's right, consider all arguments equally and arrive at an informed and objective decision?

I don't know, I've never been this involved in an issue.  All I know is that when I saw the discussion yesterday it was a clear and intentional attack to discredit what THE UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO means to this state.  According to others who were watching earlier than myself, Nellis objected to the change numerous times befor finally backing down.   I feel Nellis at least deserved an e-mail from me to the SBOE for the record.

RE: SBOE meeting........

VP97.... I used to think that was the case....big emphasis on the past tense. Saw a quote the other day: "Politicians are concerned about the next election. Statesmen are concerned about the future generations" It's pretty obvious what the SBOE is...

I highly doubt anyone at this meeting is going to check their email between now and the vote. Keep your fingers crossed that it gets tabled...Facebook and crank calls may be all we get unless someone wants to storm the meeting in the next two hours.

RE: SBOE meeting........

I talked a short while ago to a friend who is a former member of the SBOE.  He said he "saw this coming a long time ago".  And, given the make up of the SBOE, he didn't seem too encouraged about the end result.  And it really wouldn't matter if the U of I had William Jennings Bryan orating before that confederacy of dunces, it's pure petty turf war politics, and no amount of persuasion will alter that.

Re: SBOE meeting........

"If UI was underperforming or if there were some serious institutional problems I can see the justification for shifting resources; we all know that is not the case."

Actually, in a sense, UI is underperforming but that is caused by restricted resources.  Unfortunately, this will be made worse rather than better by the current turf wars.

I am stunned by the lack of awareness of what it takes to be a research university.  It doesn't happen by wishing.  It takes a hundred years when faced with limited funding.

I hope BSU can catch up but it will take a long time.

He didn't back down.  But he did what educated people do when they are getting nowhere.  Only children and some plumbers continue saying the same things over and over.  He summarized his points and left it for reasonable people to decide.

Do you know what might have changed this?  A stronger presence in Boise and we had a valuable president who tried to do just that.  We are clearly losing the relationship wars and he tried to improve them.  Yet on this very board, there are still many who say he was an enemy of UI.

I have been at UI through at least 5 presidents.  The biggest positive changes came from Bob Hoover and notice what happened to him.  Also, notice what happened to Zinser.  These were both strong advocates for UI in Boise.

RE: SBOE meeting........

It was apparent that the board wasn't going to listen to him. He gave them the definition of "flagship", gave them the facts of why we meet that criteria, and they still took issue with it. BSU then chimned in that they will catch us in 5-7 years in research and gave the impression that we aren't that far ahead. Nellis did comeback and explain to them that it is a wide gap between UI and any other institution in the state. Bottom line, he made the fight but no one was listening.

The shocking thing was that one board member made the comment that the SBOE hasn't given any direction to the state universities on research, and they may want to consider limiting the amount of research that the schools can conduct. She compared it to a horse race with the schools competing against each other (not sure how that's a bad thing). I can see no other reason for this than to allow BSU to catch up with UI. It wasn't discussed more than that, but it would be a scary direction to see them go in.

Sorry, I don't know the names to call these people out individually.
