Build-O-Team 2013 Final

Posted: 2/7/2013 9:29 AM

Build-O-Team 2013 Final

For those of you unfamiliar with the Build-O-Team, it is an exercise where someone tries to build a two-deep depth chart from last year's recruiting class and the upcoming recruiting class. While a full team may not be constructed from one class, it has been argued that a coach should be able to build a team from two consecutive classes.

The exercise is intended to show what areas are doing well recruiting-wise and what areas could use a little more attention. It is not a depth chart for next year. It is only an exercise to show what recruiting needs may yet exist. No value judgments are made to determine where athletes fit on the depth chart, instead listing them only by incoming class. If an athlete is listed at multiple positions I will move them to the position of most need. That is not an indication of where the coaches intend for them to play. (See Edit note at bottom )

Notes:

  • Changed the original format back to 6 LBs and reduced DBs to 8. The Big 10 offenses forced the need for a more traditional format and a reduction in emphasis on the nickel and dime defenses.
  • Charles Jackson was originally recruited as part of the 2011 class but was not able to qualify until the following year so I retained him in the 2 year cycle. I did not include Jonathan Rose as part of the 2012 class.
  • The large class in 2013 allowed the coaches to balance the team so that they will have adequate depth at all positions if the talent meets expectations.  The only obvious exposure is OL

Re: Build-O-Team 2013 Final

Pretty good list, IMO.  Here is how I would rank the final 2013 Build-O-Team.

QB - A
Very happy with our 2 needed recruits.  We came, we saw, we conquered.

RB - A+
We are set at RB and we have been for quite a few years now.  That will continue another 3 to 4 years it looks like.  A great mix of backs here, we already know what Cross can do.  I think Adam Taylor is the future every down back of the team.

WR - C+
Westerkamp is the only true star in this group.  The others have potential, and as you have seen....our coaches can work with potential.

TE - B-
Solid Build-O-Team.  No huge names, but I like the direction they are going here.

OL - C+
A couple of exciting names here, but a few underdogs too.  The good news is Barney Cotton has a better track record with 2/3 star types than he does blue chippers.....as sad as that is.  bag.gif

DT - B-
Decent group, love the potential of Collins and Aaron Curry saw some time on the field last year already.

DE - A-
Love, love, LOVE this group.  AJ Natter will be an All-Big 10 type of player.

LB - A
Our future looks bright at LB.  Every name on that list has tremendous potential.

DB - B
A great mix of players.  It was so good to watch Charles Jackson playing, he really started to turn it on.

ST - A
Never underestimate a good snap on a game winning field goal, or when punting from you own end zone in a close game.

Probably would throw Jonathan Rose in with the DBs considering he's got three years play.

From my understanding Mixon is a DE/DT prospect.
