Izzo Alley-Oop

Posted: 1/13/2013 7:08 PM

Izzo Alley-Oop

If you missed the final seconds of the Nebraska/Michigan State game, the Spartans had the ball up by 8 with the final seconds ticking away. Nebraska had basically stopped playing defense, and the coaches were already walking out to shake hands... and then Keith Appling drove to the basket and threw an alley-oop to Branden Dawson with 1.5 seconds left, who thumped his chest and screamed at the crowd.

Tim Miles was not particularly pleased during the handshake, and gave it to Izzo. Don't blame him, particularly after Izzo has famously complained in the past about other teams scoring on him on a final possession.

Only did it because they had to make sure Dawson's knee was OK.

This is so great!  I relish every second of Izzo's revealed hypocrisy.  I want Sam throw an alley oop to Berggren late in a win against MSU just for fun.

Re: Izzo Alley-Oop

Huh? Izzo was asked this in the post game and they were talking about the Dawson injury. Tim Miles said his defender didn't mean anything by it and Izzo was saying there wasn't contact. Shouldn't have been a foul.

Nebraska double teamed Appling into the corner, which was why he was close to the hoop to pass it to Dawson standing under the hoop.

How do you quit playing defense while double teaming a guy? What do you consider defense at that point?

This place is always entertaining. Doesn't disappoint.

Spin it any way you want.  Your coach would have went nuts if the Badgers did the exact same thing

Yes you are right.  With 2 seconds left up 8 they had no choice but to throw an alley-oop.

Re: Izzo Alley-Oop

The flaw in the Izzo logic about Wisconsin was that they did pressure Wisconsin on the previous Wisconsin possession -- not all out but enough that Hill fouled Harris.  Since Harris was just fouled just 5 second earlier, how was he to know that Izzo called his team off.

http://btn.com/video/

Now to sure if the link will show it, but the dunk is out on BTN right now.
I have no idea how anyone in their right mind can say that Appling
was double teamed in the corner.  He is driving to the basket with one
guy on him, and the only time a second NE player got close to him was as he
was the aggressor driving to the basket.
There were two MSU player under the basket, either one looked like they
could have dunked it.
Someone with YouTube knowledge, please grab this and post it for
long term use.
Thanks....

EDIT to add:  The video is now down the list.
You have to look for the one that says: Dawson Dunks in final seconds

Re: Izzo Alley-Oop

Wow.  I gotta think the Nebraska coach asked Izzo if he was mad at his players -- or maybe told him it was okay to forget this one.  No Nebraska players were playing anyone in the lane.

Hey -- no big deal but does prove again that Izzo is the king of the hypocrites.

Seriously, watch the video that was just posted and show me the double team.  Maybe it happened at half court but he easily dribbled out of it and could have simply just dribbled the clock out.  Instead he drove to the lane and threw an alley-oop.  Your spin on this is ridiculous.  At least part of Nebraska's team had quit playing defense. Look at the guy just standing by half court.

The bolded statement is a beautiful contradiction.  The sort of thing someone who knows the truth but tries to spin it does.  He was double teamed into the corner, but was still close to the hoop?  Uh, wha?

There's <5 seconds left anyways, why pass it?  He can't even get a 5 second count against him.

Wisconsin fans - who cares?! You're talking about a play that happened when Devin Harris was here and Tucker was what, a freshman? Time to get over it, don'tcha think?

MSU fans - rationalize it however you want, it was essentially the same exact play you had your panties in a bunch about many years ago. Time to get over it, Don'tcha think?

Can you admit this slam was just as egregious as the Alando Tucker dunk that drew the ire of Tom Izzo until he had a tantrum about something else years down the road?

So you're contending that after a last-second, unnecessary alley-oop the opposing coach didn't make a big deal out of it?  What a novel concept.

Umm yes guys were no longer paying defense.  The video clip is linked here.  One guy was just standing at half court. Appling could have easily just dribbled out the clock.  Even Izzo realized the play wasnt the best idea

"He was pretty cool about it," Izzo said of Miles. "The lob dunk, I hate that. And yet, he was right, they were chasing us all around. And he was good enough to not even care about it.

The funny thing is people on this board probably dont even think what happened was bad but Izzo made such a big deal out of this before and his team did the exact same thing. Hypocrisy is fun to call out.  Miles must be a bigger man that Izzo

Izzo ridiculously made a big deal over nothing years ago. Now he opens himself up to claims of hypocrisy everytime his team is involved in a similar situation.

Put down the pipe. I saw the dunk on BTN.com. Appling wasn't even close to the corner and he sure as hell wasn't doubled. Apploing drove to the hoop and threw it up when he didn't have to.

But congrats on proving once and for all that Izzo and the MSU fans are a bunch of hypocrites.

I think Miles was being polite to say they were chasing them all around.  One guy was playing something that passed as defense and Appling had dribbled by him.  There was no need for the alley oop because he could have just dribbled the clock out.  This is what Izzo cried about years ago and as red said every time his team does something like this he opens himself up to the hypocrisy talk.

Izzo is the one who isn't over it. We as badger fans are simply pointing out his blatant hypocrisy.

Which his team has multiple times since. I don't think anybody should worry themselves over embarrassing by punctuating a victory over the Spartans for the next 20 years or so.

Seriously, I watched the last play.  They were not playing tight defense at all. I dont care if they were playing tight defense the possession before that!  That isnt the point.  MSU played tough defense on the play before Tucker's infamous dunk.  Izzo came off like a whiner back then and it is fun to talk about on off days.  Miles handled it like Izzo should have.  You can try to spin stuff but you are in the wrong place for that.  Go back to the Spartan's board where you can praise all things Tom Izzo. We dont have to do that here, so we wont.

*sigh*

Nebraska called a timeout at 0:15 down 8 and pressed out of the TO.  Yes, they were playing defense and no, it wasn't half-hearted lackadaisical defense.  Look, I'm not a fan of the finishing dunk either, but Nebraska wasn't going to let them stand over the timeline and dribble it out.

Re: Izzo Alley-Oop

Yea, you don't get the whole story from that little clip. Appling dribbled down to the baseline out of the timeout, came back out and the guy continued to play pressure defense on him, so he went to the baseline again and threw it up. I would have rather he didn't do it, too, but it wasn't showboating or anything. Izzo tried apologizing to Miles, but he evidently cut him off and told him his guys were playing to the end so he had no problem with MSU's doing the same.

It's really a non-issue that only Wisconsin and Purdue fans are talking about.
