Great to see a top recruit from the State of Illinois head to UW! GA must be committed to using tight ends as well as wide receivers when he spreads out the offense.

Awesome get! That's one hell of a tight end class.

You've got that right.  He and Penniston form a good looking duo of TE recruits.

Don't underestimate the idiot trolls that frequent this board.  Some Einstein will argue that this commitment will negatively affect our standing with Penniston, causing him to decommit and look elsewhere.  Such fools do not understand the competitive drive that most athletes have at this level.  Great get for the Badgers!

AJ, when you read this, how long do you think it will take for him to adjust to being a TE at the next level? I'm thinking at least two years in the program to get comfortable.

Offer list isn't all that impressive, no, with holding offers from: WI, Iowa, IL, IN, Iowa State, Syracuse and Vandy, but with three local schools offering at least he holds offers from decent local schools unlike some others.

I studied his film and don't mind this commitment.

He signed already?

Nice verbal would be a more accurate statement.

I'd say it's 50/50 that he ends up at OT.

Great upside, whatever position he plays.

Some schools told him OT.

Some schools....just not UW...who he committed to. He's coming in as a TE.

Re: David Edwards commits!!

“'I think Kyle [Penniston]’s a little more athletic, a little faster. Great hands, great with  his feet, quick. With me, I think putting a little size on myself and weight, being able to block, trying to get out and run in the play-action game, I think  us two at tight end will help out our offense, potentially.'...

"Edwards has a 3.68 grade-point average that he acknowledged is the source of  great pride. His goal is to major in business and minor in education and, he  hopes, coach someday."

Three things pop out at me from that: One, the kid is secure enough to compliment another recruit at the same position and indicate what he himself has to do to contribute. Two, he clearly has his head on straight about the student side of student-athlete. And three, his comments on Penniston indicate that he just might see his hopes to become a coach realized. I already like this kid a lot.
These ARE the Good Old Days.

We don't need him to start probably for 3 years.

Re: David Edwards commits!!

TE is not a position of great need in this cycle.  Where ever he ends up playing, and there appear to be several options, this is a great pick-up if only because of where he went to high school and because of who else is on his offer list, specifically Illinois and Iowa who have traditionally had better recruiting success in the Chicago suburbs than Wisconsin (remember Fedorowitz?)  Would not be surprised to see him at OT which could potentially get him on the field sooner than TE.

I disagree...we didn't sign a single TE in the last class. We definitely needed one or two this class.

Another point...I'm surprised at all of the talk about a 235lbs QB beefing up to play OT...are there any examples of that in the past?

Reverse-example:  Steve Luke played center for Woody Hayes at OSU and played defensive back for the Packers in the NFL.

If you're surprised you must not follow all that much.
There a numerous examples of 6'6" 235 Juniors (key word, Juniors) that become starting OT in college.
Iowa has had a number of them.

Don't let the fact that he is currently "playing" QB cloud your judgement.  He will never be a QB at the next level.
A year from now he'll be closer to 250 than 235, imo.

Kirk Ferentz at IA offered as an O-lineman. He may evaluate high school juniors better than even internet message board posters. Wherever he plays, he looks like a great prospect.
