Last Shot Candidates?

Last Shot Candidates?

I'm just wondering if this next season will open any options to the guy who takes the last shot in a close game.    I don't want to open a can of worms with a Trae Jackson gripefest, so try to be reasonable here.  Is there anyone other than Trae who will be put in the mix?   Or will the entire universe know who is going to take next year's last shots before they break the huddle?

Re: Last Shot Candidates?

There's no way this thread won't be a Traevon gripefest.

That said, we're going to have pretty much the same team so it'll probably look similar. Koenig will be in at the end of more games. He got some of the late clock isos instead of Traevon when they played together last year, though those usually didn't come in high leverage situations. If anyone starts getting the call instead of Traevon, it'd probably be him.

I'm thinking Dekker may get a shot.

Re: Last Shot Candidates?

If they break the huddle with time to run a play, only the team will know who is supposed to take it.  If the play doesn't work or if they don't have time to run one then it will be Jackson that will handle to ball for one last chance if he's in the game.  That might mean he takes the shot, it might mean someone else gets open and he finds them.

Re: Last Shot Candidates?

apparently you forgot who took the last shot in the kentucky game? that player is back this year and tmoney is pretty sure that he will be taking the last shot like he has for quite awhile and hitting a few game winners .

Re: Last Shot Candidates?

Has Bo ever had a last second play that didn't involve the PG/SG waiting until the clock ran down and then either driving the lane or shooting a three? I'm not being sarcastic. I can only think of last second attempts by guards - Kam Taylor, Jordan Taylor, Trae, Gasser, Tre Hughes, Flowers all took last second shots. Although maybe it's not that odd for a guard to take a last shot....just seems weird I can't remember any non guard doing it.

Unfortunately this is true and unfortunately our returning PG was our worst shooter of the 8 rotation guys last year - not stl hyperbole - just the stats.

Re: Last Shot Candidates?

If you are a betting man, the odds on favorite is Jackson...I think a lot of us are hopping that Dekker finally because comfortable using the dribble because he would be the best mismatch if that is the case. Depending on matchups, I'd be comfortable with 6 guys taking the final shot and that is pretty cool to be able to say.

I'm guessing many of the shots you remember involve ball-screens, with the guard being asked to read the play depending on the deployment of the defense.

Two examples:

Kam Taylor made the proper read and beat MSU at home. Flowers made the proper read and beat Texas in Austin.

Jackson beat Minnesota when he got into the midrange and had a good matchup and used a pump-fake.

Some others:

Hughes did run a clear-out on top to beat FSU in 2009 NCAAs.

Butch beat Indiana with the bank -- off a hand-off from Landry. Landry got the ball on the wing and had a clear-out.

Brust's winning shot vs. Michigan (the half-court game) was a read off motion.

Wilson had the ball late vs. Syracuse but passed up a drive and kicked late to Taylor, who had to shoot.

Berggren hit what turned out to be the game-winning 3 at OSU in 2011-'12 off a two-man game with Taylor.

That is all I can recall for now based on scores/my memory.

Well the ball will be in Jackson's hands no doubt. If he has an open shot he will take it and if he is double teamed he is going to take. I feel comfortable with Dekker, Kaminsky, Gasser, Koenig and Jackson if he actually has a good look.

Re: Last Shot Candidates?

Didn't know that was a designated role anywhere but Kentucky.

I like the idea of anybody on this team with a great look.

I also like the idea that the point guard with the ball goes and gets the great look.

Simplifies everything and (hopefully) puts clock management in the right hands.  Job is to generate a good shot with little or no time left.  Not a bad shot.  Not too much time.

Tough gig that will be made easier by a team that can really space the floor with great shooters.

Our starting point guard, whoever that will be. It's always been like that.

Re: Last Shot Candidates?

IMO, you want people who are comfortable with the ball in their hands, determined, solid at the line, and able to hit a contested jumper. At the end of this last season Kaminsky fit that better than others. I can see, however, any one of the others games improving to the point where they too are that guy.

Much ado about nothing.

The 2014-15 team will be so good that the last shot scenario will not rear it's ugly head.

Nothing but double digit wins, baby!

Re: Last Shot Candidates?

Well, as I was typing out the post, it occurred to me that someone would mention the possibility that there won't be any close games.    Then it occurred to me that that was too deranged to even consider.   This is, after all, college basketball.    This team is going to lose some games.

Nice summary, Mr. Potrykus.    I was remembering the Texas game which was for me the clearest example of a perfect end-of-game set play executed to perfection.    In fact,  it is the memory of that play that often frustrated me when watching how the Badgers executed whatever end-iof-game set plays they ran last year.

Wasn't it Trae who took the last shot, left of the paint, against Kentucky?    A shot he's made a thousand times.    I'll bet that shot has been on his practice regimen this off season.

Re: Last Shot Candidates?

Trae has made that shot multiple times to win games in the last 10 seconds. Unfortunately, that one didn't go in.

The boys are going to be foaming at the mouth to get back out there this season.

Have we ever been ranked in the top 5 to open a season? The year they hit #1, I believe they started at #9.

COD, don't get me wrong, I still think the most likely candidate to take that shot is Jackson. He certainly isn't hesitant to take it.

I said # 1 center, not team.
Has Bo ever had the top center in NCAA basketball?
It's even more unusual when combined with an experienced point guard and a top 20 forward!
Get it to Frank!

Hoping to see a few more 2-man, pick-n-pop situations with Trae and Frank this season. It's up to Trae who gets the shot.

There's a breakdown of returning Big Ten players and how efficient they were last season in pick-and-roll/pick-and-pop situations.

Not only was Jackson adept at the play, he is the only one of the returning players who dished more than he shot on the play.

Now if he can just learn to keep his head up and look for open teammates off a dribble drive, we'll be on to something!!!

Big Ten's Best Pick and Roll Players. Jackson was rated lower than he should have been by this blogger based on his points generated per possession.
