Miracle Bo

Posted: 1/13/2013 12:53 PM

Miracle Bo

I was at the game yesterday.  Who was that #12?  He looked an awful lot like Traevon Jackson, but that just couldn't have been him.

This guy I saw yesterday was pretty good with the ball, shot with confidence, drove to the hoop and shot with his off-hand, defended pretty well, and generally looked like a real point guard.

I've heard over and over and over and over again that Traevon Jackson can't possibly be our point guard, now that Gasser is gone.

Bo, you've done it yet again.  You might be the best, best, best point guard teacher in the country.

Thank you Bo !

Bo is great, but Experience is a pretty good teacher, too.

Still lots of work to do.  Gonna see a whole lot of ball pressure in the half-court in Bloomington, Iowa City and when the Gophs comes to town.  Will be a different challenge.

Glad to see him and Marshall being aggressive.

Still had a couple bad TOs but getting better.

Still have much work to do especially against the press, and he / they will eventually learn they don't have to do it themselves. Our front court is above average in ball handling which really helps.

While our ball handling isn't the best, this team has 5 guys who can pass and catch the ball with correct spacing and positioning, which is even better than having a great dribbler.  This is the hallmark of Bo ball that is a lost art within basketball these days.  Our guards may not be prototypical ball handlers, but our bigs make up for it with their mobility and ability to pass and catch.

Agreed.

Traevon is playing with more confidence.  Loved his pass to a cutting Dekker for an easy score.  Loved that Dekker made the cut instead of looking for the ball 35 feet from the hoop.

+1 to all - how could any PG in the country not be interested in playing for Bo?

For the same reason we don't get a top 5 running back every year.  Kids like immediate gratification vs long term benefit.

Unfortunately true statement.

I actually disagree.

The high school kids who are truly great point guards probably aren't going to listen.  It's Bo's ability to teach kids who are average or above average and make them into really good point guards that I admire.

Next year's freshman should be an interesting advancement to watch, because as he comes into the program, Koenig will be among the most talented point guards UW has ever recruited.

Great win.  Still 13 turnovers- Jackson had 4.  61% freethrows-- good news is Ryan made two in a row.  can't leave points on the floor

Sorry to be Debbie Downer, but Jackson had 4 turnovers and only 1 assist. At least two of his turnovers instantly led to fast break buckets for Illinois when they couldn't score against our halfcourt defense to save their lives.

Yeah Bo mentioned those in his post game interview, but also talked on how he over came those lapses.

He will need to steadily improve as the schedule only gets tougher.

Re: Miracle Bo

Jackson needs to limit the turnover that leads to an uncontested layup or dunk. He has been good for one or two of those per game this year.

This.  It's getting better, but it's not where it's going to be by the end of the year.  I like the confidence that both Trae and George had, and confidence is key.

We Have a Point Guard!

Tremendous string of 2 games from Traevon Jackson.  No doubt now that we have found a point guard.  He was the difference yet again tonight.

If he plays like this the rest of the season, this team will be damn hard to beat.

RE: Miracle Bo

His toughness is impressive. It's just unbelievable when you let it soak in. A true soph, more of a combo guard than true PG, and a guy very few good programs wanted. Yet here he is as the focal point of this teams improvement and leading a team that could be special if he can consistently bring what he brought the last two games. Tough, tough kid and a great competitor.

Jackson - Bo's best PG work??

I would rank it just behind Travon Davis as I think Jackson has a lot more talent than Davis and just ahead of Kam Taylor. Taylor was a gunning 2 guard in HS - it took a lot of work to make him a dependable 1. Devin had unbelievable talent so he doesn't make the top 3 and Jordan was born to be a Bo Ryan PG.

It's too early to tell.  He is definitely improving, which is great to see.  The guard position for UW for the next couple of years is going to be very interesting.

Re: Jackson - Bo's best PG work??

The funny thing is that after this season TJ will probably go back to being a combo guard and may well never start a game at point guard for UW again (for those that care about "starters").  But he'll have all those skills and experience in the bank, and UW will have a ton of flexibility because of it.

I think that TJ is improving just means that Koenig won't get a ton of minutes next year.
I like it slow, just like Bo.

Where did everyone go that was crying for Marshall to start at PG?  I can't hear you!  T-Jack proved the last two games why he is starting.  Bo knows.

We lose 3 Seniors in the front court. We will probably play a lot of 3 guard lineups next year.

Re: Jackson - Bo's best PG work??

In a similar role as now. Playing alongside Jackson and/or Gasser when he returns. Can never have too many ball handlers on the court. Jackson and Gasser's ability to guard multiple spots allows this to happen. That would be a lineup leaps and bounds better defensively than JBo, Hughes, and Taylor were and they spent a lot of time on the floor at the same time. Nowhere near the same offensive punch though. Albeit the overlap next year with Brust and Koenig there will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Re: Jackson - Bo's best PG work??

George is very talented and he will continue to get better.  He'll find a role.

I agree that we will see more three guard lineups next year unless Evan, Duje or Zach improves tremendously (not saying they can't, but we need to see it).  There's no way that we can absorb all the lost front court minutes with just Frank, Sam, Vitto and Nigel. Too little experience/toughness in that group.

Assuming Josh is healthy, I would expect at least two guards to redshirt next year from among Zak, Jordan and Bronson.  That's right, I said Bronson.  I know he's a very good prospect but realistically is he going to jump past George and take minutes from Trae, much less from Ben or Josh?  That would surprise me.  If he does, good for him.

This - I think a Gasser / Jackson / Brust / Dekker / Kaminsky lineup would be pretty formidable.

RE: Jackson - Bo's best PG work??

Bronson is already a better point guard than Marshall right now. Marshall is lacking in vision, ball handling, and basketball IQ. He's basically a wing player trapped in a point guard's body. He's Vander Blue minus 5 inches. He'll probably end up being a plus defender at the 1, but he's got a TON of improving to do before he'll be an effective primary ball handler. When Jackson fouled out last night, Bo went with a Brust-Dekker-Bruiser-Evans-Berggren lineup despite it being a situation that called for getting as many guards on the court as possible. That said a lot, to me.

Marshall has an odd skill set. Right now, he's a small off guard. There's a place for them in college basketball (unlike the NBA), but for the next two years we already have Brust playing that role. It will be interesting to see how he fits into the rotation going forward.
