Re: David Guthrie commits...
A good all around strong safety. Strong, and a good tackler. Not bad in the speed and awareness department too.
Welcome Mr. Guthrie. Welcome to the Lobo family.

Re: David Guthrie commits...
We are getting some young talent along with some JC guys in rebuilding our secondary.
I like seeing our coaching staff go strong after these players that play in the secondary, the sooner we get that area fixed the sooner we will be bowling again.

RE: David Guthrie commits...
Welcome Mr. Guthrie You are going to love it here in New Mexico. And you will enjoy playing for Coach Davie---he is a class act. With your superior speed I think you will be a big asset for our team and be a real play-maker.

RE: David Guthrie commits...
I'm no talent evaluator, just a guy who watches the occasional football game. But what really stood out to me watching the highlight reel is how fast his feet move. He has speed, at least relative to the guys he played against, but his quickness looked tremendous. He takes four of five steps to everyone else's two or three so he can change directions or accelerate on a dime. He looks like he's got really good hands, good swivel to his hips, and isn't afraid to deliver some big hits. He's listed as a WR/DB/kicker, but at 5'10-ish the dude looks like he could be another stud in the RB corp or a really special punt/kick returner to boot.

Re: David Guthrie commits...
Found this on the web which was posted some 4 hours ago. We all need to realize how hard it on recruits when multiple well versed coaches come calling! There may be several flips both ways before the NLI is signed. Guthrie looks like a good one, just what we need. Hooray for Jeff Mills ... he won today, but what about tomorrow? "After committing to Illinois on Tuesday, David Guthrie knew he still had a visit with New Mexico defensive coordinator Jeff Mills scheduled for the next day." http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/ncfrecruiting/west /post?id=6608

This kid's from my old neck of the woods in rural, football obsessed Southern Oregon - same relatively small school (Douglas HS) that produced another decent safety awhile back - Troy Polamalu.

Re: David Guthrie commits...
This guy seems really solid. With our depleted secondary, he will likely play right away. Glad to have him as a Lobo.

Re: David Guthrie commits...Again!
Im wondering if anybody here thinks that maybe Davie shouldnt have let him come back here after he changed his mind on us the first time?

Re: David Guthrie commits...Again!
No one should be wondering that. These kids are under heavy pressure and trying to make a very important decision. When you are buying a car or deciding on a resturant to go to, do you ever change your mind? Be happy he is going to be a Lobo and probably be in the starting line-up in 9 months.

nightwolf wrote: Im wondering if anybody here thinks that maybe Davie shouldnt have let him come back here after he changed his mind on us the first time? That's an interesting question, because it suits the team mentality that he promotes...but you would have to sell that notion to the extreme that Guthrie's flip was somehow dishonest, malicous or intentionally untrustworthy. For a recruit that is looking into the location and team of his next 2 to 4 years, that's definitely NOT the case. At this point a recruit has to assess that a school/team works for him before he locks in his eligibility because he'll be held to the team's standards when he's apart of it. Once he's enrolled, signed his LOI and apart of the team, the team rules and other standards are very much looked to be enforced and breaking them much more detrimental to the coaches and the team itself. Fairness to the other players keeping the same standard would then come into play. Now you just let a kid make sure...he's sure. Otherwise the NCAA will steal a year of eligibility just to let him move to another school.
