KVOR 740: MWC in talks with BYU (You Choose)

KVOR 740: MWC in talks with BYU (You Choose)

From the MWCBoard.com
Jim Arthur, play-by-play for AF football, said this morning that MWC officials are in talks with BYU to return to the MWC in 2013 for all sports.

And now "The Rest of the Story."

There is lots of talk about who might join the MWC. Give me your top three teams with your first choice being the one you would choose if only a 12th member is selected. The next two would be if there would be 14 members. Here are my choices:

1.  BYU
2.  UTEP
3.  SMU

Same as it has been the whole way...

BYU
Houston
SMU
UTEP
SDSU

Don't need anyone else East of Texas... Except maybe Memphis if they really wanted.

BYU
SDSU
UTEP

I know a lot of people do not want SDSU in the conference and I can do without their fans arrogance, but are they really that much different that the arrogance people complained about BYU? A since that is recruiting ground for UNM I think it might be useful to be able to play out there on occasion.
I have a feeling that SDSU will want to keep away from the MWC so it will be a moot point.

Like it or not SDSU and BYU will come first if they agree to come back, period.

For 12th member:

1. BYU
2. SDSU (because Houston and SMU won't join without the other)
3. UTEP

For 14 members:

1. BYU
2. Houston
3. SMU

or

1. BYU
2. SDSU
3. UTEP

If Houston and SMU not interested

If we are going to mess around with 14 might as well go the whole route and try to grab 16.

Where is 104.1 (The Team) getting it's freakin' sources? An "Air Force" and a "lobo" station reporting this before a Utah station? Seems sketchy. Link to Mountain West Connection Story.

My choices include:

12. SDSU (I see this as probable and a necessary evil)

13-14. SMU-Houston

15-16: BYU-Tulsa

Alternate 13-14: Houston-BYU

Re: KVOR 740: MWC in talks with BYU (You Choose)

I say resend offer to Hawaii and Utah State.  We dont need a football only member and if we get BYU why add USU?  Makes no since.  Then get SDSU back, they are a good fit for MWC, football is strong in the past 3-4 years and a top 20 basketball propgram.  Then BYU, they could be a power in football again in a conferance with BSU and a couple of Texas schools.  Then go hard after Houston and SMU for the TV markets and the recruiting area.  It will be much easiser to recruit Texas football player if they know they will go home to play 2-4 in their playing time.  I would love to see UTEP in the MWC, good market.

So something like this

SDSU
SJSU
FSU
UNLV
UN
BSU
BYU

Wyoming
CSU
AFA
UNM
Houston
SMU
UTEP

SDSU is close to making their announcement to stay. Sources are saying they will announce  before BYU.

Re: KVOR 740: MWC in talks with BYU (You Choose)

SDSU and BYU will probably get first nod.
After that I can't see why anyone (in a position of authority), would choose UTEP over Houston.
Sure, UTEP is closer to UNM and makes for the renewal of a great rivalry, but that's about it.
Houston has a bigger market, is a better recruiting base for conference members to make inroads in, and has a lot more potential to be good in football than UTEP does, and that's what this all boils down to.
If we wanted UTEP because they are a regional rival, we might as well form a conference with NMSU and Northern Arizona while we are it.

At least BYU fans had some reason that could claim arrogance.  Frankly, in the many years I have watched this league, with the exception of a few good basketball teams, I see no reason SDSU fans should feel they are on top of the world.  And, I strongly suspect they are about to crawl back realizing they weren't.  Strong conferences want nothing to do with the azbutts, let alone their fans.

BYU
Houston
SMU
Memphis
UTEP
Rice

. . . .

somewhere SDSU.

BTW - haven't seen much of SDSU1971 lately.  excited

Good points red, I didn't even know SDSU had any fans until these past few years when they finally got good in hoops and started winning a few football games.  If they can maintain that for at least a decade than they can claim some arrogance but decades of futility and sudden fame is not that impressive or desirable.

I'm all for bringing them back but if Aztec fan expects us to beg they can just continue off into land of the forgotten.  They need us more than we need them.

RE: KVOR 740: MWC in talks with BYU (You Choose)

DV:  Funny how the tide has suddenly turned.  We had to recently read SDSU1971 telling us how despicable our football team is/was and how SDSU wanted nothing to do with our conference.  For many years I watched San Diego teams be so bad and wondered how with the resources and recruiting base of California the azbutts had accomplished so little.

As poor decisions seem to have dried up the financial resources of Cali - SDSU thought they had hit a gold mine with the big least.   Laughable. . . .

Now as the azbutts world crumbles - not a peep from the fans.

I do not know if the MWC can or will attract some Texas schools or bring back BYU - but, either would make our conference far better than having SDSU.  Rocky will not sustain success (and most likely never win another bowl game) and Fisher is close to retirement.  Soon neither program will be all that good again.
