Sam scores 19

Posted: 2/26/2013 10:29 PM

Sam scores 19

along with 4 beautiful assists in only 19 minutes and only 6 shots. Where's the clown who mocked me for saying he could avg 18 next year? Can you imagine when he gets to take some of those bunnies that Evans clanks? They'll be automatic for Sam.

6 shots... still impressive nonetheless. A silly turnover at the end kinda sucks... but I guess 2.11 PPP ain't bad.

Could of had more assists too but Evans missed a couple 2 foot shots on passes from Dekker and fumbled another one that ended up a jump ball.

I had my wife watch the replay of the bomb he hit - she asked if that's normal. I said only for Sam Dekker.

Bombs are normal for Brust, too. It's crazy how deep Brust's range is. The one he bombed from WAYYY still only out softly popped out of the rim..it was halfway down.

Ben's bombs are like the old Bob Cousy shots - Sam's are actual jumpers. Don't get me wrong - I like seeing Ben nail them as well.

Seems odd to have RE taking a shot for ~ every 2 min he is on the floor.

Go Badgers!  On Wisconsin!

Sam's shot has an arc and rotation on it that are just kind of poetry in motion.

He had a heck of a game tonight on offense, and was again pretty solid on defense.  Bo has brought him along beautifully.

The sky is the limit in a couple years.

Re: Sam scores 19

For nearly the entire first half and much of the 2nd half I felt Sam was the best player on the court and it wasn't even close.  IMHO, his ceiling is extremely high.  He is a 6'7'' SF that could play SG if he is ever able to defend the position and he has one of the most beautiful and confident looking jumpers from catch to release I have seen from a badger.  He also has great touch around the hoop, incredible vision, and is athletic enough.  If he continues to get stronger, improves his agility, and hones his defense he may be the most well rounded player we've ever had.

By the way, there were a couple times last night where I thought of Jimmer Fredette.  There is this obvious confidence Sam plays with that you know when he is "the man" he will be shooting similar percentages on twice the shots and will completely take over games, which could easily translate into a 20+ppg scorer.  I for one am excited for him and hope he continues to bring it every day so he can reach his obvious potential.

With his passing and vision I just keep thinking he could play guard ala Magic J.  We will be too deep at guard next year.  Wouldn't that be a matchup nightmare. pirate

I think he could be a Robbie Hummel type player for us (before the surgery).  Hopefully he plays 4 years for us.  If so, in his junior/senior years I think we could finally make the Final 4 and possibly win the whole thing.

I think Sam has a higher upside than a pre-surgery Hummel.

I had to laugh when Dekker passed up an open 3 early in the shot clock and passed it right to Evans who went on to immediately take a long 2 point jumper...with a lot of time left.

Everythiong was good with Sam except for one GLARING deficiency:  He high dribbles...needs to change that.

Re: Sam scores 19

He'd probably be averaging 25+ on a run and gun type of team.

I wasn't born in Wisconsin, but I got here as soon as I could.

Yes you are an idiot and I'd bet all the whiskey in Ireland that Dekker doesn't average 18 next year.  Great game and I LOVE this kid but he was hot tonight.  He's not going to hit 4 of 5 3's every game.  Besides if he is our best scorer he will face different defenses aimed at stopping him.  This year he hasn't shown much of a mid-range game.  It's either been drives to the hoop or long range shots.  I know he has that in him but he's got to prove it.

I stand by my prediction of 14-15ppg

Bo has brought Dekker along beautifully this season and has taught him the value of defense.  Our team is humming right now, I don't see how anyone could have any complaints.

Re: Sam scores 19

He is thinking less and playing more as evidenced by his increased beautiful passes and passes to set up others for an assist, which he has shown glimpses of this season, but is showing more of late.  The game is slowing down for him, it seems to me.

In addition, his defense has grown leaps and bounds, especially in the last three weeks.  Rebounding better too, could still use that size and quickness a bit.

His improvement greatly enhances our chances in tourney situations...he's a guy who can hit shots against good defense and seems to revel in pressure situations.

What is scary for the rest of the BIG is that he will get stronger, improve in the post, improve his dribble drive game and begin to play with even more confidence - he has passed up some late clock 1-4 setups and defers to the seniors - to use former BIG players, I'm thinking more like Glenn Robinson or Glen Rice than Robbie Hummel (even pre-surgery).

Add Bronson and crew next year and this group will be fun to watch the next three years!!!

You draw a real hard line between 15 and 18 ppg.

Re: Sam scores 19

I thoiught last night was his best overall game, but his passing is what really got me excited.  He was really fnding open looks for guys and could have had 2-3 more assists if guys hit some bunnies.  He also had a nice move in the post.

On a slightly different note, with Gasser coming back, some improvement in Dekker, TJ and the guys coming in next year I think we may start to see some more of the swing type offense.  I like the way the roster is shaping up with a lot of guys in that 6'3" to 6'8" range on the court together as interchangeable parts.

Re: Sam scores 19

The great thing about Sam is he truely can get his shot whenever he wants.  His release is so high.  Being a freshman, he has done a great job of fitting in with the upperclassmen and figuring out his role.

I would expect we will see a more aggressive Dekker next year and his offensive talent will be on full display.  The other great thing about him is his vision and passing is very good.  It helps teammates get easy baskets.

Re: Sam scores 19

A) After one of Sam's many great plays last night Revsine let out some sort of involuntary reaction.  It may have been a 'wow' or something but it was barely audible. You could tell it had gotten to the point where he had moved past the point of normal announcing and he had started just being a fan of what he was watching.

B) That being said, a lot of that was on Nebraska.  They didn't belong on the same floor as Wisconsin last night.  Sam's shooting at this point is pretty obviously extraordinary, but I don't think we should get used to his passing being at that level.  It will be at some point in the next couple of years, but I think for now that will be an anomaly. Nebraska just left a million passing lanes, as shown by the number of other nice passes we made last night.  I could have made that pass to Evans in the 2nd half for the dunk.

Re: Sam scores 19

If you listed the best passes for assists for this season for the badgers,  several of them would be by Dekker.  He "sees the court" like no other player we have.  and his passes are firm, not soft.  He also has the awareness to backoff when there is no opening.  He won't always make such a high percentage of those outside shots,  but he has a nice "high" release which is very valuable (hard to defend).  Like everyone on the board I look forward to watching him as he further develops his game under Bo's tutelage.

Evans was very efficient last night. And for the most part Dekker and Evans were on the floor at the same time.

LOL, I would say "very efficient" is a bit extreme.  13 points on 14 shots.  If you consider that very efficient, expectations are at an all time low.  It would be better to say his efficiency was acceptable going up against a terrible defense.  He had a few wide open layups.

It was 14 points on 13 shots (plus 7 boards, two of which were on offense) but don't let facts get in the way of your rage. And if you're not going to count his layups then I'm not gonna count the two missed tips. See? It's easy to change stats when you have an agenda.
