Nebraska All-Opponent Team

Nebraska All-Opponent Team

The Super Bowl is over, LOI day has passed and spring training doesn't start for ten days, so we all are all bored (how else to explain threads on Big 12 recruiting and Missouri football bored1).

So to kill time and increase post count, who would you put on the Nebraska All-Opponent team? I propose an arbitrary time frame starting with T.O.'s first season (1973) and ending last year.

I'll start with running back - Barry Sanders.

My wife and I had words, but I didn't get to use mine.

Great topic!
Barry Sanders for sure.

Is this based on how effective they were against us? If not, then Peyton Manning deserves to be in the QB'S conversation.

As for coach - Barry Switzer

Re: Nebraska All-Opponent Team

I'll throw a few out there.

Randall McDaniel, OL, Arizona St.

Ricky Dixon, DB, Oklahoma.

Dion Sanders (FSU, in 86, still have the game program)

Steve Emptmen, DL, Washington (injuries cut pro career, but was a manster in college)

Keith Jackson, TE, Oklahoma or Kellen Winslow, Missou

Going off what they did to us, some running backs

Curt Warner, Penn St.

James Wilder, Mizzou, his 78 performance against us, a no.1 contender, was probably the most dominant performance I can remember, he was a brute. He was not only nasty physical, but downright mean. I'll never forget our All-American DE, George Andrews, coming straight up to him for the tackle and Wilder slams him to the ground with the nastiest stiff arm ever seen.

Re: Nebraska All-Opponent Team

jeez, qb would be a zoo to pick

bernie kosar
jamelle halloway (might have been the best of the bunch but the qb purists would freak if you said that)
aikman
manning (both)
charlie ward
and that's just off the top of my head

warren sapp and ray lewis were on the same team in 94 along with dwayne johnson for comic relief

massive topic but fun.  some of the older names would be crazy too... the four horsemen are on there.  where does this begin and end?

Might as well just pull an all team from this time and cross out who we haven't played.

As great a RB as Barry Sanders was, and he was great, I don't remember OSU beating us one time during his time there.  Am I mistaken?

AP is the best college running back I've ever seen.

Sanders only started one year. He skipped his senior year. His sophomore season he was an all-American as a kick returner but was second string to Thurman Thomas.

Kosar at QB has to be a up there.  Freshman in the National Championship game against the SI proclaimed greatest team of all time.  He shreeded our Defense.

Re: Nebraska All-Opponent Team

How about a second list of guys who came in highly touted that we handled?

Barry, as great as he was, didn't do well against us, nor did Thurman Thomas as I recall.
We beat Peyton Manning handily and Tommie outplayed Charlie Ward all over the field (though the refs gave Ward the game).  Danny Wuerffel would have to be in there too.
Relax; we're all experts here...

Sanders didn't do squat against the Huskers in the one game he started.

A mere 189 yards rushing and a piddling 4 touchdowns.

Maybe the fact that Ken Clark had 256 yards and 3 touchdowns tempers what was mentioned about Sanders.  Heck, Steve Taylor rushed for 140 yards...on 11 carries.

Re: Nebraska All-Opponent Team

Dante Culpepper comes to mind.  Barry Sanders was amazing to watch in person.  The kid from Louisiana Tech.  I think his name was Edwards at WR.  Nearly broke NCAA records against us in Lincoln.  Steve Emptman(sp) was the best DL outside of Suh that I have seen.

Keith Jackson broke my heart a couple times.  Marcus Dupree was a man child with a child mind.  Hate thinking of those games as they were heart breakers.  We have played against some greats over the years.  Players that have gone on to be great that have done well and some that haven't.  Peyton Manning was a great QB in college and is probably top 3 all time.  Our D have a great game plan for them that game.  We clobbered a team with Fred Taylor and Javon Kearse with Florida.  Beating Warren Sapp(who may have been a big mouth but a truly great player) as well as Ray Lewis and the Rock for a national title will always rank up there for me.

Probably the greatest collection of talent we have faced was Miami in 2001.  Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow Jr was a freshman, Willis McGahee as well as several OL and DL guys that would go on to shine at the next level.

The defensive end from ASU in 96 who our OL could not handle.

Was that Derrick Rodgers?  Huskers took 3 safeties that game, the last when Rodgers sacked Frost in the end zone.

Maybe the fact that Clark and Taylor ran against the Oklahoma State defense and Sanders ran against the Blackshirts (who gave up 1535 rushing yards all year) tempers your statement. Then again maybe it doesn't.

1987, Nu held OSU's Thurman Thomas to less than ten yards. This after the much publicized bragging incident he made to our defense the night before at a movie theater. Late in the game they brought in Sanders and he ran wild but it was for nothing.

DaQuan Bowers from Clemson in the Gator Bowl during Pelini's first year. He destroyed NU's OL as a freshman.

Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin? They OWNED NU 2 years in a row.

If you went on how they performed against us, these two would not be on the list. Both were completely gassed in the 4th quarter on their home field in the 1995 Orange Bowl.

Sanders had some nice stats but mostly garbage stats as we got out to a 35-0 lead in the first quarter.

The best individual performance I saw against us when we were a much better program was Troy Aikman when he was at UCLA.

Performances by opposing players on offense during the Callahan years should not be eligible for consideration.  They need their own separate category.

And don't forget Charles Thompson, who filled in for Jamelle Holieway when he was injured in 1987.  The Sooners, led by Thompson, came to Lincoln and handed the Huskers their lunch (sad to say) that day.  Steve Taylor and Broderick Thomas should've kept quiet the week before the game and let their play do the talking instead.

Yeah, I had forgotten that.  I guess the fact that we won 63-42 and the score wasn't nearly that close made me forget that Barry's stats on the day.

Re: Nebraska All-Opponent Team

Ricky Williams single handedly beat us in Lincoln in 1998 so he HAS to be on the list.

Troy Edwards and Tim Rattay made our defense look like a middle school bunch.

But if we're really being honest, we probably just need to make an all-Sooner team.

All-Opponent Running Back.   Of our opponents over the years, Billy Sims was, by far, the best running back I've ever seen.  Number two was Marcus Dupree and number three was Barry Sanders.

In that case, James Wilder from Mizzou has to be there somewhere too.  He totally shredded our defense in Memorial Stadium back in 1978

Only one running back?  I'd add Gayle Sayers to the team!
