Boise makes offer to SDSU to return part of contract.
The Idaho Statesman has obtained a copy of the specifics in the contract with BSU. voices.idahostatesman.com/2013...state_exit_fees Things previously unknown: the BE/BW exit fees will be paid largely from monies previously forfeited by BSU for leaving the MWC. AND the kicker, The Mountain West will extend an option to San Diego State to join the league before offering membership to any other institution. The right of first option to San Diego State shall expire on Jan. 31, 2013. So it appears that Boise, like any good pimp, is trying to protect it's little whore. So we will know by the end of the month who the 12th member is.

Alpha, you have a typo in your OP
From the article:
The right of first option to San Diego State shall expire on Jan. 31.
Not Jan 21 as in your post

Re: Boise makes offer to SDSU to return part of contract.
Thank you for the heads up Alpha. I fixed your link for you. I knew that SDSU would always be back in the fold, but that little wrinkle is interesting...the shift means the MWC has to justify going to 14 now. Hmmm. Boise should still push to reduce the exit fee with legal counsel, but paying with their own tv distribution money is very smart.

RE: Boise makes offer to SDSU to return part of contract.
So the question is now up to SDSU. I wonder if the MWC will put any stipulations on SDSU before joining.

Surely San Diego State wouldn't say no to returning to the MWC at this point....would they?

They could but they would be foolish to do so. They come back with their lil tail between their legs.

If they did, though, it'd be admitting to everyone that Independence was a failure, and that the Cougars are a step behind Utah. I don't think they'll admit that.

Not Jan 21 as in your post Thanks Abq. Honestly, I copied and pasted the date from the article. I have fixed the date.

If they did, though, it'd be admitting to everyone that Independence was a failure, and that the Cougars are a step behind Utah. I don't think they'll admit that. As much as I despise BYU and their arrogant fans, they likely bring the best value to the conference. As far as the independence thing, the world around them has changed and they can always site the fact that the playoff along with the revised MWC contracts have made conference affiliation more attractive than at the time that they left.

Re: Boise makes offer to SDSU to return part of contract.
Boise put the clause about offering SDSU first in their contract to avoid a lawsuit.

Interesting read...thank you very much!
Aside from all the BSU / SDSU stuff here is what I find most interesting: The national TV bonus applies also to non-conference away games which basically means that most body bag games will now pay the school in question an additional $300k....

Re: Boise makes offer to SDSU to return part of contract.
Votes by conference members do not supercede the contract. Anyway that is what I read in the contract.
If that`s true, then SDSU, as long as they and the MWC agree on terms for the Aztecs joining the MWC, then that`s what governs. No vote necessary.
BTW, I don`t think either party can place outrageous terms on the other. That is, they both have to negotiate in good faith. I think the MWC can withhold SDSU`s share of conference revenue since they held back Boise`s. But since they didn`t charge an entrance fee to Boise, then I don`t see where they can charge an entrance fee to SDSU. The TV deal that Boise gets can be obtained by SDSU. They would have to negotiate with CBS for that to happen I think.

Re: Boise makes offer to SDSU to return part of contract.
The AD's at SDSU and Boise State should be fired if they were so short sided to not negotiate a better deal with the Big East to cover themselves from having to pay a buyout should the Big East membership and TV Contract change drastically from what was originally discussed.
Most of us on this board said from the start that we didn't think the BE was going to be able to deliver on their promises and we were all proven right. Had many of us been the AD's at these schools we either would have never agreed to join the BE or had an out should something like what just happened happen and not left liable for paying a buyout.
Horrible foresight on something that seemed fairly obvious to many of us.

Well obviously the current members had ro agree to this contract before it was signed so there is no need for any additional vote. And as far as SDSU is concerned: The contract only states that until the end of January the MWC cannot invite another team without first inviting SDSU. It doesn't say anything about the conditions or whether we have to invite them at all.

Re: Boise makes offer to SDSU to return part of contract.
Currently the new MW TV Contract will pay a little over $2 million to each school. If the MW adds SMU and Houston the 5th and 10th largest TV markets, would that increase the TV money enough to payout even larger amounts to the 14 MW schools instead of the $2 million the 12 schools (assuming SDSU becomes the 12th member) will be receiving?

Hard to say. But having more teams does mean more games to sell outside of the CBS contract. I'd think the "strengthening" of the MWC would be worth it, if the money didn't decrease too much (or obviously, if it went up!) Also, there's some benefit to having the MWC geographically spread over 3 time zones. It allows for more non-overlapping games, hence more college football inventory with flexible, non-conflicting times for a TV partner.
"If teams don't think we're deserving," says Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier, "we'd be happy to settle it on the field."

Re: Boise makes offer to SDSU to return part of contract.
If you ask me, owning their own digital rights could become fairly signifigant for BSU in the coming years. The conference is going that route and it could be much more developed and on the way to replacing the MTN in as soon as a few years.....BSU might have one more thing to sell with their own olympic sport or football simucast.
The conference doesn't get a crack at it until 2018. I think that's fairly ahead of the curve.

RE: Boise makes offer to SDSU to return part of contract.
As you all write, SDSU would be STUPID to not return to the MWC now.
Of course they were dumb enough to leave before so...
