I hope you're not referring to Woodbury as he's look really overwhelmed in summer league games. I think they are establishing some unrealistic expectations as they lose their only quality player from an 8th place conference team.

Re: McCaffery signs 7 year deal

He has to know Oates was talking about Uthoff.

McCaffery will have mud on his face if Uthoff turns out to be a flop and he orchestrated that whole situation as it is pretty obvious he did.  Also it was pretty obvious he made those comments to SI

This deal is crazy.  McCaffery has done absolutely nothing at Iowa.  ZERO.  His claim to fame is beating the worst Wisconsin team in years.  We were Iowa's Super Bowl where they had to make it "Free pizza night" to the students to make the stadium seem full.

I don't think it is wise to completely discount McCaffery's potential at Iowa.

Has information come out regarding McCaffery making those comments or going after Uthoff?

I know what it looks like but we really don't know.

Stlbadger knows what Oates was referring to!

Now at least Uthoff can have someone pay for his schooling this year.biggrin
Seriously,he has accomplished nothing. This year may be no better than last. Remember,Iowa swept Wisconsin and Minnesota, yet still didn't make the tourney. Doubtful they sweep both again this year. Also beat IU,which they will be hard pressed to do again.
Franny's teams remind me of the 2008 Green Bay PAckers. They lose a lot,but they lose pretty.

I was having fun with the iowa fans predicting Woodbury averaging a double / double this year. Uthoff isn't tearing up the summer league either. I can't wait to see him go head-to-head with Sam.

Re: McCaffery signs 7 year deal

I don't get the uproar about McCaffery "orchestrating" Uthoff coming to Iowa. It's pretty obvious that Uthoff very badly wanted to come to Iowa, enough so that he turned down scholarship offers from the likes of Florida, Marquette and Iowa State to walk on to the Hawkeye squad. Given his strong desire to come to Iowa, is it really that hard to imagine Uthoff contacting one of his AAU coaches and saying, "Could you ask Coach McCaffery if there would be a place for me on the Iowa roster?"

Re: McCaffery signs 7 year deal

Having watched Fran coach at UNCG, I have a pretty high opinion of him.  To judge a new coach on his first two years at a program that was pretty rock bottom when he took over isn't really fair.  Let's see how he's doing after 4-5 years, when his recruits make up the whole team.

Bo's ability to take over a team that on paper had almost no returning talent and win a championship with them is pretty rare, indeed!

Why does anyone even care what another coach who has accomplished exactly zero in the B1G make in compensation?  If Iowa boosters and the university want to pony up to pay their coach, so what?

I don't think anybody is discounting his potential at Iowa... what they are questioning is giving a 7-year-contract to a guy who tied Northwestern for 7th in the Big Ten standings.

Yes... Iowa is clearly much better than the awful teams they've had recently. For Fran to earn the contract he just signed, he needs to have a team that finishes in the upper 3rd of the Big Ten.

Which of OSU, MSU, UW, Indiana do you think he is going to pass up? For that matter, do you feel he can win more than Purdue, Illinois or Michigan?

And no information has "come out" about Iowa going after Uthoff. Plenty of it has "stayed in".

I actually agree with this. Lock up your average coach and then complain about that you keep him around to avoid a big buyout later. Good for us.

Iowa suffers from,as a former president once said, the bigotry of low expectations.

Re: McCaffery signs 7 year deal

What has McCaffery done so far to show that he is "average" as a coach? He took all three programs he was at before Iowa to the NCAAs. He improved by seven wins in his second season despite:

1. Losing the best player on the team before the season started
2. Getting about half the expected production from the starting PG and the best returning big man
3. Still being saddled with several of the previous staff's recruiting mistakes

He hasn't shown yet that he is going to achieve on the level of Bo Ryan, but I also don't think he has done anything to show that he is just "average" either.

I saw this tweet too, but didn't Bo do the same thing with Sharif? Or were the rules different then?

You obviously did not see them lose to the other state teams. Not pretty at all.

The UW home loss to Iowa was one of the worst losses of the Ryan era.

What you describe of course is tampering which is against the rules.

Agree - it reminds me of the Zooker situation at Illinois (coach coming into a mess, having marginal success, gets a huge contract) although I think Fran is a better coach.

Re: McCaffery signs 7 year deal

Not like the Zook situation at all. Zook's resume consisted primarily of running a powerhouse program into the ground. If Zook had proven himself by taking three other smaller programs to bowl games before coming to Illinois, then perhaps it would be a similar situation.

Re: McCaffery signs 7 year deal

  • His contract is based more on what he is about to do rather than what he has done.  What kind of record did you expect him have his first two years with the roster that he had?!  And those underrated kids more than handled your badger basketball teams in those two years.
  • Last sear, he signed two great prospects from the state.  This is especially important because the TOP talent in the state has almost always gone outside the state of Iowa to play (LaFrentz, Collison, Harrison Barnes, Hinrich...)
  • His style of play is loved by fans, players, and just importantly, recruits.
  • Carver Hawkeye Arena has finally started to fill up again.  Butts in the seats, will more than pay for the raise.
  • He was within an overtime of beating Bo, who is obviously a great coach, three times in a row, which on paper, looked like no chance of happening.  Give credit where credit is due.
  • I hope we can keep him but I honestly think once a big offer, especially out east comes, it will be hard for him to turn down.  I hope I'm wrong.

I don't see McCaffery leaving any time soon. His wife's family is nearby, which he has said is very important.

Plus, McCaffery was offered the Seton Hall and St. John's jobs before choosing Iowa, so it's not like he was lacking offers to stay out East if that's what he really wanted to do.

I think the fact that Iowa has played UW so tough the last 2 years and now has stolen one of UWs players has really stoked a near dead rivalry, so it will be fun to see how McCaffrey does now that the expectations are higher

Re: McCaffery signs 7 year deal

Totally agree.  Wisconsin has proven itself on the hardwood and the football field and is a rivalry that should be played twice a year in hoops and once a year in football.  Beating the Badgers in hoops was significant in negotiations.  Stoked is a perfect word.

This.

Who does Iowa supplant?  They aren't going to jump 4 teams for sure (OSU, MSU, WIS and Indiana).  It's doubtful that they surpass Purdue or Michigan.  Those teams have proven coaches that have done it for years.

The 4 victories against Wisconsin and Minnesota aren't likely to happen again this upcoming season.  Nor is a victory against Indiana.  Lastly, no one really even considered Iowa an opponent they had to prepare for.  If they do in fact get better they also aren't going to have the luxury of facing opponents that installed their gameplan for them 5-minutes before tip off!!!

Finally, what happens if Iowa misses the tournament again this year?  Zero NCAA's in 3 years under Fran.  Basketball isn't like football where you need at least 4 years to see how things really are going to look.  Change can happen much more rapidly in basketball.
